Wesley Theological Seminary

Letter from the Office of Community Life

Welcome Home! Whether you are a new student to our school or a returning member of

our community, I am so glad that you are here. Wesley Theological Seminary is one of the

largest protestant seminaries in the world-but we foster a small-community feeling. It is

our hope that you feel the warmth of our community through diverse interactions and

encounters with the student body, faculty, and staff as you discern your calling to minister

to the world. I pray that every preparation made for your studies will help to be a blessing

in your journey of theological education.

As the Program Administrator in the Office of Community Life, it is my job to foster and

facilitate communications and resources as you prepare for your seminary studies. This

includes new student orientation, disability/accommodation support, and the Board of

Ordained Ministry visits, etc. The Office of Community Life strives to strengthen community

by ensuring that the inclusivity of all remains at the core of our community covenant. I love

that my job offers me an opportunity to work with faculty, staff and students to provide the

same support that was offered to me when I first arrived to the Wesley Community.

I hope that this is the beginning of a similarly positive experience for you as you discern

your journey of theological education. This booklet was created to be a resource for you as

you are introduced to life here— in DC, at Wesley, and as a student. It was designed to

assist with on-campus matters as well as local off campus matters, including information

on where to get a nearby late night bite, or how to navigate the metro. I encourage you all

to refer to this booklet, frequently, as you transition into our beloved community. If you

have any questions about the information here or anything else, please don’t be afraid to

stop by Trott 105, call or send an email. I love visitors!

Sincerely,

Ja’el Daniely

Program Administrator, Office of Community Life & Executive Assistant to the Dean of

Community Life

Travel from Main Campus

There are many ways to get from Main Campus to Wesley Downtown. This will help you choose whether to drive, metro, or bus.

Driving/biking:

When leaving Wesley’s Main Campus, turn right on Massachusetts Ave toward Ward Circle.

You will follow Massachusetts Ave through four traffic circles before reaching the Wesley Downtown Campus.

Be sure to leave yourself extra time if traveling during rush hour.

Metro:

Take the Red line from Tenleytown station to the Gallery Place-Chinatown station. Walk .5 miles from Gallery Place-Chinatown to MVS, or transfer lines toward the

Mount Vernon Square station. If you transfer at Gallery Place-Chinatown, take the Green line toward Greenbelt or

the Yellow Line toward Fort Totten or Mount Vernon Square. You can then walk roughly .3 miles to Wesley Downtown

Bus:

Take the N4 bus toward Farragut Square from in front of campus (Massachusetts and 45th street).

Transfer at Farragut Square (the terminus)… o … to the G8 toward Avondale and get off at 11th & K Streets NW. Walk .2

miles to MVS. o … to the DC Circulator toward Union Station and get off at New York Ave &

9th Street NW. Walk .1 miles to Wesley Downtown..

There may be even more options for taking the bus to MVS than what are listed here. The Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority’s website has a helpful Trip Planner Tool to assist you with directions for public transportation. You may find that the Circulator is less crowded than Metro bus, even though its fares are cheaper!

Getting Around the City

Getting around the city can seem daunting to the uninitiated. Here is a quick guide to help you orient yourself on city streets.

Facts:

The District is divided into four quadrants: Northwest (NW), Northeast (NE), Southeast (SE), and Southwest (SW).

The Capitol Building is the “center” of the city. That is, the numbers and letters of streets extend out from that point.

Lettered streets run east to west, approximately parallel to East and West Capitol Streets.

Once the lettered alphabet has ended, streets are named according to the alphabet and the number of syllables (Adams, Bryant, Channing, then later Aspen, Butternut, Cedar, etc.)

Numbered streets run north to south, approximately parallel to North and South Capitol Streets.

Broad avenues are named for states (e.g. Massachusetts Ave), and run diagonally across the city, connecting major points of interest.

Where avenues intersect with each other or with streets, there are traffic circles and each circle in the city has a name (e.g. Ward Circle).

The District is also bounded by diagonal avenues: Western Ave, Eastern Ave, and Southern Ave. Nearest to campus is Western Ave, once you cross Western you are in Maryland.

Washington, DC is roughly 60 square miles.

The city was designed by Pierre Charles L’Enfant, based on plans of Paris and other European cities that Thomas Jefferson brought to America.

The Washington Monument is the city’s tallest structure, though there is no law prohibiting buildings based on its height nor the height of the Capitol Building (despite popular belief).

DC Metro

Metrorail Metro fare is determined by the distance and time you are traveling. Metrorail fares range from a minimum of $1.60 to maximum of $5.00, depending on

your destination and the time of day (rush hour is more). Transfers are free for travel within Metrorail, and you can transfer to Metro bus at a

discount when using a SmarTrip card. You must purchase a fare card at the station before boarding the train. SmarTrip cards are available at the Metro Center station, Giant grocery stores, select

CVS stores, and online at wmata.com. Metrorail runs: Sunday-Thursday: 5:30am-12:00am, and Friday-Saturday: 8:00am-

2:00am

Metro bus The N4, N6, and N8 buses stop on Massachusetts Avenue in front of the Seminary. The N4, and N6 buses run from Friendship Heights to Farragut Square down

Massachusetts Ave. The N8 bus drives a loop, which begins and ends at the Van Ness Metro Station and

stops at the Tenleytown Metro Station. The fare is $1.50 with a SmarTrip card and $1.70 with cash/coin. You must have the

exact change or SmarTrip card. Transfers between buses in a two hour period are free when using SmarTrip.

