The R.C. Durr Foundation will

again award three $2500 schol-

arships to graduating high

school seniors who will be at-

tending the University of Ken-

tucky this fall. Recipients must

enroll as full-time students on the U.K. campus.

Kindred Hearts 4-H Club

The Kindred Hearts 4-H Club met on December 3, 2015

at the Care Mission. Caleb Foutch called the meeting to

order at 1:00 p.m. Business consisted of our next meet-

ing, which will be the planning meeting for the upcoming

year. Following the meeting members sorted and hung

clothing at the Care Mission that will be donated to less

fortunate families.

The Kindred Hearts' 4-H Club met on January 8, at the

Southern Campbell County Fire Department. Caleb

Foutch called the meeting to order at 1:00PM. New mem-

bers were welcomed into the Club. Business consisted of

planning our calendar for the upcoming year.

Outstanding 4-H Volunteer

At the January 25th meeting of the Campbell County Extension Council, each program area recog-

nized their outstanding volunteers for 2015-16. This award can only be received once and the names of all

winners are engraved on special plaques hanging at the Extension Service Office.

The outstanding volunteer for 4-H is Kim Henley. She has been

involved in the Campbell County 4-H Program for 10 years as a member

in her youth and 10 years now as a volunteer leader. She started volun-

teering for 4-H when her daughter joined 4-H and became involved in

the 4-H horse project and activities. Kim serves as a volunteer for the

Saddle Up 4-H Club. She has been a certified horse volunteer for 6

years and teaches and coordinates educational opportunities for club

members. She is a western division leader and helps with horse camp

and horse shows. She serves as our county representative to the District

#3 4-H Horse Management Team and represents the district on the State

4-H Advisory Group.

Kim serves on the Campbell County Extension Service Client Protection Committee and is active with

the Northern Kentucky Horse Network. She is married to Frank Henley, and their daughter Jamie is an out-

standing 10 year 4-H member and is currently a freshman at UK.

Kim, on behalf of the 4-H agents, fellow volunteers and all of the youth whose lives you have touched,

we thank you!

Other volunteers recognized were: Jackie Haubner, Barbara Devlin, Donne & Elizabeth Hoffman, Jim

Mayer, Walt Dunlevy and Kevin Hanson.

Livestock Club

The 4-H/FFA Barnyard Buddies Livestock Club met on

December 21, 2015. President Gracie Wright called the

meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. There were two hours of

education before the meeting on the country ham project

and livestock diseases. All club members need to submit

their signed rules paperwork to Mr. Prim. The 2016 vali-

dation site sheets for the various species were passed out

to members present.

The Barnyard Buddies 4-H/FFA Club met on January

18th, 2016 at the Alexandria Fair Grounds. Members

started their Country Ham Projects and learned about farm

equipment safety. There was no business meeting held.

4-H Country Ham Project

The 2016 4-H Country Ham Project is off to a good start. Forty-four hams were trimmed, rubbed with cure mix and hung with care on January 18, 2016.

Kentucky 4-H Volunteer Forum

Hyatt Regency Lexington/Lexington Convention Center

Thursday, February 11 to Saturday, February 13

Campbell County 4-H has 33 delegates registered for the

2016 Kentucky 4-H Volunteer Forum, February 11-13.

Activities include educational tours, workshops and award

presentations.

4-H Livestock Club Has Meeting on Farm Safety

On Monday, January 18, the Campbell County 4-H/FFA Livestock Club met at the Alexandria Fairgrounds to learn about farm and equipment safety. Dale Dobson and Whit-ney Turner from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture presented the program. Part of the program included the Rollover Tractor Simulator which is the only one of its kind in the nation. Thirty club members were present as well as their parents and firemen from the Alexandria and Silver

Grove Fire Stations.

A special thanks to the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and to our new Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture, Ryan Quarles, for providing this education program in

Campbell County!

Livestock Judging

The Campbell County Livestock Judging team will be starting practices in February. All practices will be at the Campbell County High School in the Ag Room from 3:00-5:00. The practices are scheduled for February 11th and February 16th. The first competition will be March 12th in Washington County. We will be attending 2-3 other competitions throughout the spring and summer. If you have an interest in joining the team and have questions,

Teen Club

In December the Teen Club completed a community ser-vice project. The teens travelled to Walmart to buy stock-ing stuffers for the youth that regularly visit the Hosea House in Newport. After shopping the teens came back to

the office and put together the stockings for the teens.

On January 15th and 16th three teens attend-ed the District 3 Teen Retreat at the Louis-ville Zoo. They partici-pated in a behind the scenes tour at the zoo, took a night walk to observe the animals and learned about the operations of the zoo. Included is a pic-ture of the teens with the gorilla on one of

the tours.

4-H is planning a Fami-ly Fun Snow Tubing Night at Perfect North on Friday February 26th (see attached flyer). This will be our Teen Club meeting for February and I encourage eve-ryone to attend! In March we will be partnering with other 4-H clubs to do a service project for the veterans. This meeting will be March 14th at 6:30 at the extension office. Please RSVP for the February meeting by February 15th

so we can plan accordingly.

4-H Communications Events

It’s the time of year for the Campbell County 4-H Communications Events! If you are interested in competing in this year’s communications events, please read the following information very carefully. Email or call Moriah Conrad if you have additional questions.

Speeches: The county wide Speech Finals will be held on Tuesday March 29th. Registration starts at 6:30 PM and the competition begins at 7:00 PM. The Speech Finals will be at the Campbell County Extension Office in Highland Heights. The finals competition is for 4-Hers who have won their school or community 4-H Club competitions.

