Innovative ideas

for early childhood professionals

Page 2: C&K presents Innovative ideas - candk.asn.au

In a time where social, technological and economic changes seem to reshape contemporary life on a daily basis, the need to continually reflect upon our personal and professional values is essential.

Through engagement with children, families, community and colleagues, along with professional knowledge and reflective practice, early childhood educators occupy a potent position teaching and learning alongside our youngest citizens.

C&K is proud to support all early childhood educators on their respective professional development journeys. Throughout 2014 we will offer a variety of professional development opportunities across the state that will inform, challenge and inspire.

Concurrent sessions

Keynote address: 9.30am - 10.30am

Oral language: A strong foundation for lifelong learning Presenter – Bronwyn Reguson

For all children, becoming an effective communicator is a lifelong learning journey which starts from birth. Children’s communication development is exponential in the first 5 years and research indicates that oral language particularly is a key foundation of becoming literate. Research also indicates that children who are good listeners and speakers go on to become good readers and writers. This presentation will address foundations of communication development, partnerships with families and evidence based practice for early childhood professionals to enhance oral language learning for all children.

Concurrent session one: 11.00am - 12.00pm

Workshop 1: Speech and language: Practical tips for teachers to help children become effective communicators

Typically, young children communicate in a variety of ways and as they mature rely increasingly upon spoken language as their preferred way in which to interact with those around them. For some children, however, for one reason or another, they do not effectively develop their speech or language abilities and are thus inhibited to varying degrees. Although closely related, speech and language are quite different, with speech concerned with the ‘mechanics’ of talking and language as the code we use to understand and convey meaning to those around us.

In this session Bronwyn will assist participants to:

• develop an understanding of typical developmental speech and language milestones

• gain knowledge of speech disorders/delays

• gain knowledge of language disorders

• discuss practical strategies for early childhood professionals to enhance the speech and language skills of children at risk and the red flags for early intervention

• discuss how children and families can be supported Presenter – Bronwyn Reguson – See keynote speaker profile on page 5

Workshop 2: The importance of active play – Part A: Free range or containerised kids?

In recent times, critical commentary in a range of popular media is painting a disparaging picture about the decline of children’s participation in active play. Reasons put forward for this include changes to the ways families live, the idea that Generation X parents have become the ‘fear generation’, concerns over safety, limited play spaces, as well as extra red-tape and over regulation. This presentation explores some of these factors and balances them against a desire to allow children to be actively ‘free ranged’. It challenges educators to consider the implications of our current context and rethink the possibilities and implications of our actions on the decision making, support and environments we provide for active play. Concurrent sessions continued

Concurrent session two: 12.00pm - 1.00pm

Workshop 1: Engagement, relationships and reflection

At the start of each year early childhood educators are introduced to unfamiliar children and families, and sometimes to new colleagues and work environments. There are relationships to build, understandings to reach and new ideas to explore.

Through experience and reflection we can develop a professional approach that supports all stakeholders; children, families, colleagues and ourselves.. Presenter - Trevor Brown Trevor Brown is C&K’s Professional Development Coordinator. Prior to holding this position, Trevor was an Early Childhood Advisor with C&K for 4 years, supporting educators in Brisbane, the South West and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander services in Southern Queensland.

Trevor is an experienced early childhood educator who has worked as a Teacher and Director for nearly 20 years. He has a deep interest in early childhood and the arts and has also developed and presented a variety of professional workshops for educators.

Workshop 2: The importance of active play – Part B: Putting the F into play!

For many children, opportunities for active play are becoming more and more restricted. There are also a huge range of other competing, more sedentary interests (television, video, computer and playstation) stopping children from getting outdoors and engaging in active play. How an adult looks at fitness and physical activity is different to how children perceive it. Children are not mini-adults. They get all the activity they need when they are allowed to move freely and engage in active play. The trick is to create environments or provide experiences that encourage physical activity – whilst remembering that it needs to be wrapped around ‘FUN’!

This action packed session provides a range of ideas and suggestions about how to find moments in a busy day for active play and to move and have fun, no matter what the age group. Bring lots of energy to this session, where you will move and groove but also be provided with opportunities to adapt suggestions to your own context and age group.

Alice Brown – See keynote speaker profile on page 5

Concurrent session three: 2.00pm - 3.00pm

Workshop 1: Promoting behaviour expectations in the early childhood environment

Teaching in an early childhood setting is demanding because the children come from a wide variety of backgrounds and bring with them many different experiences. It is also often a child’s first time in a large group. Setting up positive behaviour expectations and consistently using these is the key to any successful early childhood teaching and learning environment. This workshop will provide ideas and examples of ways to promote positive behaviour in your setting and assist you in addressing behaviour issues at the beginning of the year so you can then successfully teach your group. Presenter - Kym Blake Kym Blake is an experienced Senior Teacher in early childhood education who has been teaching for 22 years across a range of settings. Currently Kym teaches prep at Edge Hill State School in Cairns. Her passion has always been in teaching early childhood.

Workshop 2: Presenting songs and stories that children will want to sit still for... and join in with too!

Mat-time is the perfect time to engage children in language based experiences. Singing, song writing and storytelling develop creative abilities, memory and an ear for how sounds go together. It also provides opportunities for turn-taking and for sharing of experiences. We will be learning some new songs and dances, and revisiting some old favourites. Presenter - Linda Bates Linda Bates has been a teacher of young children for the past 36 years, 20 of those with C&K. In her life outside of the kindergarten, Linda is actively involved in both the visual and performing arts mediums and loves the chance to share her passion with children and with other educators.

Closing keynote address: 3.00pm - 4.00pm

Power lunches with leaders of tomorrow

As part of their jobs, some people have power lunches, rub shoulders with movie stars and millionaires or invent lifesaving cures. But who deals with the real ‘movers and shakers’? Those who have the privileged job of working with young children – our richest asset!

Strong in potential, the owners of 100 billion brain cells, each unique and full of the capacity to wonder, and the best researchers in the world, because they always ask the question... ‘Why?’

This presentation provokes us to question ‘what our role is’ in supporting these movers and shakers in the 21st century. It explores the potential of our youngest group of learners and the need not to waste a moment of this important time in their development. It leaves the participants with the challenge of responding powerfully to the question: “So, what line of work are you in?”
