INTRODUCTION

Welcome to London and the 12th London Design Festival. Camron has been working with the Festival team for eight years and this one promises to be the biggest and best, with an impressive collection of landmark projects and a wide variety of design events taking place across the capital over the ten-day Festival.

The London Design Festival website is the best source of information: londondesignfestival.com but the printed guide is very good too. This year it will be bigger in size, to accommodate the increase in partners and provide more space for editorial comment, and it will be available to collect at all participating locations. The Victoria and Albert Museum will be the ‘hub’ of the Festival for the sixth year. The Festival’s relationship with the mu-seum continues to grow. This year, visitors will encounter some spectacular installations, interventions and exhi-bitions as well as a Graphics Weekend (13-14 September) and a Digital Weekend (20-21 September).

We are delighted that Edward Barber OBE and Jay Osgerby OBE are working with BMW to present Double Space, a real show-stopper presenting two kinetic mirrored structures in the beautiful Raphael Gallery. Glass artist Jeremy Maxwell Wintrebert has worked with Perrier-Jouët to present an installation of huge glass cyl-inders (made by one of the oldest mouth-blown glass factories in Germany), Zaha Hadid has created Crest, a polished bridge-like structure over the pool in the Madejski Garden which reflects the sky on the surface and the rippling water on the underneath and Felix de Pass, Ian McIntyre and Michael Mongomery have created Candela, a glowing installation in the V&A’s Tapestry Gallery and the Wish List, an idea initiated by Sir Terence Conran brings together established and emerging designers to create pieces out of American Hardwood.

In Trafalgar Square, from 18 – 22 September, Airbnb is supporting the presentation of four structures which represent the idea of home. A Place Called Home offers the vision of a ‘perfect home’ from leading designers: Jasper Morrison, Studioilse, Patternity and Raw-Edges. From a Pigeon fancier’s house to a home that expands and contracts to reveal rooms, this installation will inspire and beguile visitors to London’s leading square.

Elsewhere, the London Design Festival embraces the major trade shows: 100% design at Earl’s Court (for the last year, before it moves to Olympia), designjunction at the Old Sorting Office, Tent London & Superbrands London at the Old Truman Brewery, Focus/14 in Design Centre Chelsea Harbour and Decorex International which has moved to Syon House. This year, there are six design districts and elsewhere there are special exhibitions, events, talks, tours and ‘happenings’ going on within retailers, design studios, galleries, cafes, hotels and restaurants.

This pack contains press releases, our own list of highlights, suggestions for the best places to eat and re-charge batteries (literally) with free WiFi and good coffee. There are plenty of launches, parties and events to attend and the Camron team will be on hand to help you to find your way around the city. We look forward to seeing you next week – and if you can’t come but are keen to know about the Festival, I hope that this pack will make you feel as though you are part of all that is happening!

Best wishes,

Judy DobiasManaging Director

Ace Hotel London Shoreditch will be a central destination during London Design Festival as the Shoreditch Design Triangle’s official hub location. The hotel will host a series of design-focused installations and activities by Modern Design Re-view in the show ‘Super Stimuli’ working with designers Fabien Cappello, Martino Gamper, Michael Marriott and Bethan Laura Wood. Italy-based research workshop and studio Fabrica will also present ‘Extra-Ordinary Gallery’, a study of ordinary things designed by a team of multi-cultural designers, in the hotel’s reception re-tail space. Ace Hotel is well known for its support of local commerce and culture - as well as innovative partnerships with local businesses, artisans and creatives.

AfroditiKrassa studio has been commissioned to design the bar within Super Brands London. Designed as a catwalk, visitors sit around the staging utilising the space as a grand table, whilst models are showcasing the hottest work from new fashion designers. The AK Bar will also host an in-situ launch of the AKollection, the studio’s debut collection of tiles and lighting. The range of bold monochrome tiles and smoked and bevelled mirrors reference the glamour of Art Deco design.

Airbnb is collaborating with the London Design Festival on a ‘Landmark Project’ in Trafalgar Square entitled ‘A Place Called Home’. The project has invited four designers, Jasper Morrison, Patternity, Raw Edges and Studioilse, to explore the concept of home. The unique designs range from a room that expands and con-tracts to the home of a Pigeon fancier. The installation celebrates the creativity of the Airbnb community.

