Presidents Corner
I trust that you all got your electric blankets out of storage awhile ago and had them checked, before you started using them. The chimney was checked and cleaned,
towards the end of summer and with daylight savings, you changed your clocks and checked your smoke alarms. If you did all of these things plus so many more "preventable" actions towards fire prevention, I salute you. If you answered no to any of these questions, then like most people you are human. Complacency and a firm belief that "it will not happen to me" has been a response to my previous profession "fire-fighter" for over 40 years. But alas, the time for me has come for a change. I retired from the Fire Service recently and now run my own business, a mobile café" Check it out at cafe2u. However the past 40 years has not allowed me to not be interested in my previous passion, fire reductions and burns prevention and it is with concern that I heard on the radio the other day that fire fatalities are up 50% on last year. It was even more alarming to hear of a fatality, these last few days. Accidents ARE preventable; I know and have in the past proved such by education but when they do happen the consequences can be reduced.
The aim of your Board has always been to find a balance in our daily lives and to not "cotton wool" our communities. We shrived, succeeded and shall continue to focus on prevention through education and awareness, support for our survivors and their supporters and our commitment to improved treatment through the National Burn Centre. But we must all take the responsibilities of ourselves and each other. Stay focused on how you can prevent an accident and if one does happen to reduce the consequences by ones actions. There are heaps of good community groups out there all targeting "safe communities" of which Burn Support is but one. Please take the time, especially with winter now upon us, to reassess the way you do things. If you haven't already done so, get up now and test those smoke alarms. It may save you and or your family’s lives one day. Take the time to read this newsletter as there shall be some exciting announcements such as New Zealand's sending a burn survivor to an American Burn Camp soon, the race night at Alexander Park, upcoming telemarketing and off course our AGM in August. I wish you all a very safe winter and hope to see you at an upcoming event from Burn Support Group in the not too distant future.

This June we are very excited to be taking Jack Kelly a burn survivor to Camp Susquehanna in America, a burns camp for children. One of Burn Support Groups goals was to set up a camp exchange between ourselves and Camp Susquehanna. Carrie attended last year to get things in motion, and with this we have carefully chosen a reprehensive to attend. This is an amazing opportunity, and we are so pleased that Jack had accepted and are very confident that he will be an excellent Ambassador for the Burn Support Group. We will be blogging our trip on Facebook, so have a peak when you can and see Jack’s great adventure.
