• Beaware.Awarenessofyoursurroundingsadds toyour safety.Look to see who is ahead, beside andbehind you.Avoid using personal electronics whilewalking.Communicatevisuallythatyouarecalmandconfident.Trustyourinstincts.

• Avoid intoxicants that can diminish yourawareness.Whenyouattendsocialfunctions,neverleave drinks unattended.Don’t accept drinks fromsomeoneyoudonotknow.

• Whenwalkingatnight,usewell-litwalkways.

• Ifyouarebeingfollowed,crossthestreetorchangedirection. Head for well-lit areas such as residencehalls, stores, offices or classroom buildings wherepeoplemaybepresent.

• Carry a safety whistle. The Campus SafetyWhistle Stop program provides safety whistles atnocost.WhistlesareavailableattheCampusSafetyCenterandduringCrimePreventionpresentations.Presentations are scheduled periodically atvarious locationsoncampus. E-phonesBlue-light emergency phones (E-phones) areinstalled at various locations throughout thecampus,i.e.,walkways,parkinglotsandinsomebuildings.TherearenumerousE-phonesinstalledon campus for emergency assistance.Whenyou pick up an E-phone, you are immediatelyconnectedtotheCampusSafetyDispatchCenterat 303.871.3000 (1-3000). Please familiarizeyourselfwiththelocationofE-phonesonroutesthatyou frequently travel.E-phones are continuallybeing added on campus. Sexual Assault and Gender ViolenceIf you or someone you know is hurt and/or inimmediate danger, call 911 then 303.871.3000 (1-3000). The majority of crimes occurring on campusinvolveburglaryortheftofproperty.Youcanhelpprevent these criminal acts by following thesesecuritytips:

• Lock your doors and windows.Many theftsinresidencehallsandofficesaretheresultofroomsleftunsecured.Securingyourresidencehall roomorofficewill significantlydecreaseyourvulnerabilitytotheft.

• Vehicles are often the target of crime in ourcampus parking lots.Remove all valuablesfromyourvehicle, i.e.,CDs, stereo faceplates,pulloutstereos, textbooks,wallets,backpacks,etc.Store all valuables in the trunk or takethem with you. Park your vehicle in well-litparkingareas.

• Bicycles are also common targets forthieves.DU policy requires anyone using abicycle on University property to secure ittoabicyclerackwithaU-lockingdeviceoracase-hardened lock and chain.Register yourbicycle with the Transportation Center.Foradditional bicycle registration information,visitwww.du.edu/transcenter.

• Considerrentingafloorsafeforyourresidencehallroomtostorevaluableitems.Foradditionalsafe rental information, contact Housingand Residential Education at 303.871.2246 (1-2246).

• Beware of individuals, such as magazine andnewspaper solicitors, who may attempt to gainaccess to residence halls by “piggy backing”through secured doors.Anyone legitimatelyaccessing residence halls will have a valididentificationcardthatgrantsaccess.

• Do not leave laptops unattended at anytime.Register your laptop with UniversityTechnologyServices(UTS).Foradditionallaptopregistration information,visitwww.du.edu/uts.Consider purchasing a locking device for yourcomputer,availableattheDUbookstore.

• Do not leave keys, backpacks, briefcases orpurses unsecured at any time. Universityemployeesshouldsecurevaluablesina lockeddeskorfilecabinet.

• Maintain control of office keys, master keysand access cards to your building.Do notloan keys or access cards to anyone.If akey or access card is lost or stolen, report itimmediately to your supervisor, to CampusSafetyandtoFacilitiesManagement.

Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.)R.A.D. isawomen-onlyself-defenseclassofferedthroughouttheUnitedStatesandCanada,primarilyon college campuses. The program is designedto develop and enhance self-defense options sothey become viable for women being attacked.According to R.A.D., 90 percent of self-defenseis risk awareness and avoidance.For additionalinformation,visit www.du.edu/campus-safetyandwww.rad-systems.com.

Critical Incident Notification System (CINS)DUhasimplementedtheCriticalIncidentNotificationSystem(CINS)throughwhichwecancommunicateurgentmessagestoyouviatextmessages,automatedvoice communication and e-mail. Active Shooter TrainingTragediessuchastherecentshootingsatNorthernIllinoisUniversityandVirginiaTechareasoberingreminder that we should all be prepared in casetheunthinkable shouldhappen tomembersofourcommunityorontheUniversityofDenvercampus.Forthisreason,thechancellor,provost,seniorstaffand members of the Administrative Council havedecidedtoprovidetrainingtostudents,faculty,andstaffthatwillpreparealltorespondeffectivelyinanemergencysituationinvolvinganactiveshooterontheDUcampus.Safetyistheconcernofusall,soweaskthatyoustepforwardandcompletethistrainingassoonaspossible.Thetrainingisavailableonlineat: www.du.edu/campus-safety/active/player.html.For additional active shooter information, contactthe Campus Safety Crime Prevention Officer at303.871.3019(1-3019).

Students of ConcernStudents may display any number of warningsigns when they are in personal or academicstress. The Students of Concern (SOC) Report isfacilitated by the Office of the Assistant Provostand his/her designee. The confidentiality of thereport is based on the content of what is beingreported.Faculty,staff,parentsandotherstudentswho are concerned about a student or desireconsultationorassistance inmakingareferralareencouraged to use the SOC reporting system as aresource. As a service to the University community, theDepartmentofParkingandTransportationServicesfacilitatestheoperationoftheDUShuttle.Initiatedbyundergraduateandgraduatestudentgroups,theDU Shuttle uses a small fleet of passenger vansto service fixed routes, stopping at high-trafficdestinations throughout campus. These routesrequire approximately 25 minutes to circulate.Anyone with a DU Pioneer Card may use thisserviceatnochargetotravelsafelyandconvenientlyaroundcampus.Typically,theDUShuttleoperatesduringscheduledacademicquarters.

Contact the DU Shuttle office at 303.871.3842 (1-3842) for additional information. Accommodationsin the form of a wheelchair-accessible van maybe arranged by calling this number as well. For acomplete listing of routes, times and stops, visit www.parking.du.edu.

DU Shuttle Bike Theft Prevention Program

BecauseCampusSafetyiscommittedtothesecurityofbicyclesatDU,allbicyclesparkedonUniversitypropertymustbeproperlysecuredwitha“U-Lock”lockingdevice.Aheavy-duty,casehardenedchainor lock that measures at least 5/16” thick is alsoacceptable.Cablesandordinarypadlocksareeasilydefeatedandshouldneverbeusedtosecurebikes.Bicyclesshouldbeproperlysecuredtooneofmanybicycle racks available throughout campus.Avoidattaching bicycles to other objects such as trees,guardrailsandlightposts.

CampusSafetywillimmobilizeanybicyclefoundwithaninadequatelockingdevice(i.e.,acableorchain).Bicyclesnotclaimedwithinsevendayswillberemovedforsafekeeping. Tohaveabikereleased,youmustcontacttheDepartmentofParkingandTransportationServicesduringregularbusinesshoursandprovideproofofownership.Anybicyclenotclaimedwithin90dayswillbesoldatauctiontothehighestbidder.Proceedsfromtheseauctionsarereinvested inavarietyofDUbicycle securityprogramsandequipment.
