Renewal marks the 33rd edition

The biggest names in international yachting are redoubling their energy and ingenuity to adapt their offering

of goods and services to the new world order. If the world of pleasure boating and luxury yachting has been strongly effected by the deteriorating economic conditions throughout the 2008/2009 season, the time now seems right for a slight rebound, backed by the interest of a yachting fraternity that has never wavered. No doubt starting September 8th, the new models and world premières will certainly be at the Port of Cannes for all to see.

IN PuRSuIT oF PERFoRmaNCE aNd INNoVaTIoN: ThE KEY woRdS oF ThE SECToRAlready in 2009, in the midst of the crisis, French and international shipyards showed a capacity for innovation and exceptional resource to cope with the downturn in the market. In 2010, this concern is still relevant more than ever, and has paid dividends at many levels: new hulls, choice designs, and ever more irreproachable quality of service, etc. And because there cannot be boating activities without a protected environment, the incorporation of environmental considerations is now one of the catalysts of the market: new engine types, hybrid engines, solar panels, LED lighting… As for the craft labelled “Bateau bleu” that comply with marine regulations, there will

be many boats presenting equipment that allows better protection of the environment.

resolutely international event. While exhibitors from European countries still are the ones most represented, through the presence of French, Italian, British, Spanish and German shipyards, Eric de Saintdo, the show’s manager, is very pleased about the growing number of exhibitors from the United States, Russia, the Arab Emirates, Asia and even the emergence of Turkey whose boats offers a very high calibre of construction and finishing. According to Eric de Saintdo, “the Cannes Boat and Yacht Show constitutes an exceptional venue for the major players in international yachting to do business: a great many of them have indeed acknowledged filling their order books!”An essential feature that leads to the show being 80% full already, four months before it opens, and that is in a still uncertain international context. Trends in the French Nautical Industry

The world’s leading manufacturer of sailing boats, inflatable craft and fourth highest producer of motorboats, the

French marine industries have been carrying out a proactive strategy, since the end of 2008, aiming at allow them to adapt to the new economic order, while retaining their dominant positions.

ThE FRENCh maRINE INduSTRY IN 2009During the period, all of the players in French boat and watersports industry displayed strong commercial drive with a view to conquering new opportunities. This resulted in the presentation of a record number of new products in 2009, across all the segments of the market (boats, equipment, engines, etc.), a movement that is continuing in 2010.

Another indication of this dynamism is the maintenance of a strong and sustained business participation in the major exhibitions in France and worldwide. The French marine industry has been particularly committed to maintaining its international position by strengthening its presence through a partnership with UBIFRANCE.

ENVIRoNmENTal CoNCERNS aT ThE hEaRT maRINE INduSTRY dEVEloPmENTThere can be no pleasure in boating without an unspoiled natural environment. Today, close to 80% of marine pollution is due to human and land-based activities. Boating and watersports generate less than 1% of all marine pollution. however, despite this low impact, the French marine industry has for several years now been integrating environmental concerns into its mode of development, so as to reduce the impact to its very minimum. To do this, it has set itself a threefold task dealing with the industrial tool and the production cycle, the use of the boat and its specificities, and the end of a boat’s useful life.

Beforehand, improving the production cycle If building pleasure boats offers a wide choice of

materials and methods aimed at producing a resistant, autonomous boat that lasts, work is currently underway to limit the environmental impact of the composite materials that are used in the majority of cases. Consequently, in the manufacturing process, to reduce the emissions in the atmosphere, a migration toward new production technologies without emissions, in a closed mould or by infusion, is currently in progress. Meanwhile, we are beginning to see the appearance of more

environmentally-friendly raw materials, whether it be in composites, paints or coatings. Lastly, a thorough study into the recycling of polyesters has also begun…

ThE FRENCh MARINE INDUSTRY IN 2009: KEY FIGURES

• More than 5,000 companies• More than 40,500 employees• 30 categories of companies

(marinas, manufacturers, engine builders, parts manufacturers, charter-hire firms, trading and maintenance, surf and outdoor sports, services…)

• A total turnover on the order of 4 billion euros

during the phase of a boat’s use, designing boats with a lower environmental impact Significant progress has been made these past several years in engine design, as gas emissions have fallen by 30% over the last ten years and, with regard to noise, all of the pleasure boats produced in Europe are well below the limits set by EU regulations. That being said, those in the propulsion industry are continuing to work on new generations of engines with even lower gas emissions. At the same time, the installation of holding tanks or sewage treatment systems on boats is essential. Those in the boat industry are thus encouraged to become involved in the “Blue Boat” labelling Programme. As the originators of the programme, the French Nautical Industries Federation also endeavours to raise the awareness of the yachting fraternity, particularly by encouraging them to behave in an appropriate and ecologically-responsible manner, most notably when it comes to using exclusively eco-friendly detergents and hygiene products, sorting their rubbish, and not speeding, etc.

at the end of a boat’s lifeThe question of the fate of vessels that can no longer be used has been studied since 2002. The work carried out culminated in 2009 with the creation of the Association for eco-friendly pleasure boating (APER). It organises and runs the French network for dismantling and recycling unserviceable pleasure craft (BPhU – Bateaux de Plaisance hors Usage) and by extension, other waste disposal networks

linked to all the water sports activities. Its role is also to study the actual stock of unserviceable boats and provide adequate environmentally-friendly solutions for the owners. In 18 months, more than 120 boats have already been dismantled and recycled.
