Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family We have reached the serious section of the semester with the students facing significant assessment across all of their subjects. It is vitally important that studies take absolute importance over the remaining two weeks of the school semester. Please ensure your son is aware of the requirements of the Assignment Policy as outlined in the Student Diary and has a clear plan of when his exams are to be held. Being well prepared will help our students perform their best. Semester reports will be compiled during the upcoming Staff Week and sent home during the holidays.

Last Sunday we celebrated the feast of Pentecost and this year it also marks the beginning of the Year of Grace. This Year of Grace, marking the 50th anniversary of the opening of Vatican II and following on from Sydney WYD08 and the canonisation of Mary MacKillop, seeks to build on the energy and spirit within the Australian Church. During staff prayer this week, I reflected on the faces of Jesus and what is important in our lives. In the next 12 months we all are invited to refocus our lives on that of Jesus Christ and the examples he has provided us with.

It is always great to receive news of the positive actions involving our young men. The following is an extract from a letter sent to Dr Carroll this week: “On Saturday morning, 12th May, whilst mowing the lawn in preparation for the 'Mothers Day' rush, the following day, I somehow managed to lose my 'manbag' whilst removing a brush cutter from the rear seat of the vehicle. The bag contained a mo-bile phone, glasses, keys - thankfully not the vehicle keys, and my wallet. The wallet housed approximately $30 dollars and some change, three debit cards, my drivers and firearm licences, medicare and health insurance cards, blue card, and various other important cards/papers. You can appreciate the anxious state in which I found myself. I had a phone call the next morning to advise that the bag had indeed been handed in to a nearby shop. Nothing was missing from the bag - everything was intact. After enquiring as to who returned the bag, I was informed the young man's name is Zac Johnson. I realise how extremely lucky I am to have had the bag, and all of the con-tents returned, all as a result of the honesty of this young man. Zac is indeed a fine representative of the school. “It is very important to remember that our actions often can have significant ramifications and Zac’s honest actions certainly left a wonderful impression on this member of our local community.

The Year 9 cohort participated in their Camp and Retreat program last week. Fourteen staff volunteered their time to allow the camp to operate. I very much appreciate their generous time and effort as it is significant to be away from work and family for three days. The Year 9 Camp is significant as it culminates our sequential Camp program at the College. The program develops skills, team work, stronger relationships and greater resilience. The Camp program plays a vital role in our holistic education of our young men.

Our CIC Cross Country runners compete this Friday at the annual CIC Cross Country Championships. They have been training very well for months now under the direction of their coaches and I know they are well prepared for the major races of their season. I look forward to providing positive news of their achievements in next week’s Calling.

I n between camps last week the Year 9’s also took part in the Emmaus Retreat focusing on people in their lives

who are Emmaus people. The retreat is based on the read-ing in the gospel of Luke when two men are walking to the town of Emmaus just outside of Jerusalem. The two men are talking of the events of the last three days since Jesus had been crucified and of the news they had just heard that the body of Jesus was missing from his tomb. As the men talk a stranger approaches them wondering what they are discussing. The two men eventually break bread with the stranger as he discusses the scriptures with them. After the stranger leaves the two men suddenly realise that they were in the presence of Christ. The men say “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”. Jesus had hidden his face to the men but when he left they realised they had been in the presence of someone special their hearts burned with passion and love as they had seen the face of Jesus. This is the focus of our retreat with the boys, getting them to understand who the people are in our lives that make our hearts burn. The people who show us unconditional love, the people who guide us, the people we admire are all faces of Jesus that appear to us in our lives to guide us through the good and bad times. Last week in his Calling article Matthew Hawkins wrote about the beauty and perfection that is his daughter Rosie. The birth of a young girl like Rosie shows the Face of Jesus, to Matthew, Julie, Claudia and Charlie. The miracle of Rosie is something that made their hearts truly burn with unconditional love. When we love and are loved unconditionally we see people as they truly are as perfect. One of the very interesting aspects of the retreat is an obstacle course the boys must follow. In groups of five one boy must lead boys who are bound together and blind folded through a long and at times tricky course. This is always an interesting activity to watch as the boys fall over each other at the start but the best part of the activity is seeing the boys learn to navigate the course through the guidance of their leader. This is much like life, sometimes we take our Faces of Jesus for granted and are not open to listening when they say things or do not embrace their ad-vice. I can say honestly that sometimes as sons or daugh-ters we never show enough appreciation for the Faces of Jesus in our lives that have guided since our first breath, our Mums and Dads. The boys were left with the challenge to tell their parents they loved them for being a Face of Jesus in their lives. While many of the boys may have identified the fact their parents were a face of Jesus in their lives I think it is often hard for people like me who do not have children to understand that in the eyes of our parents we to are a Face of Jesus. In their eyes we are perfect and they show us this every day with their unconditional love and support.

