The Chumash People

The island Karana lived on is thought to be the island of San Nicholas. This island is about a six-hour trip from Los Angeles California. The island is all by itself and has lots of wildlife, including otter, dolphins and sea elephants. There were also wild dogs there in Karana’s time. San Nicholas was a popular place for hunters of the sea otters, and the Aleuts, who hunted the otters, would travel to the island to hunt.

The island is about eight miles long and has some very steep cliffs. There is a large coral reef surrounding it.

The Catskill Mountains are located in New York State, approximately 100 miles northwest of New York

City.

This is a story about a boy named Sam who leaves home one day to find his grandfather’s farm in the Catskill Mountains of New York.

He learns to live in the wilderness and captures a falcon who he trains to hunt for him. Later, Sam finds a partly hollowed out tree which he makes his home. He survives a long hard winter there.

This is the story of a 13 year-old girl named Charlotte Doyle, a proper young lady who is getting ready to take a sea voyage home to America. She is put btween a mean ship captain and his crew during a trecherous trip across the Atlantic ocean.
