Callie Coles
I began my journey into architecture when my family lost our home to a fire in 2008. In the course of rebuilding our house, my family learned a great deal about the meaning of home. It was during this experience that I realized that I needed to pursue a future in architecture and meaningful space. The University of Oregon was the obvious choice for my education in architecture. There I experienced a rich education in sustainable, meaningful, and thoughtful design. After graduation, I worked as a public servant for the City and County of San Francisco. I am proud to say that I made contributions to public architecture that improved and beautified San Francisco.

Located in Tuolumne County, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s Moccasin Yard supports the power house and Hetch Hetchy water system. Building #76 will house 3 separate break rooms, maintenance shops, and offices. The building is designed to adapt to a changing program and features movable and flexible partitions. Moccasin Yard building #76 went in front of the Civic Design Review Committee on May 18th, 2015 and received Phase II approval.
The design was lead by Karyn Shore, AIA. The digital model for this project was created in Sketchup, and the elevations are a combination of Sketchup, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

A nucleus of play for both children and adults alike, the Kimbell Playground features an updated landscape, spacious turf fields, and on site bathroom facilities. Security concerns prompted the addition of gates to enclose the covered portions of the building on the site.
The project design was led by myself, under the supervision of Will Kwan and Karyn Shore.

This project was designed as part of the Oregon BILDS program, which aims to connect students to design-build housing in the local Eugene area. The site selected in Winter of 2013 was suitable for 4 units. This house was proposed for the south-east unit on the lot. The house itself has 3 bedrooms, one and a half baths, and around 1400 square feet. Designed for a family, but small enough to remain energy efficient, this house is the perfect compromise for eco-friendly families in Eugene.

The housing situation in San Francisco is in dire need of assistance. Public housing built in the 40s and 50s is now reaching the end of its lifespan, and is requiring new life. This project is a proposal to demolish the Westside Courts in the Lower Pacific Heights, and create new housing that provides safer and more family friendly dwellings to families in need. Townhomes and accessible flats enclose a large courtyard that provides play space for the residents as well as for the children of the Headstart program that resides on the 1st floor.
The digital model for this project was created in Sketchup, and the images are a combination of Sketchup, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

There are currently 136 units on the site, which is 2.6
acres. There are approximately 225
residents.
Within a quarter-mile buffer of the project site, there were two auto repair shops, five banks or credit unions, four beauty/barber shops, one bike shop, two dry cleaners, 26 eating establishments, six gyms, two hardware stores and 12 pharmacies.

Westside Courts is a housing complex designed to replace aging and dated public housing in the Western Addition of San Francisco. Four courtyards create micro communities within the larger complex, and a public mews allows for neighbors to connect and access resources. A Head Start provides child care for single parents, and a GED program aims to increase literacy and help residents acquire the degrees and skills needed in a post-recession economy. Transitional zones
create private spaces for families, and secure courtyards give kids a safe place to play, learn, and grow.

The University of Oregon has ambitious plans for the future of her campus. Mixed-use buildings allow the integration of interdisciplinary functions, and support students in the all emcompassing quest for education. This project is host to over 200,000 sq feet of space, including a large lecture hall, classrooms, offices for professors and graduate students, a dining hall, dorm rooms, and common areas for community interactions. This project was designed in conjuction with campus architect, Chris Ramey.
The digital model for this project was created in Revit, and the images are a combination of Revit, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

Food is more than only something to eat. Food is excitement, food is passion, food is life. It Is texture and culture and emotion, all on a plate or in a bowl. Portland’s food culture is centered around food carts, the ultimate mobile food expression. There are food carts representative of every culture around the globe, conveniently located in empty lots around the city. Each food cart has a unique geometry and unique relationship to the Carts and infrastructure that srround it. In the Portland Regional Culinary Institute, each room becomes its own unique geometry, with its own color language and vocabulary. The color and passion of food reverberates throughout the building. The rooms wrap around the airy atrium that pulls light down from the Portland sky. It is in this atrium that culinary students from all backgrounds come together to create something meaningful.

The YMCA is a place for encouraging community strength and trust, providing a safe place for youth to learn and Grow, and supporting both youth and adults in the pursuit of wellness. Their facilities must enable and embrace their mission. The new YMCA will embrace a non-religious sprituality, centered around health and wellness. This project was designed in conjunction with the director and co-director of the Eugene YMCA, which was both fufilling and informative.
The images of this project were drawn by hand in ink and colored digitally in Photoshop, with some site detailed added in Illustrator.

Zenith Bathhouse
Nestled in Distric One is historic Saigon, Zenith is the perfect retreat from the busy streets and marketplaces. It features nu-merous warm baths and theryapy rooms to relax the body and open the soul to new heights. Grab a refreshing drink at the cafe while you acclimate to your surrounds, then descend into the warm depths of the baths to explore everything you though you knew about your self. The city of Vicenza is deeply rooted in architectural history. As the home of Andrea Palladio, Vicenza hosts numerous Palladio buildings, the most noteworthy being the Basilica Palladiana. A meeting space and exhibition hall for the entire city, the Basilica is the heart of the entire community. Currently, an outdated and unattractive building sits next to the Basilica, helping to shape the piazzas that surround it. The Palazzo della Communita is a proposal to replace that building with a new companion to the Basilica; one that is sensitive to the history of the region, but responsive to the new needs of modern society.
The digital model for this project was created in Revit, and the images are a combination of Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator, and hand drawn with pencil.

Hand Sketches
My study abroad trip to Europe had many components, but the main one was pencil sketching. We spent anywhere from two to four hours a day sketching at various sites around Italy and Switzerland. We drew perspectives, elevations, sections, and axonometrics. I consider myself to be proficient at sketching while on site, a skill lost on many architecture students today. Sketching can help you capture the essence of a place while allowing you to open your eyes to new details and relationships that you may not have otherwise seen.
