Thank You!
First of all I want to thank all of the people that made it possible for me to attend the forum in
Wichita, I had a lot of fun. I enjoyed all of my sessions, but the one that really caught my attention was
called, “Have a Project Day.” The workshop was about arranging a project day for the youth in your county.
The kids had to sign up ahead of time and they could select their first and second choice projects. Some of
the projects included: woodworking, photography, shooting sports, birdhouse making, picture board making,
etc. During the workshop they had the attendees make a picture board holder. I thought it was a great idea to
bring back to Vernon County and provide a fun learning experience for our youth. Going to the forum
provided me with many, many great ideas to bring back to the county. When the youth ambassadors plan
their next Super Saturday I will present them with the new projects ideas I have brought back and share with
them the interesting ideas I learned. I want to thank all my sponsors again for allowing me to attend.
Sincerely,
Allison Hawthorne

Vernon County 4-H Leader/Parent Federation Meeting November 14, 2012—Meeting minutes continued
North Central Regional Volunteer Forum Report: We had four people go to Wichita Kansas. They were
Johanna Schuh, Allison Hawthorne, Joanne Hornby and Colleen Pulvermacher. This year’s theme was the
Wizard of Oz Yellow Brick Road. Johanna said it was nice to meet other leaders from Wisconsin. They had
many activities that they could attend and she went to Robotics, Shooting and Rabbits. It was all fun and
interactive. Allison wrote a letter thanking the Federation for helping with the finances to attend this
Regional Forum. She went to workshops that talked about having a Project Day and would like to do one at
our Super Saturday and she learned how to build a picture board holder. Joanne Hornby attended workshops
that worked with T-Shirts, Quilts and Family History. They will not be continuing the regional forums but
will have state forums. Most of the people agreed that it should be continued because you learn so much at
these forums that you can use to take back to your states and individual clubs. They will have state forums.
Sounds like they all had a good time.
Award Selection was tabled because we did not have a list at the meeting.
Educators Written Report: I am teaching at a State 4-H Conference for youth development educators this
week. Lots has happened in the past 5 ½ weeks. Here are the highlights: The North Central Region Volunteer
Forum in Wichita was an excellent trip with lots of great sessions for educators and volunteers alike. Joanne,
Johanna and Allison will report on this further at the meeting. A few Youth Ambassadors did a presentation
for the Liberty Pole Boosters Club which was well received. I taught a session on cover letters and resume
which was attended by 6 youth. I had the privilege of being selected to teach at the National 4-H Agent’s
conference in Orlando. This was a very competitive process, with only 20% of teaching proposals selected.
The session I taught focused on best practices of volunteer development. Also at this conference, I accepted a
regional award on behalf of Vernon County 4-H for Excellence in Volunteerism. I submitted this award
application to reflect the way we utilize volunteer development resources at our leader retreats. The award
was sponsored by Monsanto. We should all be very proud of this accomplishment, as only 4 of these were
presented nationwide. The Badgerland Financial sponsored grant project was completed in October with the
help of a few youth, parents along with fairboard members who replaced a section of the grandstands on a
very cold morning. This $ 1,000 grant was part of the vote for your favorite county fair project. The banquet
committee has met and is planning the banquet for January 13th, with the 20th as a snowdate. They are
working on location. I have been working on the state youth leadership conference scheduled for Dec. 1st and
I am pleased that 8 Vernon County youth have signed up. I am serving as a co-advisor for Space Camp 2013
and have been working on that program as some changes will be in place for 2013. More details on this at the
December meeting. I have submitted a grant to augment the salary for the summer intern. The Tech Wizards
grant proposal is moving forward. I am now in the process of working with the county schools on this
project. Youth Leadership day (officer training) is set for Dec. 27th at the Kickapoo Valley Reserve. The
Leader Retreat will be Saturday, February 2nd at Living Waters Bible Camp; both events are scheduled 10
a.m. to 2 p.m.
Next meeting will be on Wednesday December 12 at 7:00pm at the extension office. Bring snacks for after
the meeting. Heather Dregne made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Cordell Sagler. Meeting adjourned by
Vice-President Lee at 8:50 pm.
Respectfully submitted, Tammy Sherry, Secretary
Please Note Meeting Date/Time/Location Change:

Internship Opportunity with Project Y.E.S!
Project Y.E.S! is a Department of Defense funded
national internship program engaging college students
in service to meet the needs of military families.
Specifically, Project Y.E.S! expands the resources of
the Yellow Ribbon Program (YRP) and other youth &
teen oriented programs. Staff interns are provided an
opportunity to give back to their communities and
country through a year of service.
Through the partnership with the General H. Hugh
Shelton Leadership Center, interns are provided first-
class youth development educational and facilitation
skills. In turn, they travel the nation delivering youth
programs at Yellow Ribbon programs, summer camps,
leadership summits, and other family programs.
Project YES! also serves as a career development
program. Staff interns are provided dedicated mentors
who assist in the exploration and development of their
career goals and in the completion of a career
broadening learning project. This is all accomplished
while meeting the critical needs of communities with
high rates of families impacted by deployments and
other military related absences. Applications will be
accepted through Feb 28, 2013 and students will be
notified of the status of their application by April,
2013. More information and application materials can
be found at http://militaryfamilies.extension.org/yes-

contact JC Johnson at [email protected] or
919-513-3165 for further information.
