Transcript of Calling - Issue 15 - (17 May 2012)
This week the students have been par cipa ng in the NAPLAN tes ng program. It has been a challenging week for the students
in Years 5, 7 and 9 but I do wish to commend them on the way they have approached the tests. I also wish to thank the staff
for their prepara on of the students. These tests are conducted for all students in Years 3,5,7 and 9 across Australia and the
results are reported on the My School website. The 2012 results will be published later this year.
This weekend is a big one for the Old Boys. On Friday night they are hos ng their ‘Legends’ night in the Waterford Building at
school, whilst the ‘Back to Shorncliffe’ day is being held at Curlew Park on Saturday. Both events will be a great chance for past
students to catch up. The Back to Shorncliffe Day is also a significant day for the current College Community. St Patrick’s
College will host St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace and St Edmund’s College in rugby and soccer and I encourage all
members of our College community to be at Curlew Park to support our rugby and soccer players. It should be a great day so
come along and make Curlew Park a ‘sea of green and gold’. Details of match mes etc may be found elsewhere in this edi on
of the Calling.
I men oned in last week’s Calling I will be absent for the next couple of weeks as I travel to Harvard University in the USA with
a group of other people from EREA. I am looking forward to the challenges involved with the study program at Harvard
University. It is my hope that the study program will give me insight into issues around performance management that I can
adapt back at St Patrick’s College. I return to Australia on June 8 and Mr David Gardiner will assume the role of Ac ng Principal
in my absence.
I ask the College Community to extend their prayers to Mr Bernie Haughey and family on the recent passing of Bernie’s mother. Mrs Joan Mary Haughey was the loving grandmother of Karl (Year 10), James (Year 8), Luke (Year 6) and Alexandra Haughey. As a Mum and Grandmother her uncondi onal love and core Gospel values will echo throughout the genera ons. Finally this week, I have spoken regularly with Mrs Ann Rebgetz, the Principal at St Columban’s College over the last week or so
as she and her school community grapple with the incident last week. I reminded Ann that the St Patrick’s College Community
is certainly thinking and praying for the St Columban’s community at this me. I also reiterated to Ann the powerful support of
a school community in mes of crisis and reiterated how the St Patrick’s College Band of Brothers united St Patrick’s College in
its me of crisis. Please keep the St Columban’s community in your thoughts and prayers.
Have a great week and make sure you wear your green and gold to Curlew Park this weekend.
God Bless
Dr Michael Carroll

CURRICULUM
Congratula ons to all students in Years 5,7 and 9 for the manner in which they approached this week’s NAPLAN Tests. Results of the tests will become available to us by September. I would especially like to acknowledge the support of Mrs Gibb and the Learning Support team for their organisa on of the students who received special provision. As we move through the term, a number of assignments are due. One ques on which is o en asked is to do with the tutoring of students. How much assistance should students receive from outside sources? Assignments are a valuable tool in discrimina ng student abili es, especially in the older grades. In fairness to all boys, what we receive at school needs to be a reflec on of the student’s capabili es. By accep ng a high level of assistance, the final product may be something that a student isn’t capable of producing on his own. In the case of Year 12, students must be placed in a rank order at the end of the year. Where a student sits in this rank order has a significant and direct effect on his final OP score. The more students your son is ahead of, the more likely he will receive a stronger OP. If other students sit higher in this rank order, not as result of ability, but as a result of outside help, then those who did their own work, but are lower in the rank order will be affected nega vely. As a College we are not opposed to the boys receiving extra help with schoolwork. We offer tutoring here at the College. We provide support at study group every Monday and Thursday. To discuss work with someone from outside the school, or to have someone clarify an issue or assist in the development of skills can be very beneficial. Our concern is not tutoring, rather the nature and extent of the tutoring. Receiving help with basic skills is vastly different from taking an assignment to a tutor and asking him to complete it with you or for you. It is reasonable for Teachers and Heads of Curriculum to expect that there is a correla on between class perfor-mance, exam performance and assignment results. It does concern us when the quality of work in an assignment is far in ad-vance of the student’s exam results or far more sophis cated than anything a student has provided for class or homework. Situa ons such as these raise ques ons as to whether we can accept assignments which fall into this category. Accep ng support in the right spirit is the fairest and most beneficial course of ac on in the long term.