We left the Year 9’s with the challenge to acknowledge those people in their lives who were a face of Jesus and I think this is something we all need to be challenged to do. Let’s all challenge ourselves over the next week to pick up the phone, write a letter or just even tell someone who is a Face of Jesus in our lives how much they mean to us. Let’s all take time out for those people who make our hearts burn.

Intensive Revision Students are now moving into a critical phase of assessment preparation in Mathematics. Students should be “intensively revising” between now and the end of term examination. A focused and concerted period of intensive revision is critical to complement the daily homework routine and continuous revision processes that should have been occurring through-out the term. What is Intensive Revision? Intensive Revision involves students sitting for periods of time from 20-60 minutes and focusing on reviewing the material they have studied throughout the term. This will involve reworking questions from the terms work, using text exercises, chapter reviews or other revision worksheets from the term, or accessing web based resources such as Mathsonline. It is also important that students methodically check the unit overview and/or term planner to guide their time spent revising so that they are covering all concepts before the exam. This type of revision should occur regularly from now up until the exam date. Class teachers will guide your son throughout this process. If your son is unsure of where to start, please ensure they seek assistance from the teacher. Effective exam preparation is a critical factor in ensuring the effort and application put in by our student’s results in a performance in the exam that they can be satisfied with. The Sacraments and Year 8F What an exciting term for Religion! In my class we have been investigating other Religious Traditions and in particular com-ing to an understanding of Beliefs, Sacraments and Traditions. In line with trying to engage the students in the learning pro-cess, they have taken control of what it is that they want to investigate and I have tried to provide them with areas where information can be found. Boys are very hands on in relation to learning and remember-ing and so, with this in mind, I took my class to the Chapel and introduced them to the different components of the Mass and the focus was on the instruments that Father used in the Rite of Communion. The students were amazed probably because they had never been at such close proximity to the Altar. They learnt about the purifiers, corporals, curates, chalice, saborians, tabernacle, and the wafers. What they were intrigued with was the mark-ing on the wafer which is placed into the wine. Now they un-derstand why the Host and Wine and is both the Body and Blood of Christ. Our second learning experience was the participation of a re-enactment of Baptism. Many of the students brought their Baptismal outfits to class: - their clothes, candles, certificates and then the big moment arrived! Brodie was the candidate for Baptism and Hamish and Sam were his Parents and God Parents. As a class, we celebrated the re-enactment of Baptism, renewing our own Baptismal Promises and praying for Brodie as a new member to the community. In keeping with the Ritual of Celebration we came together and shared a Baptism Breakfast. Hamish’s mum provided little cupcakes that read out Brodie’s Baptism with the date and year. Other members of the class also contributed food and together we welcomed another member into our family. (Re-enactment only). The unit draws to a conclusion with their presentations of different Religious Traditions of their choice using Prezi, a new program we have learnt this term.

