NEW-ICON OF ST. EUGENE DE MAZENOD
Fr. Jack Lau OMI
The genesis of this project came from discussions I had with local iconographer, Suzanne Massie Manchevsky, who lives near the Oblate retreat house, Galilee Centre in Arnprior, Ontario. After we worked together to launch the Spiritual Retreat and Icon Workshop program here at Galilee, our discussions turned to the life and charism of St. Eugene de Mazenod as the

Jack Lau, OMI, with icongrapher Suzanne Massie Manchevsky
150th anniversary of his “dies natalis” (birth into heaven) approached.
Suzanne asked if she could write an Icon of St. Eugene, so we conducted research at the archives of St. Paul’s University in Ottawa and came away with many books, photos and DVD’s about his passionate faith and love of God, our Blessed Mother, his beloved Oblates and compassion for all, especially the lowliest.
Following our initial research and a number of study and prayer sessions, we focused on listening to the Spirit and what St. Eugene was saying to each of us and we each heard the voice of the older, wiser, matured and burnished St. Eugene calling. And so the sketching and drawing process began and Suzanne would send me photos of the Icon throughout the painting that now can be seen as a YouTube video through this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1Kc0WfmCOM.
There will be a week-long Spiritual Retreat and Icon Workshop at Arnprior in 2011, beginning of the birthday of St. Eugene, August 1.
HOW TO READ THE ICON?
Icon of Saint Eugene de Mazenod,
Founder, Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI)
What is an Icon?
“Icon” is the Greek word for “image”. Icons are pictures of Holy Ones or scenes from Scripture. Saint John of Damascus compared
the sacred pictorial “language” of Icons to the theological narrative function of the Gospels, which is why they are described as a visual Gospel or a window or ladder to Heaven. Holy Icons date from earliest Christianity and Saint Luke the Evangelist (patron saint of artists and iconographers) is considered to have been the first iconographer.
About Saint Eugene de Mazenod
St Eugene was born a French nobleman on August 1, 1782 in Aix-en-Provence. Following the French Revolution, his aristocratic family was torn apart by years in exile, debt and divorce and his beloved Holy Catholic Church was in tatters and under continued attack.
He might have chosen to marry well and use his connections to gain wealth or political power, but he experienced a profound conversion of spirit on Good Friday of 1807. While praying before a crucifix, “Jesus called him forcibly to feel the strength of his love.

Eugene wept, he lamented his sins and felt immense joy at discovering the meaning of his life—that he was destined to give himself totally to Jesus Christ”. (“Living in the Spirit’s Fire”, p vii) St Eugene had received the spiritual gift of “Holy Tears”, of boundless love and compassion. He was ordained in 1811 and chose to minister to the poor, abandoned and sick as well as a special ministry to youth and prisoners. Later on he was called serve the Church as Bishop of Marseilles for many years.
St Eugene founded his fledgling group of missionary priests in 1816 and the Rule of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate was approved by Rome in 1826. Some of his first missionaries went to Canada in 1841and Oblates are now present throughout the world. Along with and under the patronage of the Most Holy Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception, he worked tirelessly his entire life as Co-Redeemer and Apostle of Christ and lover and upholder of the Church. St Eugene died on May 21, 1861. In his final words to his beloved Oblates, he urged that they continue always to be and to practice love or “charity, charity, charity”.
St Eugene is the patron saint of families in difficult times.
How to “read” this Icon
This Icon was created to celebrate and commemorate the 150th anniversary of the “Dies Natalis” (birth into heaven) of Saint Eugene de Mazenod, Founder of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. As such, it depicts the “sum” of his earthly life and faith journey.
The Icon depicts a mature St Eugene at 78 years old, sanctified and burnished by God’s
love and more compassionate and mellow from years of pouring himself out in service to Christ, his Church and the world as an oblation. He is glowing, transfigured and glorified by God. He is both Founder and beloved “Papa” of the Oblate community. His hair is white with pearl highlights and he radiates divine light and love. From his right eye, we see a holy tear drop falling, signifying his spiritual conversion to becoming love. His forehead is bright, wide and lined, denoting divine wisdom. His neck is strong and thick, denoting fullness of Spirit. His eyes and ears are exaggerated to

Iconographer/instructor
Suzanne Massie Manchevsky studied art at the Haliburton School of the Arts (Sir Sandford Fleming College) and Iconography with the St. John of Damascus Icon Studio and through her travels and research. She loves writing icons and being able to share this beautiful, prayerful art form with others for the praise of God. She facilitates a scripture study group and is a lay minister of the Word in her Arnprior parish and is one with the Oblate Associates of Arnprior/Galilee Center
signify following and being obedient to God.
As he was the Bishop of Marseille, St Eugene wears a red bishop’s cape with a purple undertone representing his noble blood. He wears the distinctive Gallic collar and the Mission Cross or Oblate Crucifix. His cassock is French Blue to reflect his nationality.
St Eugene offers a two finger blessing to the viewer while pointing us to the narrow path, Christ on the Cross, the Living Word of God made flesh who gave freely of His life for the salvation of others. St Eugene’s mission would be as Christ’s co-redeemer and apostle, spreading the Good News of God’s saving love throughout the world. He holds the Scriptures reverently, using his cape; it is bookmarked to indicate his mandate from the Gospel of St Luke, 4:18: “The Spir it of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free.”
The lettering on the Icon’s background reads: Saint Eugene de Mazenod, OMI on the viewer’s left. On the right are his deathbed instructions to Oblates to BE love, “la charite, la charite, la charite” and the year of his Dies Natalis, 1861. The Icon script is based on and copied from St Eugene’s own handwriting in his letters so that he personally addresses each viewer.
THE CRESCENTOblate House 1311 The Crescent, Vancouver, BC.
The Oblate house on ‘the Crescent’ in Vancouver has been a significant part of Oblate life in the West. ‘The Cresecent’ as it is affectionately known, has served as the provincial offices of St. Paul’s Province and a house of hospitality for travelling Oblates.
The Crescent has always served as a hospitality house. Today, there are six guests rooms. At one time the door was not locked at night and was always open for an unexpected Oblate to drop in and find a room for the night. This was the practice of an ‘open door.’The multi-purpose room in the basement serves as a meeting room and gathering for workshops. Bernie McCosham, OMI, the director proudly boasts that ‘we have great barbeques beside the pool in the summer.”
At the present moment there are seven Oblates living at the Crescent. “This is a good place for a rest and relaxation which everyone needs. There are not too many places where you can get that! There is a quiet atmosphere here at the Crescent” even though the traffic is very heavy on Granville St. [very close by].”

