Meet Abdoulie, Kevin and Baboucarr!Kevin is an energetic 35-year-old guy who loves to be active in his community. Knickers in a TwistThanks to donor and grant funds, Banchero Disability Partners held a two-full-day Yoga Retreat for clients on November 10th and 11th, at Autumn Ridge Apartments (thanks to Autumn Ridge for the generous donation of their gym and cabana space). The class was led by past staff member Echo Rowe, who has gone on to become a professional yoga instructor. Echo covered yoga theory and history, as well as benefits of yoga, interspersed with meditation, breathing exercises, and of course stretches and poses.

Yoga helps us to be in touch with our bodies so that we can be aware of our stress before it damages our health. Poses strengthen our bodies so that we can remain strong and agile throughout our lifetimes. Many of the students are long-term yogis, and a couple were new to the game. Everyone came away renewed and refreshed, and we hope to get Echo back for another yoga retreat next year.

Farewell to Marjean Knight Banchero Disability Partners gives a fond farewell and heartfelt thanks to Marjean Knight who as Program Director helped us refine many of our practices such as medication administration and financial management. Marjean made many notable friends and we look forward to seeing her at events and keeping up with her as she moves on to new adventures.

Welcome Program Director Abdoulie FaalWe are honored and grateful to welcome long-term staff member Abdoulie Faal into his new role as our Program Director. As you learned on page 1, Abdoulie has worked

as a primary staff person to some of our clients for most of the past 15 years. In addition to being a great primary, Abdoulie was the Program Manager for the supported living program at Provail, as well as earning his Master’s degree in Public Health. After he wrapped up his Master’s degree, we were able to convince Abdoulie to lead our team full-time, and he has taken on the role with enthusiasm and humility. Abdoulie adheres to the servant-leader philosophy of management and he says: “I look forward to supporting this wonderful team as they bring forth their very best efforts in service of our clients.” Please join us in welcoming Abdoulie to his new role.

National Association of Dual Diagnosis Annual Conference The NADD conference was held in Seattle on November 3 and 4. Since the conference is usually held out of state, we sent 11 of our staff members. Everyone gained up-to-date information regarding support and treatment for people who have both a diagnosis of an intellectual disability and a mental health disorder. Like all NADD conferences of the past 15 years, this one focused primarily on the topic of the causes and treatment of autism. International comparative studies show that the prevalence of autism is far higher in North America, and environmental causes such as pesticides and/or toxins are strongly correlated with the increased prevalence. Washington State has been a leader in banning toxins correlated with autism, but this has been an uphill battle on the national front.

Kevin is friendly, social, and hardworking, and he loves sports and games (especially computer and board games). Kevin takes swimming lessons at the pool, cooking classes at the Community College, yoga and drama classes at the Community Center, bowling at Kenmore Lanes, and soccer, bocce ball, and golf through Special Olympics. Kevin also participates in Seattle Parks and Recreation activities, including holiday boat cruise, trips to Leavenworth, bingo, and movie nights (Kevin’s favorite movie genre is superhero). Kevin participates and volunteers at Camp Long and Camp Burton in West Seattle every summer. Kevin loves to participate in family events and activities, such as going to the Husky games, weddings and family trips. During his spare time at home (you may be wondering by now how Kevin has any spare time at all), he watches golden oldies such as Gold Rush and The Rifleman.

After just over 3 years of shared successes, Abdoulie has recently been promoted to BDP Program Director (see organizational news). BDP staff member Baboucarr Hydarra was handpicked to succeed Abdoulie because of his proven track record of excellent client support, and because - let’s face it - you need to be young (or young at heart!) and full of energy to keep up with a day in the life of Kevin. Baboucarr supports Kevin to maintain his activity calendars as well as arranging his transportation to and from these many activities. Baboucarr continues the lessons of household, money, and health management that Abdoulie launched. Baboucarr is a key liaison to Kevin’s family with whom Kevin maintains very close ties.

One of our favorite qualities in Kevin is his compassion for others. He keeps an eye out for others in his apartment building who may be less capable of doing things on their own, and he alerts staff if they are in need. Kevin is a true gentleman; he always offers to lend a hand with a grocery bag or opening a door if your hands are full.

Kevin has worked at the City of Seattle Utility Department in the mail room and the Goodwill store in Shoreline as a stockperson. Kevin is very hard-working and takes his job seriously. His attendance is excellent and he is always on time. Kevin no longer has a job at the Goodwill store; he is working hard with his job coach, BDP staff, and his family to land another job in stocking, mail distribution, janitorial work, or kitchen work in a restaurant..

Kevin was born and raised in Seattle, but his paternal heritage is rooted in Scandinavia. Kevin is proud of his Norwegian lineage and often boasts about it. He is also proud of his wonderful parents (see picture), and we know the feeling is mutual. We are grateful to Kevin and his family for the chance to help him take a big old bite out of life!

We learned that golfers don’t mind a little (or a lot!) of rain. The second annual Cedar Grove Invitational, to benefit Banchero Disability Partners, was held on September 10th at Washington National Golf Course. Despite a windy downpour, a great time was had by all, with the game followed by a celebratory banquet. Golfers shared their joy with generous donations, and we were able to raise over $80,000!!! We wish to thank these amazing Golf Tournament sponsors, many of whom are business partners of Cedar Grove Composting: Alliant Insurance Services, Inc., Argo Blower & Manufacturing Company, Inc., Holliday Masonry, Interflex Group Inc., Key Bank, Lakeside Industries, Landau Associates, MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions, Steve Malshuk and Cathy Banchero Malshuk, Pacific Public Affairs, R3 Reliable Redistribution Resource, Tacoma Screw, Western Peterbilt Inc., and Wolseley Industrial Group. Most important, we would like to thank Cedar Grove Composting for completely underwriting this great event for the second year, and for making arrangements and ensuring a smooth day on the course.

Thank you again to the Gertrude and Eldon Sallee Foundation. The trustees of this foundation chose to grant $15,000 to BDP for our general fund. Thank you so much to the Sallee Foundation for prioritizing people who have developmental disabilities in King County!