STUDENTS
I would like to thank all the parents who a ended our parent educa on evening last week. It was great to see over 140 parents
in a endance and hopefully they gained an insight in the life of an adolescent and walked away with some strategies to survive
this me period. The evening provided some theore cal background and also some prac cal ps when dealing with
adolescents. I will over the next few weeks provide some informa on from Paul Gibney from the two informa on sessions in
the Calling. Thank you to the Parents and Friends Associa on for their support for these programs. We are planning now for
our Parent Educa on program for 2013, so if there are topics or speakers that interest you, please email me the details or
topics of interest.
Hair Week: I ask that you have the following conversa on over the dinner table. This week is half way through the term and is
generally known as “HAIR WEEK”. I ask that you check your son’s hair and if required, make the necessary arrangements to
have their hair cut to meet the College guidelines before the start of next week. I remind all students that their hair needs to
be combed in a style that is appropriate for school. The “shaggy” look is not part of the Hair and Grooming policy at St
Patrick’s College.
Year 9 Camp and Retreat Program– All Year 9 students have a five day program for next week specific to their House. The
program is outlined below. It is important that all students a end the five days of ac vi es unless they have a medical
cer ficate. Students will be able to wear their sports uniform for the Retreat. An academic program has been organised for
those House groups that are a ending school on their specific days. Students must wear full school uniform on the days that
they a end school.
LOST PROPERTY: There is a large amount of lost property that is picked up at the end of each day. Mrs Sandra Fowlie is able to
return a certain amount of the items collected because it is named or labelled. However, a large amount cannot be returned
because no name is found on the items. It is requested that all families please take the me to label your son’s clothing with a
permanent marker. At the end of the term any lost property that is not claimed and not named will be either returned to the
Uniform Shop to be resold or will be given to St Vincent de Paul.

Inter ‐ House Theatresport Compe on Our first ever compe on has been a resounding success with all Houses providing teams which have competed with a great amount of skill and energy. Both of the preliminary rounds were well supported with a ‘full house’ of enthusias c fans cheering each performance. Teams were very evenly matched with only a few points separa ng all teams, so close in fact we could not split the two teams vying for the final place in the finals. As a result this Friday’s grand final will feature the following five houses; COFFEY, MOONEY, KENNEDY, O’ROURKE AND RICE. The final will be staged in the Waterford Building Drama Suite commencing at 1:20pm Friday. Spectators are welcome.
Inter– School Theatresport Compe on Theatresports is an ac vity ideally suited to those with good looks, charm and rat-cunning. Mee ng at least two of those three criteria, our senior team ‘The Monkey Ducklings’ entered the fray on Tuesday 15th of May on home turf in the heats of the Brisbane Youth Theatresports compe on. Brilliantly bolstered by the presence of a large propor on of our Paddy’s Ba alion to cheer them on in their games (plus a special appearance from Green and Gold Man!), the team established within the first few seconds of gameplay why SPC is a force to be reckoned with statewide. The team faced tough compe on from fellow north side teams from Grace Lutheran College, Southern Cross Catholic College, Mount Alvernia and in par cular, St John’s College from Nambour. As always, only two teams from a heat can be put through to the next round, and a er a flawless evening of well-structured narra ves, high-octane performances and actual wi y humour, we succeeded in smashing the compe on to come first and progress to the semi-finals. The team cannot be complimented merely on technique, however; they are to be complimented on their graciousness and sportsmanship in being the first to congratulate and encourage other teams who competed, and for showing kind support to some of the younger teams for whom this was their first ever compe on night. The boys were excellent ambassadors for the school and their conduct and fair play could be the envy of all other ac vi es that we par cipate in as a school.
CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
St Patrick’s Defeats Marist College! Yes, that’s right. Our Firsts deba ng have scored a stunning (albeit narrow) victory over the young men from Ashgrove. If you needed further proof that deba ng is the red-hot cket for co-curricular events, this could well be it. In a short prepara on debate, that saw our men on the much tougher nega ve side of ‘The media should be banned from specu-la ng about the guilt or innocence of people involved in serious crimes’, our Firsts fought hard to notch up their exci ng victory. However, the excitement didn’t stop there. Our Year 10 Team 2, coached by super-coach Wa s (who also dab-bles as an excellent Chairperson when he isn’t coaching), have again annihilated their opposi on with a five point victory (well done Johan Baines, Louis Emery and Lachlan Munro). This is a white-wash in deba ng terms. This machine team are undefeated and as such have already qualified for the finals rounds – you won’t want to miss seeing them in ac on. Year 10 Team 1, coached by the slightly nervous Ms Hewi , also had a comprehensive victory. The nights may well be ge ng chilly out at Genesis Chris an College where our Year 10’s compete, but they are certainly keeping things hot. Be sure to put next round’s debates in your diary so that you can be part of the ac on. Next week (note – Thursday debates so that we can all watch State of Origin) at St Pauls, Strathpine Year 8 Team 1 (Ms Georgakis and Mr Seers) at 7:00pm Year 8 Team 2 (Ms Gibb) at 7.45pm 30 May at Bracken Ridge State High School Year 9 Team 1 (Ms Newman) at 7.00pm Year 9 Team 2 (Mr Merre ) at 7.00pm Year 11 (Dr Owens) at 7.00pm
