Dear Candidate, Thank you for registering with Search Associates and for selecting me as the Associate you wish to work with. As you may know, many of the major job fairs are in February. However, we place an increasing number of teachers via our website during the late spring and summer, without a personal interview. And, the Bethesda Recruiting Fair in June is a very candidate friendly fair: small, but with a candidate friendly recruiter to candidate ratio. Essentially, the pool of candidates for jobs in international schools is fairly static, while the size and number of such schools has been growing tremendously, especially in Asia (mainly China) and the Middle East (especially the UAE). The result is that, over the last few years, the less competitive schools are finding it more and more difficult to attract teachers and many (including some highly competitive schools) still have vacancies late in the game. Interestingly, the world-wide financial crisis has, with a few exceptions, only had a limited effect on most of the schools we work with and our placement rate remains very positive, with over 2,800 candidates placed for the 2013-14 academic year. TO COMPLETE REGISTRATION, along with the confidential evaluations on Search forms, we also need the signed Agreement form to be completed, and for you to fill out the Confidential section as well. These can both be completed on the website. A copy of your resume can also be uploaded on the “Personal” tab of your file on the website. Although a passport sized photograph posted to application is optional, it is strongly recommended. Dear Candidate,

Thank you for registering with Search Associates and for selecting me as the Associate you wish to work with.

A check for US$225 (made out to Search Associates), payable through a US bank and mailed to the address at the bottom of this message) is also required, but please do not send it until all other sections of your file have been completed. At that time your entire file will be reviewed, and if you are accepted as a candidate, then we will ask that you forward the registration fee. Just to confirm, there are no placement fees. You can request to attend any of the Search recruiting fairs, but attendance is by invitation only, and some recruiting fairs lend themselves to specific kinds of candidates. Attendance at your first selected recruiting fair is without cost. Should you wish to attend subsequent fairs, a fee of $75 will be charged for each additional fair you attend. The $225 registration fee includes attendance at one recruiting fair. We will not ask you to send your registration check until we have enough information and online reference forms to ascertain that you are a viable candidate. We cannot activate your password, enabling you to search our confidential database, until you have completed all required sections of your file, we have accepted you as a candidate, and we have receive your registration fee.

Credit cards or wire transfers are not accepted; we can accept your (or a friend's) personal check, a bank draft, travelers checks, or International Postal money order---- if they are in $US and list a US bank on the face of the check.

* The following number of references are required:Teaching Candidates: At least three “Supervisor” and one “Parent” of a student

The 4th referee can also be another Supervisor.Intern Candidates: At least four “Intern” evaluationsAdministrative Candidates: At least four “Administrative” references

Page 2: Candidate New Candidate Info 13

These “referees” may be the same individuals listed on your application under references. Or you may select different people to submit confidential evaluations if you wish.

STEPS to Request a Referee to complete an ONLINE CONFIDENTIAL EVALUATION:

A. Please contact each referee to ask if he/she is willing to fill out an online confidential evaluation for you.

B. If willing, get his/her current email address C. Inform the referees that as soon as you enter their name as a referee to your online

profile, they will receive an email immediately from Search Associates with the directions to complete a short 10-minute confidential reference form. Once you have the referee’s permission and his/her email address, please do the following:

1. Log onto your candidate Dashboard on the Search Associates website2. On your Dashboard, under “Your Profile” in the Confidential References section,

click on the “Click here to manage your references/requests.” 3. Please read the instructions and then click on the “Request a Reference” tab to add a

reference. 4. Complete the form (all fields are required) and then click on the Submit button. Your

referee will automatically receive directions to complete a confidential online evaluation for you.To add another referee, click on the “Request a Reference” tab again and repeat the process. You may add referees over time and do not have to do this in one sitting.

5. That’s all! Your part is complete. We recommend that you ask your referees if they received the email request (and thank them once they’ve completed the evaluation)

D. View Status of Evaluations:** You will be able to view the status of the request if you click on the “Reference List” tab.

Completed: The reference request has been successfully submitted by your referee.

Requested: The referee has not yet submitted the evaluation form. If necessary, you may edit the referee information on the original record which will resend an email from the Search Associates system OR you can delete the record entirely. You may also resend the request to the referee if the referee needs a reminder or has “misplaced” the e-mail link and directions.

Rejected: The referee has denied the request. Please fill out a new "request form" with the correct information.

