News from 5A
5A have had an amazing start to the term! We have spent the last
couple of weeks learning the literacy circles roles and perfecting the discussion element of these reading activities. We have also been
focusing on inferring and summarising focus discussion, which will improve all students reading and comprehension abilities. Our
English learning wall is growing and all students enjoy having a reference point to go for reminders about learning. This is also
assisting students with their goals and knowing where they are at and what they are wanting to improve on. Over the next few weeks,
students will be writing a persuasive feature article about the flying
fox issue in the Calliope area. In Math, it’s been wonderful seeing the students ‘lightbulb moments’, particularly with multiplication and
long division. We are looking forward to seeing the amazing achievements 5A can accomplish this term with encouragement, a
positive attitude and hard work.

PRINCIPAL’S PIECE Chess Competition
What an exciting time of year to be part of the Calliope State School Chess Team! Our team is playing in Gladstone at CQU Marina Campus on Wednesday
against other Gladstone primary and high schools. The calibre of our players is outstanding and we wish them well.
Just a reminder of the times for Chess: Tuesday 1st break is beginner’s chess to learn the basics.
Wednesday 1st break is for students who know the basics and learn further
strategies.
Positive Problem Solving Conflict between children is a normal part of childhood development and
provides an opportunity for students to learn valuable real life skills around problem solving, valuing the perspectives of others, conflict resolution and
resilience. If your child talks to you about problems with other children at school, this is
good news. Very often children don’t tell anyone about issues they are having at school; they might feel ashamed or worried how their parents will respond. It
is important that when children approach parents with a problem, parents stop and listen. If parents become emotional or over-react, this may discourage
children from confiding further. When children are upset by other children’s behaviour, parents can provide a
valuable sounding board. They can help children interpret situations and decide
on possible strategies that are appropriate and fit with our school expectations of being Safe, Respectful and Responsible. Problems can be solved if the child
can stand up for themselves calmly. Parents can help children practise how to do this.
Parents might also help children learn how to ignore minor issues, strengthen friendships with kind children, resolve ongoing conflicts and get help from a
teacher when needed. At Calliope State School we encourage the strategy of Talk, Walk and Squawk.
If a child is unable to deal with a distressing issue by themselves, it is important that the parent communicates for the child. If the child is experiencing
problems at school, parents should first contact the classroom teacher. The next step in supporting your child would then be to contact the Deputy or
Principal for your child’s year level. Generally it is a risky move to approach parents of another child at school. Your
approach is unlikely to improve things and may result in heated conflict. This
may worsen the relationship between the children, making it more difficult for the school to resolve the issue. It is also not appropriate to approach the other
student yourself as this also often make situations more difficult to resolve peacefully.

Feedback We are always open to feedback as this helps our school to continuously grow
and improve. There are many appropriate ways to provide feedback to our
school and we appreciate the time and effort people have taken to ensure they are using these avenues. They include our surveys, participating in the P&C,
organising a meeting with the P&C representatives, attending the PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) meetings, organising a meeting through our office,
written communication via the school email addresses or a phone call.
WIN $1,000 FOR OUR SCHOOL P&C!
As you may remember, a student from our school
last year, Chayce Ind, won the Official Schoolwear
Scholarships for Dreams. This year, Official
Schoolwear are giving our P&C the opportunity to
win $1,000.
All you need to do is “like” the post about Chayce
at http://www.facebook.com/official.com.au. The
school with the most “likes” by Monday 11 March
at 3pm will win their P&C $1,000.
Rota-Kids
Rota-Kids will be holding a “Uniform Drive” this term. If you
have any uniforms sitting in the cupboard, please give them
to a worthy cause. Our goal is to collect 100 uniform
items. So far, we have:
17 Shirts
6 shorts / skirts
4 jumpers
Please drop any uniforms you can contribute to the school
office.
Kindest Regards, Rebecca Crapp A/Deputy Principal
Weekly Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
The PBL lesson for today is on ‘Play Areas’. It is important that student’s play in the correct area for a number of reasons. Firstly, it ensures students are playing
with kids in their own cohort, which maximises the opportunity for making friends. Secondly, it reduces the chances of accidents with bigger kids running around the
little ones. Thirdly, it enables teachers a better view when supervising students, knowing the boundaries of where kids need to be at all times.
At play time, students are provided with five areas. These include: eating area, play area, oval, hall and the library. Please reinforce these areas with your
child/children, and stress the importance of remaining in bounds at all times. Fantastic Fun Friday is fast approaching on Friday 8th March. Please encourage
your child/children to get their Stamp Charts in so they can be part of the fun.

Bikes, Scooters and Racks
A reminder that bikes, scooters and other wheeled transport means, are not to
be ridden in the school grounds. We ask that visitors to the grounds, including
younger children, do not bring bikes or scooters into the school grounds.
All bikes and scooters are to be stored in the bike racks, located near the pool
area and inside near the library. We encourage all students to put a lock on
their bikes and scooters to prevent theft and reduce the chance of these going
missing. Students are reminded to also wear their helmets.

Café Connect
A big thankyou to ‘Parents and Staff’ who braved the heat and
joined us for some fun alongside coffee, cake and conversation
on Thursday morning. It was lovely to see a couple of old faces
and to also meet and make new friendships! We were
priviledged to have Liz Cunningham with us and encourage us
with one of her inspiring stories. A big thankyou for ‘Lizzys
Country Bakehouse’ for our delicious cake!
Internal Food for thought – Do you see your cup as half full
or half empty? Do you see the best or worst in every
situation? Fear and faith, negative and positive
emotions/thoughts will always be present in life. Remember
if you focus on your fears, entertain them and give in to
them, they’ll increase. The way to overcome them is to
starve them. Don’t give them your time and energy. There
is so much to be grateful for! Are we a positive role model to
those around us. Can you see your cup as half full no matter
what you are going through?
Café Connect is held the 3rd Thursday of each month. Love
you to come and join us for our next one on Thursday 21st
March.

5 things…
5 things worth knowing about anxiety
Anxious kids get overwhelmed by their worries and don’t cope well with change.
But anxiety is something everyone can learn to manage. Here’s five things worth
knowing:
1. Anxiety floods our brains with chemicals that stop us thinking rationally. Don’t tell kids it’s going to be okay, instead get them to take a
deep breath. Do something else for a while and then come back to the problem.
2. Everyone gets anxious. It’s how our body warns us when we’re in danger.
3. Anxiety is based on thoughts, not all of them real or helpful. Point out faulty thinking that’s making kids worried. The more they see the
patterns, the less powerful the worries become.
4. Avoiding the cause of anxiety makes it worse. It’s natural to want to
protect kids, but help them to build up their tolerance and face the worries.
5. Routines helps keep anxiety at bay. They let us do things on autopilot, letting us save up our brave face for the real problems.
Anxiety is a part of life for everyone. Anxious kids just need more practice in
being able to live with their fears and see them in perspective. For more tips on
living and working with young people, visit tweens2teen.com