If you would like to give a speech, but you do not have a school or club competition, you must pre-register for the County Wide Speech Finals no later than March 21st. To register call the Extension Office at 572-2600 and give us your name, birthdate, title, and description of your speech.

Demonstrations: If you are interested in partici-pating in the County Wide Demonstration Finals you must pre-register no later than March 21st. A date will be set for the competition based on the number of participants after pre-registration. In order to register, call the Extension Office at 572-2600 and give us your name, birthdate, title and a description of your demonstration.

Dog Club

A meeting of the Muddy Paws 4-H dog club was held on January 7th at the Extension office. The meeting was called to order by President Morgan. The minutes were read and approved. There were 5 members present. We met our new adult volunteer Joyce and trained our dogs in obedi-ence and showmanship. Our next meeting will be held on 1/21/16.

Saddle Up 4-H Club

The Saddle Up 4H Club January meeting was held at the Campbell County Extension office on January 7, 2016. The education team offered one hour of education prior to the meeting on horse anatomy and 30 minutes after the meeting on markings. The meeting was called to order by President, Kassi Parker. Pledges were led by Catherine Deaton and Nadia Shurley. The November meeting minutes were read by Lydia Deaton and approved. Roll call was taken and we welcomed 2 new members, Olivia and Maggie Hahn. Committee reports were given. A few highlights to share; we are still collecting feed bag tags. We have currently raised over $200 doing this. Please keep the seals from any Southern States or K&M Feed bag. If you need to know what the tag looks like ask Micah Myers. Milestones will go on as planned. We have sever-al senior level students that will not be participating in dis-tricts that are willing to help. Mr. Prim let us know that over 600 people will be attending the volunteer forum next month and Campbell County has the second largest repre-

sentation from the state.

Our next meeting will be held on February 4, 2016 at the Extension office. It is our annual auction. Mrs. Kursell is coordinating the auction this year. Please make sure you bring something to auction off and tell family and friends so they can attend. This is our single biggest fundraiser of

the year.

Upcoming information: T-shirt designs for this year’s camp shirt are due at the March meeting. Please take a few minutes to come up with an idea. You can decide what color shirt your design will be on and what color the letter-

ing will be.

Fourth Grade

Ms. Owen’s Class A meeting of the Fighting Wildcats 4-H Club was held at Newport Intermediate School on 1-13-16. The meeting was called to or-der by Bri, the president. The meeting of the Ferriell 4-H Club was called to order on Jan-uary 7, 2016 by President Luke at Campbell Ridge Elementary School. After our monthly meeting was called to order, we said the Pledge of Allegiance and the 4-H Pledge, Creed and Kenne-dy led the pledges. The topic of our lesson was communications and we learned how to give a speech, how to write a speech and how to deliver a speech. Our next meeting is scheduled for Feb-

ruary 26, 2016.

4-H Cloverbuds

Cloverbuds met on January 13th with 26 members present and on January 14th with 14 members present. They had lots of fun making their own playdoh and making a toilet pa-per game building partners as snowmen. Cloverbuds meet the second Wednesday and Thursday of each month; our next meetings are scheduled for February 10th or you can choose February 11th from 6pm-7pm and March 9th or you can choose March 10th from 6pm-7pm. Our meetings have been filling up quickly, so if your child is in K-3rd grade and interested in joining Cloverbuds, please call 859-572-2600

or email [email protected] to register your child.

Campbell Ridge Elementary School 3rd Grade and

St. Thomas 3rd Grade

3rd grade at Campbell Ridge Elementary and 3rd grade at St. Thomas Elementary learned the importance of gardening. We discussed germination, observed plants through microscopes and each class planted a glass container garden with lettuce seeds. We plan to harvest the lettuce at our upcoming meet-

ings.

St. Thomas 5th Grade

The meeting of the Arnett 4-H club was called to order on Janu-ary 26, 2016 by president Ryan at St. Thomas School. After our monthly meeting was called to order, we said the Pledge of Allegiance and the 4-H Pledge, Tommy K. and Elizabeth led the pledges. The topic of our lesson was communications and we learned about giving speeches. We talked about what you should do when you are public speaking and what you should not do. Then we interviewed the person next to us and made a quick speech about them. Our next meeting is scheduled for

February 23rd.

Main Street CEC 4-H Club

Mrs. McCrann’s Class

A meeting of the Cheetah 4-H Club was held at

Main Street CEC on 1/16/16. The meeting was called to

order by Alex, the president. Pledges were led by Caro-

line and Faith. The minutes were read and approved.

There were 12 members present. Mr. Prim presented a

program on “Health - The Fourth H.” Today we made

jump ropes! We made them with finger weaving loops. I

made mine long enough to jump with. After we finished,

we were “jumping” for joy. It was a lot of fun. It was

really colorful.

Our next meeting will be held in February.

Sts. Peter and Paul 4-H Club

A meeting of the Sts. Peter and Paul 4-H Club

was held at Sts. Peter and Paul School on 1/15/16. The

meeting was called to order by Trevor Shadler, the presi-

dent. Pledges were led by Kaden Shadler and Brad Reis.

The minutes were read and approved. There were 21

members present. The following program was given by

Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Cropenbaker and Mr. Prim: We are

making dog treats to donate to the Campbell County Ani-

mal Shelter.

The meeting of the Huber 4-H Club was called to order on Janu-ary 20, 2016 by President Isabelle at Johnson Elementary. After our monthly meeting was called to order, we said the Pledge of Allegiance and the 4-H Pledge, Lela and Angelica led the pledg-es. The topic of our lesson was communication and we learned 90% of jobs you have to communicate and about verbal and non-verbal communication. Our next meeting is scheduled for Feb-

ruary 9th.