E. You can review the list of References and the status of each request at the bottom of the “References List” tab.

Page 3: Candidate New Candidate Info 13

**IMPORTANT: If your referee does NOT receive an email from us within 24 hours after submitting the referee form, which contains a link taking them to the evaluation, please do the following:

First have them check their spam folder Click on the name of the referee at the bottom of the “References List” tab

to see if you entered the right name and email address for your referee If you entered the wrong data you can correct it and then submit the

corrected request If the data you entered was correct, we recommend that you get an

alternate email from them in case the first address wasn’t accepting the original email and resend another email using the same step as above.

If your referee misplaces or loses the email that contains the link to the evaluation form, you can resend the request.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns about the process, please let me know, and I’ll do my best to help. Remember, the sooner we have your completed file in hand, the sooner we can make a decision on your candidacy.

Depending on the type and size of your school, “supervisors” may be the Superintendent (Director), Assistant Superintendent, Director of Curriculum & Instruction, certainly the Principal (and Vice Principal, if there is one), Department Chair or Team Leader, Instructional coach. In smaller schools, colleagues such as a guidance counselor or librarian may be used, although such peer evaluations tend to be discounted by recruiters.

If you have not already done so, please open a Skype account < www.skype.com.newtoskype > and insert your Skype name where indicated on your online application. This will facilitate communication with us, and, more importantly, provide a default mode of communication for schools wishing to carry out video conference interviews.

ADDING PHOTOS TO YOUR ONLINE APPLICATION

You are able to access your online application form and upload your photo so it appears on your web application. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and are posted on the website. It should be a head and shoulders photo, such as a passport picture, nothing more.

INSERTING YOUR PICTURE ON YOUR ONLINE APPLICATION IS VOLUNTARY, NOT REQUIRED (Recruiters consistently tell us how important these photos are in helping them recall candidates after interviewing so many during the recruiting "season.")

WHEN YOUR PASSWORD IS ACTIVATED:

A) You can search our database for vacancies, salaries, benefits, and other important information.

Page 4: Candidate New Candidate Info 13

B) Your registration form--with all your details and DIRECT LINKS to your online evaluation forms-- will be activated on our web database. This means that all recruiters searching for teachers will have access to your registration form, your photograph AND, MOST IMPORTANT, to links leading to your approved online CONFIDENTIAL REFERENCE FORMS. C) You will get an email each day listing openings posted during the past 24 hours

Just so you know, copies of your online registration form will be available to all recruiters present at any fair you attend, allowing them to do prescreening.

For any fair, you should bring multiple copies of your resume, any open narrative letters of recommendation you might have, and any other materials you think will support your candidacy.

After you have been accepted and we activate your password, we suggest that you do some research on our website, using your password and user ID.

One general note about all of our fairs: each has a deadline for registration/acceptance, generally about three weeks or so before it begins, but three fairs ALWAYS fill up months in advance: Bangkok/January, Cambridge and London/January. For these three, I have usually run out of invitations two to three months in advance.

Communication with Search Associates

A---Our electronic circuits are constantly being overloaded by hundreds of email messages from candidates who---in an heroic attempt to make sure they are doing everything correctly---are asking all sorts of questions for which answers may be readily apparent or may be found easily on the web site. We always want to help and support candidates as much as we possibly can, and any email requiring a quick and simple response from us is perfectly acceptable and welcome.

However, we do ask you to be thoughtful and reflective before you hit that "send button." (if you have a real need or a complicated matter to discuss, it is best handled by telephone at 1-609-759-0431. The best times to call are from 8 AM through 6 PM New Jersey (ET) time and I will be happy to hear from you.

(Note that you are expected to keep track of your own references because you will get a web generated email every time one is submitted to us online. If you do not get an email announcement, it means that your reference form was never sent or your email address on your registration form is incorrect.)

B---To keep up with the latest news on a fair, regularly check " FAIRS AND WORKSHOPS" or LATEST NEWS" on our website---scroll down and click on the appropriate fair inside the box listing all fairs. BE AWARE THAT THERE IS AN IMPORTANT AND REQUIRED ORIENTATION MEETING AS PART OF EACH OF OUR FAIR SCHEDULES, AND THIS WILL INCLUDE AN EXTENSIVE QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSION.

Page 5: Candidate New Candidate Info 13

Updating Your Application/Searching the Database:

A---Please note that, if you make changes on your application form, check to make sure it was successfully entered. To update your online registration form, all you have to do is to enter your username and password in the appropriate place on the "candidate" page and follow the directions. (Please note that you can do this before or after your password is activated)

B---Once your password is activated, you can also search the web to view school salaries, benefits and vacancies. NOTE THAT -- IN SPITE OF OUR URGINGS -- MANY SCHOOLS DO NOT UPDATE THEIR VACANCIES UNTIL JANUARY OR FEBRUARY, OR JUST BEFORE A FAIR WHICH THEY PLAN TO ATTEND. PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION TO THE DATE OF THE SCHOOL'S LAST UPDATE, WHICH IS DISPLAYED AUTOMATICALLY ON OUR WEBSITE.