Year 11 and 12 Student Term Exit Procedure On Wednesday 6 June students in Years 11 and 12 will be involved in an end of Semester exit process. The process will involve students being signed off by the Academic and Pas-toral areas of the College. Year 12 students will meet with their House Deans during Period 5 and once they have been processed are able to leave school to commence their block exams. Year 11 students will follow the same process during period 7. If a student has not fulfilled his Academic or Pastoral commitments he will be required to stay at school until all those commitments have been fulfilled during exam block. All students must have their parents/guardians sign the forms. Block Exams All students in Years 11 and 12 receive block exam privileges. Students in these year levels only come to school when they have exams. While at home it is important to utilise this time productively for exam preparation. When attending school for exams it is important that students do not leave the grounds of the College for any reason. IPods and Mobile phone are not permitted to be used on the school grounds. Uniform The College uniform is to be worn correctly from the time students leave home until they return home in the after-noon. This is important to maintain the positive public image of St Patrick’s students to wider community. This includes shirts tucked in, socks pulled up and ties being worn correctly. Students in Years 10-12 must wear their blazers to and from school each day during Term 2 and 3. All students have been made aware of the College’s expectation on this.

Mobile Phones We understand the need for many students to have a phone, particularly for communication purposes. St Patrick’s has a policy of taking a student’s phone if it is seen or heard during school hours. This aims to minimize the inappropriate use of mobile phones at school. The Mobile Phone Policy is clearly outlined in the College Diary. I encourage all parents to read the policy and to support the College in maintaining a good teaching and learning environment. Contacting Your Son If you need to get messages to your son or collect your son from school during the day please note that the only times the Student Office can make PA announcements to contact boys is at AM Tutor Group (8.28 am), morning tea (10.25 am), the beginning of Year 5-8 lunch (12.25 pm) and PM tutor group (2.50 pm). Also, if you need to collect your son for an appointment, please ensure that a note is in his diary regard-ing the appointment and that he knows to leave class at the appropriate time as we are not able to call over the PA other than the times listed above. Social The last social for the year will be held on Saturday 14 July at PCYC for Year 8, 9, and 10 students. Parents are needed to assist with the running of the social. Training will commence in week 1 of term three (CIC) and week 3 of term three (AIC). If boys have signed on to play they are expected to attend all training sessions and games or communicate any difficulties with their respective coaches. It is not acceptable to simply fail to show up to training or games without prior notification; boys are to make every effort to fulfill their basketball responsibilities.

SPC BASKETBALL UNIFORM

TRAINING All boys are required to wear their college P.E. uniform or Basketball uniform, at no stage are boys allowed to wear other club singlet’s, NBA singlet’s, rugby jersey’s etc. If boys are found wearing the incorrect uniform they will be asked to sit out of training which may affect selection chances. If boys are continually found wearing the wrong uniform they may lose the opportunity to represent the college in basketball, I ask for all parents support with this matter. GAMES Boys are permitted to wear the college P.E. uniform during the initial trials but all boys are required to have a college basketball singlet by round one. Boys are permitted to wear college P.E. shorts during games so long as all pockets have zips. SPC basketball shorts are available for purchase from the uniform shop if desired. SPECTATORS For all boys who wish to stay around and spectate after their respective game, full college formal uniform is to be worn, you will be not be permitted to stay unless you meet this requirement.

NORTH SIDE WIZARDS BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION

During the final week of school a representative from North Side Wizards Basketball Association will be holding development clinics for all boys in the junior school interested in basketball. It is expected that any boy in years 5, 6, and 7 who have signed on plus any other boys who may be interested in playing attend. The sessions are FREE and will be run during junior lunch. Boys are required to wear their P.E. uniform, the dates are as follows:

Tuesday 12th June: Year 5 and 6, Junior Lunch, Front Courts.

Thursday 14th June: Year 7, Junior Lunch,

Front Courts.

These sessions will be an excellent way to begin to focus on next terms sport and also learn some valuable tips; I strongly encourage all boys in the junior school to attend!

SPORT SUPPORT GROUP

The June Monthly Meeting of this Group will take place on this Monday 4 June in the Board Room of Morven Building from 6.00pm till approximately 7.15pm. All parents are welcome to attend, especially those whose sons are involved in Basket Ball, Cross Country, Rugby League, and Tennis.