DC Circulator This bus system runs five select routes through the city with limited stops:

Georgetown-Union Station, Woodley Park-Adams Morgan-McPherson Square Metro, DuPont Circle-Georgetown-Rosslyn, Union Station-Navy Yard, and Potomac Ave Metro-Skyland Via Barracks Row.

Regular fare is $1. Transfers between Circulator buses or Metro buses are free within a two hour

period and 50¢ from Metrorail.

Metro etiquette dictates that riders should stand to the right and walk on the left when using escalators in the system.

If you have a question about the destination or route of a bus, ask the driver, he or she can help you determine your stop. SmarTrip cards are permanent, reloadable fare cards and can be used on Metrorail, Metro bus, DC Circulator, and many of the bus lines in the suburbs.

DC Metro Map

Bicycles are allowed on Metrorail from 7-10 am and 4-7 pm during weekdays and all day on the weekends and most federal holidays. They are not permitted during events when large crowds are expected. Those traveling with a bicycle should board through the end doors of a rail car.

Library, Mailroom & IT Support

Library

Students with a current and valid Wesley Theological Seminary ID are able to borrowmaterial from the library. A validation sticker from the business office is required on your ID. Books may be borrowed for 28 days at a time. Books from the libraries of the Washington Theological Consortium may be ordered for borrowing from the Wesley library.

The library also has computers, printers, and photocopiers. A $1 copy card must be purchased and then additional money may be added. Black and white copies and photocopies are $0.10 per page.

Mail Room

The mailroom and copy center are located on the bottom floor of the Kresge Academic Center, KG04. Mailbox assignments may be acquired there. A key deposit of $25.00 is required. Since there are not enough mailboxes available for the number of students, in many cases two share one mailbox. So, if you find more than one copy of a general circular in your box, take one copy and leave the other for your box mate.

IT E-Support

Should you have trouble with Wesley Web, your Wesley e-mail account, Blackboard or the wireless internet on campus, you can send a help request online at http://services.wesleyseminary.edu

Coffee and tea are available for purchase in the lounge section of the library. Useful programs such as Bible Works are also available for your use on the computers in the library. Be sure to check your Wesley email regularly as it is the official means to communication. You can program your Wesley email to forward to a personal email if you prefer.

Housing

Regulations & Procedures

Included for your reference is an abbreviated version of your housing contract. Please note that this is not a comprehensive compilation of the regulations and procedures for campus housing at Wesley Seminary. Please refer to your official housing contract for the complete policy.

Conduct and Consideration of Residents For all residents in resident housing, it is essential that residents show mutual respect for one another to allow all to study and sleep in reasonable comfort. The Seminary requires that residents show to each other mutual respect and consideration that neighbors or members of any community owe to each other. Excessive noise is a particularly serious offense against other members of the community. Residents must use musical equipment and instruments, TV sets and the like with consideration of other residents. Voices must also be used in consideration of the needs of others for reasonable quiet and privacy. Quiet hours will be in effect from 11:00pm until 8:00am. The Seminary reserves the right to make other such rules as may be necessary for the safety, care, and cleanliness of the units, and for insuring the health, comfort and convenience of all residents of Seminary housing. No oral statements or agreements shall be binding on either the Seminary or the resident. Care of Premises Although units should be clean and in good condition when residents move in, residents accept the units “as is" by moving in. If residents notice any damage to the unit when they move in, they must report the damage to the Seminary in writing within one week of occupancy. Residents are responsible for maintaining their unit in a decent, safe and sanitary condition. No alternation can be made to the unit. Damage caused by nails, screws or adhesives used on the walls is considered to be beyond normal wear and tear. Any necessary repairs due to damages caused by the resident, above the security deposit, will be charged to the resident. Residents are responsible for replacing all window screens removed or damaged. Alternations or damage to the grounds or landscaping caused by the resident will be charged to the resident. Garbage and waste should be enclosed in plastic garbage bags and emptied from the room on a timely basis. A dumpster is located in the parking lot. Recycling is mandated by the District of Columbia; receptacles are available at the dumpster and on each floor of Straughn. Only light bulbs of 60 watts or less are permissible in overhead light fixtures.

immediate eviction. 11. Smoking is not permitted in or within 25 feet of any Seminary buildings.

