Using simple hand-building techniques and incorporating mold-made forms, students will produce numerous objects to cover with brightly colored glaze, then assemble and arrange as a sculpture installation within the Museum’s Riley Gallery. Students are encouraged to bring along photographs for reference. In the studio we’ll get familiar with the fundamentals of drawing, painting, and printmaking to create storybook characters of our very own. Fit for Royalty Saturdays: July 14, 21, 28; 10-11:30 am A collection of British art featuring kings, queens, and even royal pets will inspire students to create artworks fit for royalty. We’ll visit grand portraits of fancily dressed people and look closely for castles hidden in landscapes. In the studio we’ll practice drawing regal faces and people, and design banners for our family castle. Horsin’ Around Saturdays: August 11, 18, 25; 10-11:30 am The Museum will be extra full of horses this summer! A special group of stallions and mares will visit all the way from Great Britain (in paintings, of course!). Help us introduce these posh ponies to Joslyn’s bucking broncos and learn to create equestrian sculptures and paintings in the studio. Drawing People Saturdays: June 23, 30, July 7, 14; 1-3 pm Learn the ins and outs of drawing people. We’ll look to portraits and figures in the galleries to help us better understand what is often one of the most challenging subjects to draw. Artworks in the galleries will guide your young artist as we learn to use the elements of art to create paintings, prints, and sculpture. Students will spend time exploring line, texture, space, color, and value to create their very own masterpieces.

Color Magic June 25-28; 9-11:30 am

Explore the magical power of color! Students will concoct color combinations to learn how to mix new colors, and produce potent patterns and explosive pictures full of emotion. We’ll put our colorful spells to use in painting, prints, and more.

Regal PeopleJuly 9-12; 9-11:30 am

We’ll act like artistic aristocrats as we create artworks about people. An exhibition of British artworks, featuring notable nobles, will guide us as we learn painting, drawing, and printmaking techniques and make portraits, fashionable figures, and even royal pets.

How Do Dinosaurs Make Art?July 23-26; 9-11:30 am

An exhibition featuring illustrations by Mark Teague of dinosaurs going to school and getting ready for bed will encourage us to ask, “How do dinosaurs make art?” We’ll think like dinosaurs as we create dino-portraits, prehistoric landscapes, and other Mesozoic artworks.

Spend mornings at The Rose and walk to Joslyn for afternoons of exploring the exciting world of theatrical design! Discover what it takes to make scenery, costumes, props, lighting, and sound for productions. Meet professional designers and technicians and create lots of hands-on theatrical scenery and props to be used in an upcoming Rose production!

Take your pencil beyond the doodle and start to draw like an artist! Experience a series of artists’ exercises to train your hand to draw what you see and create finished drawings using a variety of tools such as pencil, charcoal, pastels, and more.

Printmaking is a hands-on; roll-up-your-sleeves kind of art making that allows you to produce artistic images again and again. We will look to works in the galleries for patterns, lines, and art styles that will inspire designs we’ll print on clothing, posters, flags, and more.

Sculptors create three-dimensional artworks using all sorts of materials and methods. Campers will see sculptures in the galleries made from clay, wood, glass, wire, and metal to understand how each artist created a carefully balanced standing structure. In the studio we’ll combine, build, and carve to create sculptures of our own.

Nearly anything can be used to make art - and sometimes artists mix it all together! This camp will explore art made by combining several materials and techniques. We’ll mix together printmaking, painting, and sculpture methods to create mixed-media artworks.

We’ll visit the galleries to see the greatest hits of the collection and make paintings, sculptures, and prints in the studio. Special guests will stop by to tell us about their jobs in the Museum and we’ll take a peek into areas off limits to visitors.

Draw and paint people after gaining inspiration from royal portraits in an exhibition of British art. Students will learn the rules of facial structure to accurately capture a person’s likeness, practice figurative proportion to draw regal poses, and adorn their subjects with attributes to elevate their nobility.

Roam the galleries to find paintings that purr and sculptures that bite. We’ll look to see how artists use texture, pattern, and shape to make lifelike animal artworks. After our adventures through the Museum we will make sculptures, paintings, and prints of animals.

TEEN CAMPS

Alternative Art @ The UnionJune 4-8; 9:30 am-12:30 pm

Sticker design, screen printing, and zine publication, are ways to take art out of the gallery and into the real world. This camp will apply art-making techniques and principles to outlets that reach people beyond the traditional art audience.

Drawing @ CUJune 18-22, 9:30 am-12:30 pm

Strengthen your drawing skills! Through model studies and observational exercises this camp will teach you to accurately render proportion, perspective, mass, and value, using media including pencil, charcoal, and pen and ink.

Oil Painting @ CUJuly 16-20; 9:30 am-12:30 pm

This camp will teach the basics of oil painting. Learn to use a brush, palette knife, and layers of color to create observational painting studies.

TWO-WEEK CAMP

Ceramics @ The UnionJuly 23-27 & July 30-August 3; 9:30 am-12:30 pm

Joslyn Members: $204; General Public: $240

Learn hand-building and wheel-thrown ceramic techniques. This two-week camp will allow you to take your time as you learn each step of making wheel-thrown pots and hand-built objects with guidance and encouragement from your instructor.

Joslyn’s refund policy is as follows: 50% refund for cancellations made up to two weeks prior to the class start date; no refunds for cancellations made less than two weeks before a class begins. Student Art Display The Riley Education Gallery, located near the Museum’s classrooms, features artwork by children and adults in Joslyn’s classes. Four times each year a selection of new work is displayed. Stop by to see what our students are doing!

Art Class Scholarships Thanks to a special fund established by Mrs. Louise Wickstrum and the family of David S. and Bella Block, financial assistance may be available for class enrollment. If a child’s or adult’s participation is dependent upon financial aid, please call (402) 661-3846. All requests will be held in confidence.

Photography Joslyn will occasionally photograph students in classes for use in promotional materials, including the Museum’s website. If you do not want you or your child to be photographed, please notify Joslyn’s Criss Center for Education in writing.