BARBER & OSGERBY

BARONCELLI

ARPER

ATRIUM/ FLOS

Edward Barber OBE and Jay Osgerby OBE have devised a dramatic kinetic sculp-ture for the V&A’s Raphael Gallery; Double Space for BMW: Precision and Poetry in Motion. Fascinated by movement and performance, the designers have explored these themes to create a totally new experience of the architecture and paintings. Two huge reflective structures will be suspended in the centre of the gallery; their choreographed movements will distort the view of the Raphael cartoons on dis-play, and involve the viewer in the performance. Supported by BMW, this feat of engineering chimes with BMW’s own technological innovation and precision with a dramatic structure that is sure to amaze and delight.

London based design studio Baroncelli celebrate their 20th anniversary this year. Founded by Rinda Baroncelli in 1994, Baroncelli has developed into a contem-porary studio, now led by Creative Director, Giovanni Corrado, Rinda’ son. Un-der Giovanni’s direction, Baroncelli has established itself as an innovative studio; Giovanni has expanded the design brief, continuing to work with master crafts-men to push creativity and explore new ways of designing with glass. Baroncelli will be showcasing their signature designs at designjunction and Decorex this September and launching the Arlo chandelier and Atomos wall light to mark their anniversary.

Weaving through a space with subtle dexterity, Zinta, a modular sofa system by Italian furniture company Arper, will be on display their Clerkenwell showroom during the London Design Festival showcasing the options available from this versatile product. With showrooms located in Milan, Cologne, Stockholm and New York, the London showroom in Clerkenwell is the company’s flagship space. The showroom presents the opportunity to share the company’s design vision - the pursuit of the essential - with the London design community. Designed by re-nowned architects 6A, who share Arper’s values of simplicity through pure de-sign, it focuses on elegance, sensuality of form, avioding the superfluous.

London lighting showroom Atrium provides the setting for Architectural Light-ing, a collaboration with FLOS and Swedish photographer Carl Kleiner, for this year’s Festival. The exhibition comprises a series of beautifully realised abstract photographic compositions, aligned into perfect geometric grids. Each one incor-porates FLOS luminaries together with sections of coloured paper and industrial materials such as sandpaper, marble, wood and brass. The Architectural Lighting exhibition was first shown in Milan and this is its first time in the UK. Atrium’s new showroom is close to Old Street, at the heart of East London’s creative industries hub.

BARRAFINA (NO BOOKING)Brothers Sam and Eddie Hart brought Spain to the cobbled streets of Soho with their first Barrafina. With another branch in Covent Garden, the concept sees guests fully focusing on the food: stools sit around the long marble bar, looking inward to an open kitchen with a charcoal-fired Josper oven. There is an extensive wine list and a huge range of sherries, to compliment the meats. From classic tortillas to quail escabeche, Barrafina mainly use English ingredients to mirror Spanish cooking

EMBER YARDSoho’s Berwick Street is home to Ember Yard – an outstanding restaurant from Salt Yard taking its inspiration from Spanish and Italian methods of cooking over char-coal. The open plan kitchen’s main feature is the custom-built charcoal fired grill in the centre, which means it is no surprise that the menu devised by Chef Director Ben Tish and Head Chef Jacques Fourie is almost entirely grill based.

POLPOA little piece of Venice in the heart of Soho. Polpo in Beak Street is based on the bacari - or wine bars frequently found in the city famous for its canals. The Italian menu is typical of the type you would find in the bacari of Venice offering small plates and traditional cicheti, Northern Italian wines as well as the classic Italian dishes. The attractive interior of exposed brickwork gives this early eighteenth cen-tury building a modern appeal.

THE PALOMARThe creation of prominent chefs Layo and Zoe Paskin, The Palomar offers the tra-ditional experience of Jerusalem – from the food to the feel of the place, which is 1930s decadence by way of travel, romance and adventure. You can either go casual at the Kitchen Bar (where walk-ins are welcomed), or book for the main restaurant, the still-intimate 35-seater at the back of the venue, and behind the venue’s open-plan kitchen where the chefs can be seen at work.

PAVILIONPavilion is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The modern, UK-facing dishes are prepared in-house and the results are complex without being experimental. Taking centre stage in the restaurant, the beautiful pewter bar is an ideal place to enjoy in-novative cocktails, fine champagnes and its own menu available throughout the day.

SCOTT’SScott’s is considered to be the second oldest restaurant in London. It originally started life as an oyster warehouse in Haymarket in 1851. Opened by a young fish-monger, it rapidly gained its reputation as one of London’s finest seafood eateries. Though the menu stays true to its seafood heritage, you’ll also find seasonal game options. The décor features a marble-topped crustacea bar that takes centre stage, mosaic flooring, and diners can sink into brown leather banquettes.
