CARNIVAL IN BRAZIL
Carnival is the most famous holiday in Brazil and it has become an event of huge proportions,
4.9 million people visited Rio de Janeiro’s carnival in 2011. Except for industrial production, the
country stops for almost a week and the festivities are night and day, mainly in coastal cities,
such as Sao Paulo, Recife, Salvador, Olinda and Puerto Segu
It is not just a time for fun but a highly competitive occasion. Groups from 1,500 to 4,000
people compete to see who can dance best and create the most original costumes. The dance
rhythm, participation and costumes vary from one region to another. H
are led by samba schools and every year each school chooses a theme for the procession,
usually connected to a current event or popular personality.
