Hosting City – Bregenz

Regional Highlights

BregenzBregenz, the capital of Vorarlberg, is located at the quadripoint of Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.Situated at the eastern shore of Lake Constance, Bregenz has Austrias most important harbour and is a considerable sports- and cultural centre. It is also world famous for its “Bregenz Festival”, which takes place in the worlds largest open air theater every year.

The 2000 years old city, which is the most densely populated in Vorarlberg, can be viewed in a 360° panorama, from the 1.064m high “Pfänder” mountain. Lake Constance offers various opportunities for excursions and aquatic sports, which is an added value to Bregenz unique feature of combining nature and culture.

HardThe market town Hard is just off the boarder to Switzerland. Its natural Lake Constance sides demonstrate the well-done combination of preservation of nature and having a promotion of the economy at the same time.

Hard with its 12,500 citizens, is located amidst a beautiful recreation area. Concerts, aswell als other cultural events take place in the “Kulturwerkstatt Kammgarn”, which is as worth seeing as the modern city hall. The “Sportanlage am See”, at which the hall is located, is Hards sporting center, which demonstrates the countless sport-opportunities in Hard and its surrounding area.

DornbirnAs the largest city of Voralberg, Dornbirn is the commercial and economic hub of the state. Based on population facts and figures, Dornbirn is the biggest city of Vorarlberg, a small but vibrant town that has never really lost its rural identity. Dornbirn benefits both culturally and scenically from its location, as it is situated between four countries: Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Germany.Perhaps one of the most interesting places in Vorarlberg from an architectural point of view, is the Marketplace of Dornbirn. Influenced by the architectural styles of three and a half centuries, it is a stage and a meeting point at the same time.

Karrenseilbahn with a view over DornbirnDornbirn is Vorarlberg’s exhibition centre, home to the regional studios of the ORF, and site of many central schools, including the first college of higher education of Vorarlberg, which meanwhile accounts 7 bachelors and 6 master programmes. Furthermore, Dornbirn is the centre of the textile industry of Vorarlberg, which experienced a tremendous development during the first half of the 19th century that strongly influenced the personality and character of the city.

Dornbirn is composed of villages on the outskirts of the Rhine valley: Oberdorf, Hatlerdorf, Haselstauden, Rohrbach, Schoren, Watzenegg, Kehlegg, and in the centre the Niederdorf and the Unterdorf, today simply called “Market”. Situated some 8 kilometres away, Ebnit is another mountain village. These villages are of considerable age, as Dornbirn was already settled during the Celtic time. Dornbirn is a city since 1901, thanks to a decree by the Kaiser.