C--Note that there is an extremely important feature on our website. All candidates are encouraged to use their username and password to log on --- at least every week in high recruiting season -- to indicate their availability by clicking on the "availability" button on the login page.

D--Urgent---if you have not updated the availability feature on your Application for more than 45 days, your application form will be deleted-- repeat, will be deleted-- from our site.

SPECIAL NOTE: The increasing use of the internet has seen the creation of websites purporting to be dedicated to “telling the truth” about schools and administrators. Because the postings on such websites are done anonymously, the accuracy of statements is highly questionable at best and libelous at worst. Disclaimers by the operators of such sites not withstanding, we believe that disgruntled teachers are the ones most likely to write something negative about a school or administrator. Highly satisfied teachers are less motivated, both to write OR to even be aware of such websites, let alone pay money to support them.

At the recent fairs, several candidates reported to us that they had been contacted by the operators of such websites in an attempt to get them to sign-up. If you receive such an email, please let me know. I promise to give you an accurate, balanced analysis of any school or situation and will never try to “sell” you a school that you do not want. I want candidates coming back to me years down the road when they are looking for a new job, not a quick placement, and that means telling the truth.

ALSO, you are probably familiar with the term “Googling.” Have you Googled yourself lately? Anyone looking to hire might, and if such a search is likely to reveal any embarrassing information about you, it is best to let us know in advance so that we can advise you before getting to far in the process.

What follows is a LONG email with a lot of information, covering:

YOUR WORD IS YOUR BOND: NEVER BREAK IT!A quick word about the on-line agreement that followed the registration form. If you attend a recruitment fair, you are not obligated to take a contract offer unless you want to. This is always your decision. But ONCE YOU SAY 'YES' TO A SCHOOL RECRUITER, either verbally or in writing, YOU ARE OBLIGATED. If you later back out of any agreement, there is a financial penalty involved, so never, ever, say 'yes' unless and until you mean it.

A hint: some recruiters, despite new guidelines being put into place (see number 3 below), are likely to insist on candidates accepting a contract as soon as possible. If you are uncomfortable with a given offer and it does not ‘feel’ right, then stall, ask for more time, whatever, EVEN IF IT MEANS POTENTIALLY LOSING THE JOB!

GUIDELINES FOR CANDIDATES AND RECRUITERS

INTRODUCTIONThe Council of International Schools, International Schools Services, Queen's University, Search Associates and the University of Northern Iowa take stewardship of the recruiting process seriously and, in response to the growing challenges, have agreed to implement the following guidelines at recruitment conferences. The organizations will continue to consult regularly as the recruitment process evolves. GUIDELINES 1. School representatives must adhere to the hiring laws of the country in which interviews are being conducted. All candidates will be given equal consideration without reference to age, gender, race, religion or disability. Relevant host country living conditions and visa restrictions should be presented during the interview process for review by potential candidates.

2. Recruiters and registered candidates may meet in advance of a recruitment conference. Once at a conference, independent meetings may also take place in advance of the formal interview sign-up period. Schools may offer positions, and registered candidates may accept, at any time.

3. Candidates should, to the extent possible, research schools and positions before interviews, so that decisions may be informed ones, leading to comfort and compliance with all agreements. When offering positions, recruiters should allow candidates who wish it, reasonable and mutually agreed upon time within specific conferences to make a decision. 4. An offer for the same position will not be made simultaneously to multiple candidates.

Page 7: Candidate New Candidate Info 13

5. Recruiters are expected to notify candidates who have scheduled interviews if a position is filled before their assigned interview time. However, recruiters may wish to interview these candidates for future consideration.

6. Candidates have an equal responsibility to notify recruiters if they have accepted a position and will not be honoring an interview appointment.

7. A verbal offer and acceptance are considered binding on both parties. It is strongly recommended that recruiters and candidates sign a letter of intent or a contract providing the basic terms of the agreement at the time the offer are accepted.

8. Both schools and candidates are expected to honor offers made and accepted, whether written or verbal.

CONCLUSIONThe five recruitment organizations, by adopting these guidelines, actively support an atmosphere at recruitment conferences that will be conducive to thoughtful decision-making. Individual recruitment organizations reserve the right to withdraw future services and support from schools or candidates in the event of infringement of these guidelines.

