from the pastor

After a full, busy and strong start to the year it's good to get away for a few days of rest and recreation. Summer is such an important time. From those first days after the end of school, when the whole three months seemed so WIDE OPEN, to those days late in late August when we actually wanted to go back, the promise of summer calls to us the rest of the year. The water in the ocean is still chilly, but it's starting to get busier along by the

beach. We forget that every year June here is damp and grey, no matter what we think it should be. But the sun is going down late and coming up early - eventually the world will begin to warm up to its glow. Around the church our life and mission take slightly different forms. But it has been years since we could say that anything slowed down. The preschool begins summer school, and Kid Zone and Mid Zone camps are already up and running. We will serve something like a thousand children through them alone before September. Our junior and senior high are getting ready for their trips to the Sierra Service Project. They will be working in Susanville and Coarsegold, California, as well as in Tsaile, Arizona. We are fortunate to have so many eager, excited and growing youth taking part in such an important endeavor. We are fortunate to have the staff and volunteer leaders who are making it all possible. While our youth are coming and going, learning and growing, the rest of us will be treated to some of our favorite passages from scripture. During July I'll be following Matthew's gospel, as Jesus tells about the kingdom of God by using parables. He teaches his followers about God's grace as seeds growing among the weeds, and then shows them what abundance means by feeding 5,000 by the side of the sea. Doesn't that sound like summer? As we enjoy this special time of year, let us give thanks for the privilege of sharing it together. Whether you are here or there, coming and going over the next few weeks, know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I look forward to seeing you when you're in town, and to hearing about what you were up to when you are away. Grace and peace,

Father’s Day Hot Dog Brunch

We enjoyed a wonderful celebration of our Dads on Sunday, June 19th. We served hot dogs and potato salad and some good cheer to thank the special men in our lives for all they do for us throughout the year. Thank you to the following people for their generous and hard work in helping with this event: Tammy Scott, Allison Scott & Evan Zakman

VBC Volunteers Wanted!

Vacation Bible Camp is just 1 month away, August 1st through August 5h. It is a very large and popular program. Last year, we had almost 300 kids, and we expect a similar crowd this year. We need MANY volunteers to serve to make the program successful. We are especially looking for CREW LEADERS. These are volunteers who escort groups of 5-8 children from station to station during the program. No preparation is required other than to attend one training evening prior to VBC. The registration fee for children of people who volunteer all 5 days is free (a $20 per child supply donation is available). Contact Lisa Lehman at 377-6771 or [email protected] if you are interested or for more information.

3rd

Grade Bibles

We presented our 3rd Graders with their very own Bibles on Sunday, June 19th. Congratulations to those who received them! If your child was unable to attend, please let me know so I can still give them their Bible. Call me at 310-377-6771 or email me at [email protected] and we will coordinate getting that to you. Lisa Lehman, Director of Children’s Ministries

Family Ministries

Hollywood Bowl Here We Come! Join your friends for a lovely evening under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl. This year Family Ministries will be sponsoring two trips. On Saturday, July 16, multi-Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan makes her Hollywood Bowl debut. With over 40 million records sold, Sarah celebrates her recent release, Laws of Illusion, which highlights her dreamy ballads and lilting vocals. She will be accompanied by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Then on Saturday, August 20th, the whole family will enjoy the evening, as the Hollywood Bowl orchestra accompanies clips from Walt Disney's movie Fantasia. There will be all of the favorite scenes, plus some unfinished

segments of this Disney masterpiece. The evening ends with fireworks that complement the spectacular beauty of this cinematic triumph. Tickets are $32, and if you would like to take the bus from Wilson Park, it's an additional $5. You can sign up now at the Family Ministries Table on the patio, or email [email protected].

THE PURPOSEFUL READERS The Purposeful Readers will be discussing the book Love Wins: A Book about Heaven, Hell, and

the Fate of Every Person who Ever Lived, by Rob Bell, on July 17th at 6:30 PM in the Aldersgate Room. Here is what one reviewer had to say about the book: “I am not a student of the Bible, or a person with a deep understanding of theology. Like millions of others, I'm struggling with all of the questions that Rob Bell puts forth in the beginning of this book. While I search for answers that make sense, and look for a faith where I can belong and be strong, and not be lost and afraid, almost every page of this book spoke to me. I found it a compelling read, eye-opening and heart-opening. Yes, a little "over written" in the dramatic, one-sentence paragraph style. But it worked. When I finished this book, for the first time in decades, I wanted to pray. For the first time in years, I wanted to open a Bible and give it a chance. For the first time in a long time, I went to church because I felt there might be a good reason to go. So the debate can rage among the hard-cores, but I suspect this book can touch millions of hearts like it touched mine. For that reason, I will be recommending it to many friends who struggle with the same questions.” Basketball Update “There, I guess King George will be able to read that.”

- hypothetical response by John Hancock after signing the Declaration of Independence

Memorial Garden Memorial Garden Memorial Garden Memorial Garden WallWallWallWall EngravingsEngravingsEngravingsEngravings We are about to arrange for more engravings on the memorial wall. The engraving is done in gold and would bear the name and date of birth and death. The fee is $250 and a portion of that fee is placed in a maintenance fund for the upkeep of the garden. We are grateful to Club Maintenance folks and others who are helping to keep the garden plants flourishing and the fountain running clear. If you would like to place the name of a friend or family member on the wall, please contact Julie Geist in the church office.

Health & Wellness Save the date! August 28 BLOOD Drive

During summers the American Red Cross blood supply is reduced because of few High School drives. RHUMC is stepping up to the plate with a mini-blood drive on Sunday August 28 from 9 AM to 3 PM. All eligible persons are welcome to participate even if you have never donated blood before. Consistent donors of whole blood need to wait 56 days between donations and today marks the last day to donate before our drive. So please plan to share the gift of life at RHUMC on August 28.

1) There is no substitute for blood. 2) The blood supply here in So Cal is especially low in the summertime. 3) So Cal must import 40% of its blood supply from other parts of the country, from the South

and Midwest. 4) One unit of blood, separated into 3 components, plasma, platelets and packed cells can

potentially save 3 lives. Of course to save someone’s life is to be a hero

So—be a hero and contribute to our own community.
