It’s election time! And You Breccia, the MN Section of AIPG elections are much more fun to be involved in. May the bi-ography with the most geologic puns win.
On a more serious note, please consider volun-teering! The MN Section of AIPG is a great group and we’d love to see new people get involved, ex-perienced people return, and younger members give it a go. We’re seek-ing nominations for Presi-dent-Elect, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. We revised our Bylaws last year to split the Secretary and Treasurer roles into sepa-rate positions, so you won’t be overwhelmed!
The President-Elect is part of a 3 year cycle: President-Elect for 1 year where you learn the job; President for 1 year where you lead us to greatness and attend the AIPG National Business Meeting and Conference in Sacramento, CA in 2020; and Past-President for 1 year where you’re a Director and advisor to the President.
The Vice-President fills in where needed and finds our luncheon speakers.
The Secretary takes notes at meetings and updates the website.
The Treasurer keeps the books and checks folks in
at the luncheons!
Meet some new people, volunteer with fellow geoscientists, and help us advance the profession of geoscience with just a couple of hours a week.
If you’re interested in running for one of the four officer positions, you need to be in the Young Professional, Member, or Certified Professional Geologist member cate-gories. Email us at [email protected]!

Updates from the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience, and Interior Design (MN Board of AELSLAGID)
Doreen Johnson, Execu-tive Director of the MN Board of AELSLAGID, gave us an overview of the role of the Board and some updates at the October luncheon. The MN Board of AELSLAGID administers
our Professional Geolo-gist licenses. Upcoming rule revisions have the potential to affect Profes-sional Geologists, so stay tuned for future an-nouncements requesting public input on things like
degree names, years of experience needed, etc.
The MN Board of AELSLAGID recently re-leased their biennial re-port to the Governor: http://mn.gov/aelslagid/policies.html.

Many of us regularly use the Coun-ty Geologic Atlases for our work in Minnesota.
The County Geologic Atlas program exists to develop maps and reports of the geology and hydrogeology of Minnesota. It is currently a joint program, with more recent atlases produced in two parts.
Part A - Geology is developed by the Minnesota Geological Sur-vey (MGS). Part A includes the wa-ter well database and 1:100,000 scale geologic maps showing prop-erties and distribution of sediments and rocks in the subsurface
Part B - Hydrogeology is developed by the DNR, expanding on the in-formation from Part A. Part B in-cludes maps of water levels in aqui-fers, direction of groundwater flow, water chemistry, and sensitivity to pollution .
MGS and DNR are looking for ‘testimonials’ on how people have used the county geologic atlases.
The County Geologic Atlases are used by a wide variety of stake-holders for many different applica-tions and their availability often results in time and money savings on projects MGS and DNR are par-
ticularly interested to know about spe-cific projects, but also find value in understanding in a more general sense the types of projects you use them for.
If you have specific application exam-ples that you could share it would be especially useful.

Our fundraiser was held on August 2nd. We had 48 golfers participate and 14 non-golfers joined us for the dinner and silent auction. We raised about $4,700 for our Education Fund, which is used exclusively for:
Funding an annual student geosci-ences student grant;
Donating mineral hardness kits to k-12 teachers;
Free technical luncheon registra-tions for undergraduate students; and
Supporting undergraduate geosci-ence curriculums in Minnesota.
A huge THANK YOU to everyone that participated this year!

Ammonoid Plate to be auctioned at the 2019 Spring Social!!!
Giant Ammonoid & Orthoceras Plate (Devonian black limestone
from Morocco).
This beauty was donated by Audrey Van Cleve and was
on display at during the golf fundraiser. The Minnesota
Section will be auctioning the ammonoid plate at our
Spring Social (date TBD).

teers within the Sections, fighting de-regulation efforts (recently in AZ, TX, and FL), and low AIPG membership to licensed Professional Geologist ratios.
Common themes of Section successes included: attending career fairs in geo-science departments, judging high school science fairs, conducting out-reach to legislators, and partnering with groups such as the Association of Environmental & Engineering Geolo-gists (AEG), the Society of Mining, Met-allurgy and Exploration (SME), the As-
The AIPG National business meeting and conference was held in Colorado Springs, Colorado this year. Each Sec-tion sent at least one delegate to the business meeting to hear about the National work, discuss Section issues and accomplishments, and vote in new Advisory Board members. AIPG Nation-al partners with the American Geosci-ences Institute (AGI) for webinars and other work. The AGI Executive Director gave an update.
Common suggestions from Sections for National involvement included: helping Sections figure out how to hold online meetings with high A/V standards, funding travel to the National confer-ence, lead regional and/or internation-al field trips, funding and recruiting national/international speakers for talks/workshops, development of an ASBOG preparation course, develop-ment of non-technical webinars (networking tips, growing client base, etc.), and partial/full funding of Section lobbyists.
Common themes of Section issues in-cluded: engagement of out-state mem-bers at meetings, getting new volun-
sociation of Women Geoscientists (AWG), and local geological societies.
The Texas Section developed a Virtual AIPG Texas Section Student Chapter. Check it out at http://aipg-tx.org/announcement-of-the-new-texas-statewide-aipg-student-chapter/.
Shanna Schmitt was elected to the Na-tional Advisory Board. If you have con-cerns, ideas, or feedback for the AIPG National, let her know!