THE SCHOOLSThe schools we deal with are independent American, international and, to a lesser extent, British schools. Most are non-profit and governed by school boards comprised of parents of children attending that school. Many (about 200) are affiliated with the US State Department through the US Embassy or Consulate at post, though the Embassy seldom has direct control of the school. (Search Associates has informal, not direct links, with the US Government.) Some other schools we work with are proprietary, especially many of the new schools in Asia and the Middle East that have developed over the last ten to fifteen years as expatriate populations rapidly outgrew the ability of existing schools to serve educational needs. In total, Search has contacts with over 500 schools around the world, over half of which recruit at one of our fairs in a given year. A rapidly growing number of teachers are hired by schools that never attend a fair, or in the spring/summer after the fairs have ended.

There is no central controlling body for international schools: each is separate and independent. However, most of the schools we work with are accredited though one of the major American accrediting agencies, which provides a common set of standards. In addition, the schools have organized themselves into regional professional associations that provide excellent in-service and other professional opportunities.

English is the language of instruction and American textbooks and materials are in common use. Most calendars follow the North American school year, although some schools in the Southern Hemisphere reverse it. Academic achievement at international schools is high and parental support is strong. Student achievement covers a normal range, but is skewed to the right of the curve so that international averages are higher than in many US schools. Students in international schools come from high socio-economic families where at least one parent

Page 8: Candidate New Candidate Info 13

normally has a university degree. Educational aspirations of parents for their children is high and many students go on to highly selective universities. Thus, most international high schools offer AP or IB programs.

Most international schools enroll a wide mix of nationalities. In many schools, US students make up about 30% of the total, but the range is from perhaps 5% to more than 90%. Some schools, particularly in Latin America, enroll large numbers of host-country students, while schools in some other parts of the world are prohibited from enrolling host-country nationals. US teachers are often in the majority, but not always.

While most international schools are day schools in urban areas, all teachers and interns who consider taking jobs in boarding schools, and especially the more rurally-located of those schools, need to be sure that they will enjoy the busy but small-world and mildly - or sometimes severely - isolated life of a residential school campus. There are a wide variety of schools available, so know yourself and choose one that is right for you.

Search Associates does not place teachers in Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDS). DoDDS is a world-wide system of about 200 schools for the dependent children of US military personnel.

For the 2011-2012 school year, Search Associates collectively placed over 2,500 teachers and administrators.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - What are Heads of International Schools Looking For in Faculty?

Recruiters are looking for teachers who match their school philosophy and are willing to work long and hard to accomplish the school mission. International schools are independent schools, which are different than the public schools from where many candidates originate.

Some of the Differences Between Public and Independent Schools

US Public Overseas Private

Responsible to public at large Responsible only to parents, company or owner

Must serve diverse community needs May be more selective and elect to serve a narrower clientele

Tax supported Dependent on school fees

State mandated curriculum May create its own curriculum

State & Federal laws; limited ability to adopt local policies

Greater latitude to set own policies, depending on the country

Collective bargaining governs employee relations Most overseas schools operate on individual

Page 9: Candidate New Candidate Info 13

contracts subject to board policy

Must deal extensively with media Public relations/communication more of an internal matter

Board meetings must be public Board meetings may be private

Members are voted on by the public Members may be either elected or appointed

I hope this helps explain some of the differences for you.

TRAITS OF SUCCESSFUL TEACHERSTeaching overseas is a wonderful, rewarding professional experience. What do recruiters look for when hiring teachers? The questionnaire you already reviewed stressed several factors, but beyond those, a study published in the journal of the Association for the Advancement of International Education (Summer, 1990) of 37 schools in the Near East, South Asia (NESA) region showed that school directors highly valued the following qualities picked from an adjective check list:

Reliable Energetic StableResponsible Understanding CaringIntelligent Organized AbleSensible Fair Professional

Perhaps more revealing is the list of adjectives written in by school directors, as they did not appear on the original list: Flexible, Adaptable, Creative, Dedicated, Committed, Honest, Patient, and Adventurous

School directors do NOT want teachers who are rigid, passive, ‘free,’ carefree, or perfectionists. If you are honest in apprising yourself as a teacher, this should give you some more insight as to your probabilities for success. Come to think of it, these are not bad descriptors for teachers anyplace in the world!

SALARIES & BENEFITSSalaries & benefits at the schools we work with are generally quite attractive. How much you might earn at a given school is a function of several factors, such as tax status, cost of living and benefits provided by the school, so salary cannot be viewed in isolation. One might earn over $60,000 in Europe and save nothing or only $27,000 in Latin America and save $6,000. As a rough guide, the world-wide average savings (over in-country expenses) at the schools we work with is about US$9,500 for a single teacher with no dependents. Most schools, in addition to salary, provide airfare, housing, medical insurance and some sort of retirement benefit. Foreign earned income is not subject to US income tax for the first $92,900 for the 2011 tax year. For practical purposes, most American teachers are tax free in the US and may or may not be in the foreign country, depending on local laws.

