Accurate measurement of Wheel & Rail profiles is very critical for the maintenance & safety of Railway operations. Traditional manual measurement gauges, usually mounted/fixed on wheels can be inaccurate as the positioning of the sensor plays a vital role as the expected accuracy is in the order of micrometers. Hence repeatability will be affected when the same profile is measured by different operators. Measurements using manual gauges require manual entry of data which is error prone and makes it complicated to maintain a database for future wear analysis. ® CALIPRI is a universal handheld gauge for fast non-contact recording of geometrical data of objects of nearly any shape. With this device, you can measure lengths & other geometrical data such as angles or radii. Calipri can be considered the next generation of an intelligent, non- contact high tech vernier caliper. Due to the non-contact measuring method the issue of repeatability is addressed. Due to its handy size, Calipri can be used anywhere to measure profiles of Wheels even under the pits. Typical measurement errors when measuring with gauges – for example, due to tilted scanning, undefined measuring force or loop- sided application of the device – are ruled out with CALIPRI. The measurement result is free of operator influences and reproducible. The contact-free mode of operation delivers values that are significantly better reproducible in comparison to conventional measurement methods using contact even in the constrained space under the vehicle in a service workshop. A complete measurement process takes approximately 5 seconds per wheel profile. This means far less expenditure of time and growth in productivity. As soon as the entire profile line of the wheel has been recorded, the data is evaluated, and the resulting measurement values are visible on the CALIPRI display. Any deviations of given tolerances is displayed immediately. All measurement and profile data are made available for processing in the XML format or CSV format. All measurements can be visualized and analyzed. The creation of individual reports constitutes another feature. This entails sending measurement data in a clear presentation directly to a printer or else generating a pdf document. Wheel Profile “Wheel Profile” is the main module for the measurement of railway wheel sets with the Calipri Wheel. This module allows for the measurement of an entire wheel profile cross section within a few seconds. Alongside the key wheel flange dimensions (Flange height, Flange width, Flange Thickness), the wheel width, hollow tread as well as the rollover are determined. For the measurement, the user simply moves the sensor along the wheel by hand. In doing so, the sensor does not have to be in contact with the wheel nor does it have to be aligned accurately to the wheel. Wheel Diameter Gauge After measuring the Wheel profile, the operator can fit the Wheel diameter measurement guage which works on a 3-point measurement technique with extra broad base. Subsequent to another measurement over the track profile, the rolling circle diameter, in addition to the flange diameter, is shown automatically on the display. Wheel Clearance GaugeThe “Wheel Clearance” module allows for the measurement of the wheel clearance within a few seconds. For the measurement, firstly, the wheel clearance gauge that is equipped with a spring mechanism is clamped between both wheels. Using the Calipri, within few seconds, the Wheel Clearance of an axle can be measured directly.

Rail ProfileWith the “Rail” module, it is possible to measure the complete cross-section of a rail head within a few seconds and calculate the key data and wear parameters. Along with the essential measurements like head width and crown radius, the wear at the top and the sides can be determined by comparison with the standard profile. All established flat bottom rails and groove rails can be measured. The Calipri Wheel’s acoustic signals as well as the graphic display help even an unpracticed user to attain a quick and reproducible result.
