Can We Speak in Tongues Today?

Miraculous gifts from the Holy Spirit enabled early Christians to do great and mighty works.

Revealed and confirmed God’s truths.New Testament had not been fully revealed.Miracles were signs to the unbelievers. Is the Holy Spirit still giving men miraculous

gifts? Many today profess to speak in tongues like those

in the Bible. But is it really the same?

What was speaking in tongues?Tongues were known as languages (Acts 2:4-

13).Gibberish sounds some today call speaking in

tongues is not found in the Bible.Tongues: A sign to the unbeliever (I Cor. 14:22).Less desirable gift than prophecy (I Cor. 14:5).Controlled by the speaker (I Cor. 14:26-40).All done unto edification. The Holy Spirit did not overpower the person.

Tongues: One of many spiritual gifts.I Cor. 12:8-10: Miraculous gifts. Not everything we call miracles are miracles.Gifts given by the Spirit were supernatural.Gifts revealed/confirmed Word of God (Eph.

3:3-5; Mark 16:20; Hebrews 2:3-4).Unity was to prevail (I Cor. 12:1-14).Miraculous gifts were supposed to cease (I

Cor. 13:8-10).

How are claims to tongues today explained? An emotional or learned experience.

We can ask questions to those who claim to speak in tongues.

The gift of tongues were received in two ways: Holy Spirit baptism and laying on of apostles’ hands.

The present practice of tongue speaking has no Biblical basis.