Page 10: Candidate New Candidate Info 13

Almost all initial contracts are for two years, though most schools certainly hope and expect that teachers will stay longer. I may have been typical when I left the US in 1973 (for Japan) "for a few years” and that turned into an entire career abroad. I have since known teachers who liked teaching in international schools so much that the thought of returning home was more traumatic than the initial move abroad!

The teaching conditions, support and professional development opportunities in many international schools are excellent.

WHICH SCHOOL IS RIGHT FOR YOU? KEEP YOUR OPTIONS OPEN! While I can understand this interest, I cannot tell you how many candidates have come to a recruitment fair with such preconceptions only to wind up happily going to some totally unexpected location.

An important function of recruiting fairs is that they bring candidates into contact with school recruiters who come from locations many candidates had never thought about before. No one is ever forced to go anywhere they do not want, but we do ask that you consider many options because candidates with a narrow focus often have a difficult time finding a position.

How much you will save and where you will live are certainly important. But I feel the most important factor is how happy you will be with the job itself, at the school and in the classroom, because that is where you will spend the majority of your time.

Safety and Security:In general, living and teaching abroad is pretty safe and car accidents are to be feared more than street crime or terrorist action. But, each person has a different threshold of comfort when it comes to threat levels and each person must choose for him/herself what is right for them. Do not automatically drop schools in “threat areas” without investigating further by speaking directly with the recruiter from that school at a fair or by email. They will honestly answer your questions and concerns and then you can decide if you want to apply or not.

Words of WisdomAs recruiting fairs approach, these are some "words of wisdom" for you to review about a number of different topics.

1-- Back in the "old days," before the curse and blessing called the Internet and email, candidates went to Recruitment Fairs mostly in the blind, trusting that good things would happen--and they usually did.

Today many candidates spend time doing research on the web and will send emails pursuing several positions in an attempt to have multiple interviews lined up before the recruiting fair begins.

A—Many recruiters are inundated by email from candidates seeking positions.

Page 11: Candidate New Candidate Info 13

B--Often recruiters will not know of openings until shortly before the fairs and, even if they do, many do not list them publicly until a few weeks before the fair.

C--Available positions come and go, and are volatile right up to the fair itself. This works both ways; posted positions which seem very alluring will disappear, and other openings, often even better, can pop-up at the last minute.

D--Flexibility is now and will always be extremely important. If you will only go to Europe or Asia, you seriously limit yourself. There are many great schools, including several in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Far East.

The moral of the story--be careful about choosing a fair based on the openings you "think" might be available.

2—As your search cranks up, go to your application on our website and review it for accuracy. MOST IMPORTANT, please review question # 15 about which fairs you plan to attend, including non - Search Associates fairs. It is extremely important that you have the correct Fair boxes checked, or unchecked, as appropriate. (Also, make sure you have listed your correct email address and phone number.)

3--I should add the following points:

A--We believe that Search Associates, because of our decentralization and because of our large number of Senior associates, gives more personal attention to candidates than any other agency.

B--A fair is NOT the end of the process; it is only the BEGINNING. Should you not get a position at one of OUR fairs, we will stick with you working hard to help you find a position.

C--There is, in fact, a pronounced trend that more and more new positions come up in late February, March, and even in April, May, and June. The number of late placements we are making continues to grow substantially each year.

4--On a completely different topic, I want to touch on the topic of PHOTOGRAPHS.(If you have already posted your photo online, please ignore this message)

A--While photographs are NOT required, you need to know that they are important to recruiters who try to keep track of and identify scores of candidates. In our opinion, your file will be stronger if it contains your photo--a good quality "headshot" only, or one showing only a small part of your shoulders as well.

B— For those of you planning to attend the Cambridge Fair, the Associate who administers that fair feels so strongly about this that he has written me to say he will not allow any candidate to attend unless they have a "headshot" photo ONLINE or unless we have a statement directly from you that you have no intention of placing your photo on our website.

COMPLETING REGISTRATIONI look forward to receiving your evaluation forms in plenty of time to decide if we can accept you as a candidate and invite you to one of our fairs. Once we have your evaluations, we will advise you if you are accepted and, after receiving your registration fee of $225, we will activate your on-line registration form for school recruiters to view and your username and password should work. It will save time if you pay the registration and fair fees in advance. WE WILL HOLD YOUR CHECK UNTIL WE HAVE DETERMINED IF YOU ARE ACCEPTED. (Should you not be accepted, we will void the check and advise you.)

Sincerely,
