“Embracing Spiritual Awareness” Is Underway The new course of study for

the Parlor Class got underway this past Sunday. The group viewed the first presentation by Diana Butler Bass, plus the responses from members of the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Alexandria, Virginia who were part of the Response Group with discussion leader, Tim Scorer, when they were taped in March, 2013. Ms. Bass made a number of interesting points in her first presentation, including this statistical data about the current state of religion in America. She informed us that 36% of young adults, i.e. persons 40 and under describe themselves as unaffiliated with any religious body. Another 40% of the population are either part of religiously diverse groups--Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus, for example, or of racially diverse groups--Hispanics, Asians, African-Americans, Indians, i.e. from India and the Middle East. The remaining 26% of the population, historically white, are either Catholic or Protestant. Fifty years ago, these statistics were very different with the percentage of white Catholics and Protestants much higher than is the case. This is but one of many paradigm shifts we’ll be considering in this course of study. On April 19, using the Student’s Book which has many direct quotes from the presentations by Ms. Bass, we will discuss what we heard about the state of religion in America. We have two more Student’s Books, so we’d welcome you as a participant. Will you consider joining us this Sunday, April 19 at 9 A.M. in Chapman Lounge? We’d love to have those unclaimed Student’s Books put to use. FYI, giving two weeks to each of the five topics in this study, we project concluding this course of study on Sunday, June 14. The Parlor Class, Ed Linberg, Facilitator

General Assembly is Coming The 2015 General

Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is set for July 18-22 in Columbus, OH and planning is well underway. If you've been before, you’ll find a bounty of new worship experiences and learning tracks. If you’ve never been, there is a website with a wealth of information, including a page just for you. Go to ga.disciples.org to see the schedule, workshop offerings and register online. Registration Forms Are Available If you’d like to register for the 2nd Annual Senior Adult Retreat of the Pacific Southwest Region, set for May 19-20 at Loch Leven, you may pick up a registration form from the counter in the Church Office. The registration form gives all of the details about this event as regards time, place and cost involved. What it doesn’t tell you is that the keynote speaker will be Doug Edwards from the be.group, formerly known as Presbyterian Homes of Southern California. He will address what it means for Seniors to live in the “third-half of life.” What it also doesn’t tell you is that John Towey, a fine actor from First Christian Church, North Hollywood, will entertain those attending this event with his one-man show, “Travels With Charley,” based on John Steinbeck’s book. Something very important it does tell you is that this event will be held in the newly refurbished Campbell Lodge at Loch Leven, a project that was completed last fall after decades of dreaming about it. For more information about this retreat speak to Ed Linberg who is coordinating it for the Older Adult Ministry Committee of the PSW Region.

Bread for the World This May, our Congregation will be participating in the annual

Offering of Letters through Bread for the World. This year’s theme is “Feed Our Children,” and focuses on closing the hunger gap in the United States, where 1 in 5 children live at risk for hunger. Every 5 years, Congress must review and reauthorize children’s nutrition programs, and these programs are up for review in 2015. This year, we are asking members of our church to write personalized letters to Congress about anti-hunger legislation and policies which impact children. While in today’s digital age, it may seem old-fashioned to write personalized, hand-written letters, by doing so you are communicating with your representative that these are issues about which you, their constituent, are passionate. Virtually all Capital Hill Staff surveyed (96%) reported that if their Member of Congress has not reached a firm decision on how to vote regarding an issue, personalized letters from their constituents will strongly influence the Member’s position. Why is this important? Of 21.5 million low-income children who receive a subsidized school lunch, slightly over half receive breakfast. Only 1 in 7 of these children will receive subsidized meals this summer. Children are most at risk for hunger during the summer and school breaks. This lack of nutritious meals significantly contributes to a child’s ability to learn and grow. As Christians, we are called to act in a way to ensure that all of our children are nourished and fed. As Matthew 18:5 states, “Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.” How to get involved Cambria Findley-Grubb is heading up the Offering of Letters this year. She can be contacted with questions at [email protected]. She will be contacting Small Group leaders this week about visiting their groups regarding the Offering of Letters. More information will be included in next week’s Caller about ways for the general Church to get involved.

