Interview with a New DancerAmy Bobyn

When did you begin Ukrainian dancing?

I started Ukrainian dancing with Tryzub when I was three years old, so that means this would be my fourteenth year. Hopefully I’m a little better at my one two threes now!

Why did you decide to audition for the Ensemble and what does being part of the Tryzub Ensemble mean to you?

I decided to join the Ensemble for quite a few reasons actually. I’ve grown up around dancers, so I’ve always had this dream of one day being up on the big stage as a “professional” Ukrainian dancer just like my dad or older sister have. I have a tremendous amount of pride towards being Ukrainian and love being able to call myself a Ukrainian dancer, so when it came time to decide whether to move up to the big leagues, it was hard to say no. To me, being a member of the

Tryzub Ensemble means being a proud member of my Ukrainian culture and community, all while doing something I truly love with great people.

Why have you continued to dance despite the times where it may have conflicted with other activities?

Oh trust me, there have been many times where other commitments have conflicted with my dancing, but I guess the fact that I’ve stuck with it all these years tells me how much I really do love it. I’m a very active and involved person, and it has gotten very hard sometimes to juggle everything, but I think it’s all worth it. I couldn’t imagine my life without Tryzub, I really haven’t known anything else.

Have you performed yet with the Ensemble? If yes, how did it go and what did it feel like!? If not, what are you most looking forward to?

I have actually performed twice now with the Ensemble, once at the School Zabava and once at a ballroom dancing competition. I didn’t really think much of them at the time to be honest, just another performance that I’m so used to. Then I got there, and standing off stage getting ready to dance for the first time with the Ensemble was probably one of the most nerve racking experiences of my life. I was terrified! I felt like there was a whole new standard to reach, not only as a member of the group but as a dancer. In the end it was amazing though, and I’m starting to feel much more confident. I definitely wasn’t perfect by any stretch, but I was pretty proud of myself.

Which is your favorite Ensemble dance and which are you most looking forward to performing?

My favourite Ensemble dance is probably Volyn. It was the first dance I learned and got a spot in, and it ended up being my first performance as well. It’s really just a fun and bouncy dance, and Volyn is

definitely my favourite region for that reason. I recently got to perform Karichka, which was exciting because it definitely wasn’t one of my best dances to start out with, but now that I’ve actually done it it’s not so intimidating.

Obviously the dance I’m most excited to finally perform would be Hopak. It’s just THE dance. I’ve seen it be performed countless times by the Ensemble and have it take my breath away each time, but actually performing it myself would be an entirely new experience. It’s almost like a check off the bucket list!

What advice would you give to dancers interested in joining the Ensemble?

If I were to give any future or interested dancers advice, it would be to stick to it and try it out. I know I was considering not joining, but I’m so glad I did. It’s definitely hard, and it’s a big commitment, but in the end you won’t just leave as a great dancer, but with unforgettable experiences and countless friends along the way. □

My dad, Mel Bzdel, has always been my inspiration and role model for everything I do in my life. When I was eight years old, I learned of his dancing career in his younger days and right away asked to be put in lessons. Mel took this as an opportunity to pull his red boots out of the closet, and we both joined the Tryzub School of Ukrainian Dance. Tryzub quickly became not only a dance school, but an extended family to us. My father and I both met some of our best friends in this group, friends who are still in my life to this day.

Mel had this talent of bringing so much life and love to the stage. Watching him perform was absolutely enchanting; he made it so clear that he was dancing not only for his own love of dance, but to entertain the audience as well. He found joy in his own performance but also made it enjoyable for everyone else dancing with him. But it wasn’t all fun and games; he worked his butt off for that talent! I still have yet to see someone who can do split jumps as well as him in their late thirties!

On January 29th, 2007, Mel was taken from us after a long battle with brain cancer. Even after he passed, my father has continued to be an inspiration to the many people who knew him.

It is because of this inspiration that I have decided to create a team called Mel’s Belles in his honor running in the Spring Sprint. The Spring Sprint is an annual run which occurs all over Canada to raise money for the Brain Tumor Foundation of Canada. This cause is extremely dear to my heart, and I hope to have as many people running with me as possible. It is a 5k run or walk taking place on Sunday, June 9th, and I would absolutely love to have you on my team. If you cannot join Mel’s Belles on this date, donations of any amount would be greatly appreciated!

This is a cause which is very close to those who knew Mel, as no one should ever have to lose a parent, child, sibling, or friend to a brain tumor. After the overwhelming support my family received through Tryzub after the passing of my Dad, I know that this extension of my own family will come together once again to honor the memory of my father, and raise not only funds, but hope for a cure for brain tumors.

Below is a link to the team page. Once again, we would absolutely love to have you run or walk with us, but we are so grateful for absolutely any support we get!

Thank you and hope you decide to be a part of my team! □

Tryzub School:Stepping Into a New Chapter...

Dean Mackedenski

After completing 16 successful years of inspiring children to discover their love of Ukrainian dance in Calgary, the Tryzub School of Ukrainian Dance is excited to begin a new chapter starting this fall!

The mission of the Tryzub School of Ukrainian Dance has always been to provide the best Ukrainian dance instruction in Calgary, while guiding and encouraging our dancers with technical training to prepare them to become the Ensemble of tomorrow. Each year presents new and exciting opportunities for our organization and we want to see the enthusiasm, energy, and passion of our School grow bigger and better!

Beginning in the month of May, a large scale advertising campaign targeting southeast Calgary communities will kick-off the plan to develop Tryzub School. Our goal is to expand Tryzub School beyond its current borders and embrace as many people as possible wanting to begin, continue, or renew their love of dance.

Under the artistic direction of Mrs. Anna Kanevets, and with our exceptionally experienced faculty, we intend to maintain our current Junior Tryzub & Tryzub Adult Class schedules, but beginning next year for the

2013 – 2014 dance season, we plan to expand our Fundamentals of Ukrainian Dance classes to encompass both Monday and Tuesday evenings. We hope to see our Tryzub Studios filled with children finding the passion that is Tryzub!

Also beginning next year, Tryzub School is very excited to be offering Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) ballet classes for dancers of all ages on Thursdays and Saturdays with highly trained instructors. With ballet being the core of all dance,

we hope to see a new group of dancers wanting to train and develop their classical ballet technique within our studio through this globally recognized professional program.

We encourage everyone to visit our website at tryzub.ca to view the newly posted class schedule for next year and pre-register for classes before they fill up!

As Tryzub School begins this new chapter, we hope you will continue to be part of our journey as we strive to excel as Calgary’s premier school for Ukrainian Dance!

Tryzub Alumni,

Each of us has many chapters in our history, and for some of us, these chapters follow a common thread. As Ukrainian dancers, one of our goals is the preservation of our Ukrainian heritage. Whether to rekindle old friendships, network with peers, or form new business contacts, it is always important to stay connected with those from our past.

We have reached out far into the world and the Tryzub Alumni Association wants to locate all of you. Forward this edition of the Trubka to your alumni friends and help us stay connected!

Our next alumni evening will be held on Friday June 14th at 7:00 pm at the Bull & Finch in Douglasdale (11520 24 Street SE). Hope to see you there!

2013 Christmas Carolling Thank-You

Tryzub sends out a very large thank you to all of the houses that graciously hosted our carolers for Ukrainian Christmas on January 6th & 7th! Our caroling troupe made it out to 9 houses (including one hospital visit) and raised just over $3,000! We went as far south as Millarville and up to the Northwest in Bearspaw. A big thank you to everyone who donated.

A reminder that we will be out again in 2014 anywhere between January 4th - 7th.