With the support of St.George Bank, Queensland Rugby will be running a junior rugby coaching clinic for players aged six to 12 years-old at Ballymore Stadium this July as part of a growing connection between the Queensland rugby communities. The clinic aims to help young rugby enthusiasts increase their skills by undergoing a variety of fun rugby-based drills under the guidance of Queensland Rugby’s finest coaches and players. The clinic will be run over two days as follows:

There are limited places available, so make sure the kids register as soon as possible to ensure a spot and a chance to meet their favourite Reds players. We will also be running clinics on the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and at Darling Downs over the holiday period. Congratulations to MOONEY HOUSE!! Winners of the inaugural Inter-House Theatresports Challenge. The final was a very close tussle with all teams separated by just a few points with some very entertaining routines performed throughout the day. Once again the spectator gallery was full with all present enjoying a good laugh. We are looking forward to this challenge becoming a permanent fixture on the St Pat’s calendar.

CHESS

The AIC chess team has a had a tough year to date. At the start of the season I predicted this year would be a “building” year, especially amongst the Junior Teams. Seven out of the twelve junior players are new to the AIC chess team. Each player has strengths and weaknesses, however, it would seem experience amongst the players is lacking. It is hard to compete at the highest level year by year especially when other AIC schools are always trying to implement ways of doing things differently and improve results. Our chess results to date have not been as good as previous years, however, we have learnt a lot and will be better for it next year! It is extremely important that each boy continues to develop their own skills and practice as much as possible. Last week against Iona was a great result for St Pat’s. All teams had a win. This includes our Junior B team who won through forfeit (a wins a win!). The forfeit aside, the win against Iona was deserving. The majority of the boys have been training well and have committed a lot of time and effort into the chess program. I would like to use this opportunity to congratulate the open teams who are placed 3rd and 2nd. These boys have been a part of the chess program for a large number of years and their success can be contributed to the effort they have put in. DEBATING

Double the debating action this week (I know, even we are struggling with the additional excitement and adrenalin). As a sport that evokes such competition and rivalry, it’s not sur-prising that debaters are also committed sport watchers – so our Year 8’s debated last Thursday evening to allow them to support the Maroons in their victory. Our Team 1, coached by Ms Georgakis and Mr Seers, had a stunning 1 point victory over Bribie Island State High School. Bribie Island have proved fiercely competitive this year, but with Cillian McDonald’s excellent preparation (and Irish charm) he set his team off on a debate that could only see them achieve victory. Unfortunately our Team 2, coached by Mrs Gibb, were narrowly defeated. A tough topic though, ‘That our sport’s stars are paid too much’….our debaters could never be paid enough for the incredible action that they provide!

Our Year 9 teams kicked off the final round last night. Unfor-tunately both teams went down in narrow, 1 point losses in arguing that we shouldn’t ban sports involving animals. Team 1, coached by Mrs Newman, have shown remarkable debating skill this year. Their losses have only come against some very impressive opposition. It was exciting to sit alongside the non-debating team members last night as they supported their 3 speakers in action. The result could have gone either way, so we were thankful for a speedy, though well-considered, adjudication. Sadly the adjudicator mustn’t have been as convinced as the rest of us

by Matthew Weekes’s parting words ‘When you look into the eyes of a puppy, no one can resist a pat…or to play sport with them’. Next year will surely only bring even more enthusiasm and excitement from this team.

Word continues to spread about the might of our Year 11 team, with the young men again finding themselves without an opposition. We await news of their speedy entry into the final’s rounds.

B.I.S. COMPETITION Another great night of the B.I.S. competition occurred on Tuesday 22 May. We hosted Marist College here at St Patricks and there were competitions in chess, public speaking and debating. St Patricks were the affirmative debating team, arguing that, “single sex schools are better than coeducational schools”. The three boys on the debating team, Sam Essex, Nicholas Harrington and Ethan Harvey all had strong arguments and spoke well. B.I.S Chess I think we had the most boys ever (26) to play chess. Judging from the noise, the boys had a good time and thoroughly enjoyed the supper put on by Satori Organics (Lindy Goodall). Public Speaking Competing against Marist Ashgrove each of the following students, Lochlan Black, Jarvis Pyne and Callum Maclean (pictured), in one room with Brayden West, Tom Kelman and Nick Gecks-Preston speaking in another, gave great speeches using some good speaking techniques.