General Security and Loss of Property While the safety of members of the community and the protection of Seminary and personal property are a common concern of all members of the Wesley community, each resident is responsible for her or his own safety. The Seminary particularly requests the cooperation of residents in maintaining the security of each building. Residents should keep their room door and entry doors locked and their windows secured. When staying in campus housing, it is important to keep your room locked while you are not there. Do not prop the front doors open and close them behind you to prevent individuals not affiliated with Wesley entering the residence halls and posing a threat to security. Please report suspicious behavior to your Resident Managers.

Entry and Inspection

The Seminary reserves the right to enter and inspect any resident room because of the reasonable need to prevent violations of safety and other Seminary regulations, to determine whether such violations have occurred, to provide maintenance or improvement of the unit by the Seminary. A time may be arranged for inspection, but inspection may also be made without prior notice, when necessary.

Services & Facilities

Maintenance Needs

Facilities and Grounds keeping are responsible for maintenance and care of the physical property, with offices located in the maintenance garage in front of Carroll Hall. The facilities manager, the Resident Manager on Duty, and the Housing Office should be

29

Available for student use is a pool table, ping pong table, stationary bike, elliptical machine, and treadmill. Straughn Food Pantry One unique service the seminary provides to students is the community Food Pantry. This pantry is located in the basement of Straughn Dormitory, and is an open pantry, open to any student who might be in need of the shelf-stable contents at any time. You are invited to share of the sustenance of the pantry or contribute to it at any time. Pianos There are pianos located in the lobbies of Carroll Hall and in Welliver lounge. Playing time is limited to one hour and is not permitted during quiet hours. Piano hours available for practice are 10:00am-8:00pm daily.

Printing services are free in the computer lounge. Food and drinks are not permitted in the computer lounge. Welliver Lounge Welliver Lounge is located on the lower level of Straughn Hall as a space for fellowship and fun. A large screen television with satellite access is pro-vided as well as games and other entertainment. As this is the only space designated for such activities on campus, priority is given to students who desire to have communion with others over those wishing to study. The library, the Straughn computer lounge, the prayer room, and the sub-basement study room are provided for students seeking a quiet study zone. Quiet hours still apply to Welliver Lounge.

30

Prayer Room There is a prayer room available to students, located in the basement of Straughn Hall. This small room is open to any student at any time, but may also be reserved for prayer or worship. Please contact the Office of Community Life & Housing to reserve the prayer room. Straughn Study Lounge The study lounge is located on the lowest level of Straughn Hall. There are tables and chairs available for individual or group studying. The area also has outlets for computers and is equipped with wireless internet. There is also a dry erase board available for your use. All students are welcome to use this space. Community Garden There are several garden plots located beside the old President’s House behind Straughn Hall. These are available for a small fee each year. You may contact the Housing Office for further information.

Resident Managers The Housing Office employs ten Resident Managers who live on campus and assist residents and guests after hours. Should an emergency situation arise during the hours of 4:30pm-8:30am, please contact the Resident Manager on duty by calling (202) 246-8251. Saturday Suppers The Office of Community Life & Housing is blessed to work with the United Methodist Church’s Women’s Guild in providing suppers on Saturday nights for Straughn residents. The Women’s Guild and the Office wish to provide a meal every Saturday, but this is not guaranteed. Residents are asked to bring their own dishes and utensils and those residents who partake of the meal are required to help clean up when the meal is over. Bicycles All bicycles must be registered with the Office of Community Life & Housing. The registration sticker must be on all bicycles parked on campus. 600 Keys Access to the offices and services located in Straughn requires a 600 Key. Keys may be checked out to non-resident students in the Housing, Office but must be returned to the Office the Friday before Commencement each spring. Commuter Lockers Lockers are provided for commuter residents. The locker room is located in the basement of Kresge Academic Building. To sign up for a locker, please contact the Office of Community Life. 31

and emergency postings made by the Facilities Staff. There are no other exceptions. Signs will be immediately removed if violated.

Straughn Air Conditioner Usage

Manual Drainage When the portable air conditioner is in cooling or dry mode, it will dehumidify the air. The water dehumidified from the air will be collected in an internal reservoir. This water will be used to help cool the compressor and it will be evaporated and exhausted out the exhaust hose. This unit is designed to exhaust most or all condensate water collected out of the air, but in very humid conditions, the internal reservoir may fill completely. This causes the air conditioner to turn off to avoid overflowing the internal reservoir. The portable air conditioner will begin beeping and the Run light will begin blinking and/or the display will show the E7 code. Drain the unit to return to normal operation.

Drain Parts: 1. Drain (there is a rubber plug inside the hole) 2. Drain cap 3. Drain hose 4. Drain tray Draining with the drain tray 1. Make sure the unit is off. 2. Position the drain tray on the floor beneath the

drain. 3. Unscrew the drain cap from the drain. Remove the

rubber plug from the drain. 4. Monitor the drain tray. When the drain tray is

almost full, insert the rubber plug back into the drain and screw the drain cap back onto the drain.

5. Empty the drain tray. 6. Repeat steps 1-5 as necessary.

There are buckets located in each room to help in removing the water from the air conditioning unit. Dump water from the tray into the bucket and then dispose of the water to ensure that water is not spilled.
