In a 2005 study, the American Camp Associa- tion found that summer camps provides several benefits for children who attended camp programs. These benefits included increased confidence and self-esteem, development or improvement of appropriate social skills, and increased willingness to try new things (Directions, 2005). In another study, the National Camp Evalu- ation Project evaluated the effectiveness of summer residential camping program for youth and young adults with disabilities. This research found that campers experienced significant growth in self-esteem, social inter - actions, and communication (Brannan, Arick, Fullerton, 1998). Additionally, research shows children thrive in an environment with caring adults. Children not only learn the skills necessary for healthy lifestyles but they learn about caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith. Additionally children, through their participa- tion at camp, have opportunities to gain a sense of achievement. A child who is gaining a heightened sense of self-worth and his or her place in the community is one who is more able to share, to assume responsibility, and to cooperate more effectively with others. This process may also include many opportunities for children to think and make decisions, and to assume responsibility for carrying out these decisions. In this context participation in camp cannot help but give a child a sense of competence and of confidence. teen adventure Camp Message from Ben GrubbsThe Teen Adventure Camp program has become a major highlight of Camp Silver Beach, offering freshman, sophomores and juniors a three-week experience, packed with loads of activities to make life-long friends. They have the unique opportunity to see the true beauty of the Eastern Shore along with their pristine beaches and ocean that surround it.

Combining elements of leadership training, community service and personal growth, teens help our community with service projects and learn the importance of giving back and helping others. They develop a self worth that paves the road for a more successful, meaningful and fulfilled life. This year we have many fun and inspiring things planned! Space is limited in this program, so get your application in soon and plan to join the fun!

meSSage frOm miShMy passion is summer camp and I am excited to see the summer of 2011 on the horizon. March 1st always brings excitement and drive as we prepare for the summer season. We are adding new things this year and continuing to improve the services we already offer.

This year we are adding a new video communication initiative to give our camper parents a unique insight into their campers experience at CSB. We will post personal, group and counselor videos each week telling the story of each camper’s experiences and everyday camp life.

I am also excited to be implementing an additional effort to spread the word about Project 212 throughout camp this summer. My intent is to involve everyone connected

to the camp experience. Watch closely for ways you can join our efforts!
