California Institute of Technology

Location of Caltech:

CalTech is a private research university located in Pasadena,California , United States. Caltech was established in 1891 in Pasadena by a local businessman and politician Amos G. Throop, Amos G. Throop is mostly known for being a abolitionist (Historical movement to end African slave trade and set slaves free) and also he is the founder of CIT. CIT is 124-acre and its campus is located approximately 11 mi (18 km) northeast of Downtown, Los Angeles.

History of Caltech: When was Caltech founded ?Caltech was founded in 1891 as Throop University by Amos Gager Throop. The name was changed to Throop Polytechnic Institute (1893-1912) and then to Throop College of Technology (1913-1919).

When did Caltech receive its present name ? Caltech became the California Institute of Technology on February 10, 1920.

Former President of Caltech ?Jean-Lou Chameau(2006- )

Did Einstein teach in Caltech ?Einstein was a visiting professor at Caltech for three winter terms only—1931, 1932, and 1933. When Einstein decided to settle in the United States permanently, he accepted an appointment at Princeton University.

Who was the first woman to receive a PhD from Caltech? The first female recipient of a Caltech PhD was Dorothy Ann Semenow in 1955. Her degree was awarded in chemistry and biology.

When did Caltech first admit women undergraduates? Women undergraduates were admitted in the fall of 1970, four of them receiving bachelor's degrees in 1973.

Academic Divisions in CaltechBiology & Biological Engineering :Caltech biologists work to reveal nature's mechanisms—how tens of thousands of components act in concert in cells, how organisms grow from single cells, how the brain maintains its consciousness, emotions, and superb computational capabilities, and what happens when any of those processes goes awry.

Chemistry & Chemical Engineering: Caltech's chemists and chemical engineers study nature's most intricate processes on scales from the subatomic to the macroscopic. Their discoveries lead to the creation of revolutionary tools, molecules, and materials for medicine, clean energy, environmental protection, and more.

Engineering & Applied Science: Caltech's engineers and applied scientists invent the future, working across a wide variety of disciplines and at the fundamental boundaries of science to both conceive and design tomorrow's technologies.

Geological & Planetary Sciences: Whether studying the atmosphere, the minerals of Mars, or earthquakes on Earth, Caltech's geological and planetary scientists use powerful geophysical tools and methods to unravel these phenomenal natural systems and understand the past, present, and future of all our solar system's planets.

Humanities & Social Science: The division brings together diverse faculty, from historians to philosophers to economists, to explore human history and creativity, look at the decisions we make and how we make them, and provide new insights into how we communicate and understand our world.

Physics, Mathematics, & Astronomy: Caltech's physicists, mathematicians, and astronomers explore the universe from all perspectives and at all scales. The division brings together experimentalists and theorists, applied and basic scientists, and encourages them to delve into time and space, from today back to the Big Bang, from the cosmos to the subatomic.

Those are the 6 divisions with strong emphasis on science and engineering.

Admission :

Admission to Caltech is selective; They welcome only about 230 new freshmen and 10 to 15 new transfer students to campus each fall. Student’s come from all over the world and United States bringing their diverse experiences, and passions.

Required Classes:• 4 years of math (including calculus)• 1 year of physics• 1 year of chemistry• 3 years of English (4 years recommended)• 1 year of U.S. history/government (waived for international students)

**Note these classes are the classes you need to take in High School**

• Caltech only review applications during the FALL. • All first-year applicants must submit ALL required testing (SAT or ACT) in order to have their application evaluated for admission.• In your application form you could include no more than 5 total evaluations (classes). • Extracurricular activities

Tuition:

The chart below lists the estimated nine-month, full-time cost of attendance budget that is generally applicable to Caltech undergraduate students enrolled in the 2014-15 school year

Financial Aid

All undergraduate financial aid is awarded based on need. Annually, nearly 60 percent of undergraduates receive aid under Caltech's policy to provide all U.S. citizens and permanent residents with the support required to meet 100 percent of their families' demonstrated need.

Caltech AthleticsCaltech has sport’s for both men and women in Basketball, Cross Country, Track & Field, Swimming & Diving, Fencing, Tennis, and Water Polo.

Men also have Soccer, and Baseball.

Women also have Volleyball.

Fun Facts:• Caltech’s mascot is a Beavers. Why ? Because it’s an homage(special honor or respect) to nature’s engineer.• Caltech’s color is Orange & White. • When the Museum of Hoaxes (resource for reporting and discussing hoaxes and urban legends) website published a list of the top 10 college pranks of all time, Caltech was the only school to be listed twice. (Caltech student’s have been known for doing lots of pranks) Like one was changing the Hollywood sign to Caltech. • Caltech's motto is “The truth shall make you free.”• The photocopying technique known as xerography was developed by a Caltech alum in 1938.

• Over the years, the Caltech campus has made cameo appearances in several well-known TV shows and movies, including The X-Files, The West Wing, Legally Blonde, Entourage, and Mission: Impossible, among others.

• Harrison Schmitt is an American Geologists, and in Dec. 1972 as one of the crew members of Apollo 17 was the first member of NASA’s first Scientists-astronaut group to fly in space, also was the twelfth person to set foot on the moon. He received a B.S(Bachelor Science) degree in geology from CalTech in 1957. • Life in the Caltech community is governed by the Honor code which simply states:

• Also Stephen Hawking made a public lecture on April 16,2013. Did I mention, Free Admission.

• A lot of the Big Bang Theory episodes take place in Caltech like Sheldon’s and Raj office, the cafeteria etc.

• In 1974 Stephen Hawking was appointed to the Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Scholar visiting professorship at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