O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth.”[Psalm 96:1] I have always felt that the best time for us to make some changes for the better was

during the interim ministry. As I always say, ‘We can always blame it on the Interim Pastor!” We need to look at those portions of our worship order which reflect antiquated forms of worship. Why do we still use them? What do they really mean for new people coming into our worship experience? I have worked in churches which updated the words to the Lord’s Prayer and Doxology and completely eliminated the Gloria Patri. Others have illuminated the Lord’s Prayer. One of my churches did not take an offering during worship. They used offering boxes as they entered the Sanctuary. So where do you put the Doxology? Congregations chose to make these changes because the archaic language is hardly understood by people not brought up in a home with the tradition of attending worship. Is tradition the only reason we keep these formal responses in our worship? Pastor Dale has asked us to consider a different, more inclusive, wording for the Doxology. The new words hit the mark without the need for euphemisms for “father, son and holy ghost.” I sincerely hope everyone responds to this change with grace and understanding. Expecting visitors to adapt to archaic traditions will not allow us to be inviting to new members to our congregation. As Easter People, let’s be looking forward to new life in Christ! The Worship Ministry Team would appreciate your feelings about this change in our worship as well as any other thoughts you would like to share. I hope God leads you to greater inspiration in worship on Sunday. See you in church! In love, Bob Hasty, Worship Team Chair

Volunteering is Good for your health It's one of the first lessons we learn as children -- "sharing means caring." We might not understand why we have to share at first, especially when there are younger siblings involved, but as we grow into adulthood, sharing becomes an essential part of your social and career success. So does it come as a surprise to learn that research now proves that sharing your time with others for a good cause can improve your overall happiness and mental well-being? It turns out that Baby Boomers give more total dollars to charities than any other generation. According to Forbes, Boomers are

responsible for 34 percent of all charitable donations, which amounts to nearly $61.9 billion every year. And according to the data collected by Volunteering In America, Boomers spent about 3.6 million hours volunteering for organizations or causes they are passionate about. These generous Boomers seem to have tapped into volunteerism at an opportune time; two new studies have recently confirmed that there are significant health benefits to giving back. UnitedHealth Group commissioned a national survey of 3,351 adults and found that the overwhelming majority of participants reported feeling mentally and physically healthier after a volunteer experience. 76 percent of people who volunteered in the last twelve months said that volunteering has made them feel healthier 94 percent of people who volunteered in the last twelve months said that volunteering improved their mood 78 percent of them said that volunteering lowered their stress levels 96 percent reported that volunteering enriched their sense of purpose in life 80 percent of them feel like they have control over their health About a quarter of them reported that their volunteer work has helped them manage a chronic illness by keeping them active and taking their minds off of their own problems Volunteers have better personal scores than non-volunteers on nine well-established measures of emotional wellbeing including personal independence, capacity for rich interpersonal relationships and overall satisfaction with life. Volunteering also improved their mood and self-esteem For those of us who have spent time giving back to the community or helping further a cause we believe in, you might recognize many of the above findings to be correct. It doesn't seem far-fetched to think that helping others can provide you with a sense of connection, pride, and perspective. But did you know that it can also help you live longer? Researchers at the University of Exeter Medical School in the south of England analyzed data from 40 published studies and found evidence that volunteers had a 20 percent lower risk of death than their peers who do not volunteer. The study also found that volunteers had lower levels of depression, increased life satisfaction and enhanced well-being. Dr. Suzanne Richards, who lead the team of researchers at Exeter, said that more testing on this subject is necessary in order to find out whether or not biological, cultural, and social factors are associated with a willingness to volunteer in the first place, as they are often associated with better health. "The challenge now is to encourage people from more diverse backgrounds to take up volunteering, and then to measure whether improvements arise for them," she said.