The décor of the house exhibits a strong connection with the Oblate history in BC. The dining room is ringed with a collection of memorial plates of the various parishes and historical personalities that have shaped this history. There is a clear demonstration of the life with the First Nations Peoples of BC with the art and carvings that are hung on the walls. The walls breath an Oblate missionary spirit.
A Brief History
Shaughnessy Heights was a grant of land (250 acres) of the Canadian Pacific Railway on completion of the CPR rail line to the West Coast. A subdivision that followed included The Crescent with Shaughnessy Part in the center. Of the fourteen homes, twelve have been designated heritage buildings. Oblate House was not designated ‘heritage’ because of the addition of a wing that had been added by previous owners. This wing includes the present chapel.
Stately family homes were given proper names such as “The Hollies” and “Ville Russe.” 1311 The Crescent was “Strathardle.” This title is found in the entranceway on mosaic tile.
Oblate House was built in 1912 for Dr. Alex Monro and his wife Edith McCrossan. Dr. Monro began the practice of medicine as
family physician. Patients were admitted at the entrance by a second door that led to the reception area and examining rooms.
Dr. Monro chose the site for the present Vancouver General Hospital and was prominent in the design of the original building. In 1932 he also sparked a campaign for a medical school at UBC.
A word about the house.
Meals prepared in the kitchen were conveyed to the second floor dining room (today Rooms M4 andM5) by a dumb-waiter manually operated by pulleys from the ground floor. Part of the elevator shaft can still be seen in the second floor linen room. On the third floor, the servants occupied rooms.
After Dr. Monro died in 1932, the house was zoned multi-family and divided into seven suits to help provide living space for men and women coming to Vancouver to assist in the war effort. It became a source of revenue for the new owners.
In 1961 Fr. Gerry Kelly, OMI, was named Vicar Provincial and had his office at St. Augustine’s Rectory until 1968 when the purchase of Oblate House at 1311 the Crescent for 65,000 was approved.

On January 6, 1968, Fr. Gerry Kelly, OMI, and Brother Jerome Blackburn,OMI, took possession of the house which they purchased from the Otto Zimmerman family. Because many repairs were needed, Brother Blackburn set to work to renovate the basement. A new floor, kitchenette and false ceiling were added. All were the work of brother’s carpentry skills. Only the new fireplace required a contractor to be called in for installation.
By 1975 it became obvious that accommodation was needed for visiting Oblates, as well as a meeting place and a rehab center for those recovering from illness.
Providentially, the house next door at 1275 Tecumseh became available. It was built by Dan and Ruth Giroday in the early 1960’s for their family of ten, with eight bedrooms, four bathrooms and a swimming pool. Purchase price for this home was 190,000.
A word about the neighborhood.
In the early years of Vancouver, horses were used for transportation and recreation. Fr. Gerry Kelly once found a letter from the city urging that manure not be allowed to gather in the driveways.
Over forty different species of trees were planted in Shaughnessy Park, however, there is no definite record of who planted them or when. Gerald B. Stanley, a professor at UBC, identified all the trees in the park.

Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate
Novena for VocationsMay 21 – 29, 2011
21 --Feast of St Eugene de Mazenod OMITheme of the Day:
Eugene de Mazenod, A Father with a Heart Open to the World
1st Reading: Genesis 12: 1-‐22nd Reading: From the Oblate Rule: The Oblates are a missionary congregation. They are men set apart for the Gospel, ready to leave everything to be disciples of Jesus Christ. Their principle service in the Church is to proclaim Christ and his Kingdom to the most abandoned… The mission of the
Oblates is especially to those people whose condition cries out for salvation and for the hope, which only Jesus Christ can fully bring. These are the poor with their many faces – they have our preference because of their need. (Go to Closing Prayers)
22-‐-‐Theme of the Day:Happy the Con@ident Hearts Because the
Lord is With Them1st Reading2nd Reading: Fr Louis Lougen OMI to the French Province (March 2011): : Matthew 28:20 [At] Our recent Chapter…we were led by the Spirit to focus on conversion to Jesus Christ and Him CruciHied. This is nothing less than the decision to embrace the very Gospel once again as our way of life: “Repent and believe in the Gospel!” We have recognized that our lives stand in need of change, growth and newness. The Chapter was a perfect echo of the words of the Founder in his Preface to the Constitutions and Rules: “They must constantly renew themselves in the grace of their vocation, living in a state of habitual self-denial and seeking at all times to reach the very summit of perfection” (Go to Closing Prayers)
