National Art Honor Society:National Art Honor Society: The National Art Honor Society is back in full

Swing and we were involved with Homecoming in October! NAHS officers for the 2011-2012 school year are President: Marcus Floyd, Vice-President: Destiny Hairtfield. Secretary: Amber Hancock, Treas-urer: Janhavi Giribhattanavar and Public Relations: Kaila Hill.

Art I students are working on Perspective and The Elements of Design. Their 3-D/2-D artworks of Frank Stella are hanging in the hallway! What a great way to study Stella’s unique and creative abstract style.

Art II classes are finishing up their Extreme Viewpoint Portrait projects which will be on display in the Visual Arts hallway during the month of October. If you are stopping by, please take a walk down to the 300 hallway to see these interesting and expressive drawings. Our focus will shift from traditional portrait drawing with graphite pencil to a more non-traditional style of self-portraiture modeled after a Renaissance painter named Giuseppe Arcimboldo with colored media such as colored pencils and markers. Look for these finished projects to be in the hallways during November.

During the month of September Art III/IV stu-dents were creating wonderful Power points on their summer art experience and sharing them with the class. They also participated in creating the newest T-Shirt Design and Frisbee Design for the Ultimate Boys A Team.

Independent advanced art students are plan-ning on working on large canvas pieces in a series. They researched an artist that they felt connected to and went from there. Look for these pieces to be displayed in school and also in a community location.

All art students please check with your art teachers about what will be happening at the Peters-burg Regional Art Center this year. In Sept. there was a “All Media Show” on Friday, Sept. 9th at 7:00 p.m. October 14 the Petersburg Regional Art Center will hold a reception for their Student Show in the Mezza-nine Gallery. This is a no entry fee exhibit for high school and college students only. The entry deadline is Tuesday, October 8 at 12 noon. Many of the pho-tographers and artists from L. C. Bird will have entries in the exhibit which is awarding $250 in cash awards. The Petersburg Regional Art Center is located at 132 N. Sycamore Street in Petersburg in the old Butter-worth’s furniture store. Please make plans to attend to support our Bird artists!

3D Design 1 is finishing up their one and two point perspective projects. They will be on display in the back hallway near room 320. Come check them out! After the perspective project is complete, the class will start working with clay. We will start learning about basic clay techniques, vocabulary, and proper clay procedures. Each student will be required to make a pinch pot object, a coiled vessel, and a slab structure.

3D Design 2 started off the year by making a face mug. The students will be using the coiling hand building technique and will learn to pull a handle. We will learn about face jugs and the history behind them. After we are finished with the face mugs, we will move on to working with stained glass.

3D Design 3 started off the year in a similar way as 3D Design 2. The students in 3D Design 3 were required to construct a face jug instead of a mug using the same hand building technique. The students used their previous knowledge of pulling handles and recreated a unique handle design of their own. While the 3D Design 3 students were working on their face jugs they will begin using the throwing wheels. The 3D Design 3 students will be required to use the wheel at least 4 separate times during each of the four nine weeks and this will be given as a participation grade. After the students are finished with their face jugs, they will be moving on to stained glass but on a much larger scale building upon their previous knowledge from working with this material.

The Photography One students will be spend-ing the month of October finishing a Pinhole Camera project that was started in September. A pinhole camera is a primitive, lens-less camera that the stu-dents have made from an oatmeal container. Much like the earliest cameras used in the development of photography, a pinhole camera makes a paper nega-tive that is turned into a picture. In addition, the students are beginning to learn to use their film S.L.R. cameras. Please don’t forget that all students must

have their S.L.R. film cameras in class no later than Friday, October 7. This new knowledge of the S.L.R. camera will culminate in early November with our annual field trip to Monticello. During our visit to the home of Thomas Jefferson students will use their S.L.R. cameras for the first time. Information about the field trip will be given out in early October.

Students in the Photography 2 classes will be using the slides they created from their Slide Film project to create emulsion transfer and emulsion lift projects. This involves using Polaroid instant film, much like the type of pictures created from the by-gone Polaroid Instamatic cameras from the 1980’s. These are very expressive and evocative images that are unique and cannot be reproduced. Later in the month the Photo 2 students will begin a study of panoramic photography and Photomontage. These new skills will be practiced on the annual Monticello field trip in early November.

The Photography 3 students will also be creat-ing Polaroid emulsion transfers and lifts from the slides they created in September. Their preparation for Monticello will be different, however, as these students will seek out the hidden and lesser seen treasures of this historic home site.

Any advanced Art, Photography, or 3-D Design student who wishes to apply for the Honors program must have his/her portfolio application in by the end of the school day Friday, October 7 to the respective teacher. We will be notifying the applicants by letter on or before Wednesday, October 12.

FCCLAFCCLA

FCCLA, the Ultimate Leadership Experience, is headed to the State Fair. Will you be joining us?

Everyone enrolled in Personal Development, Commercial Foods/Catering and Parenting/Early Child-hood Careers can join FCCLA for $15.00. If you have taken a Family & Consumer Sciences class previ-ously, you may still join FCCLA this year by attending after-school meetings. The $15.00 dues cover your state and national dues, which allows you to partici-pate in both state and national leadership activities for the school year. The first State FCCLA leadership opportunity is The State Fair of Virginia on October 3. This is an approved school field trip. We will leave school after first period and return at 5:00. School dress code applies. You must participate in one of the State FCCLA contests in order to join us for this event. Check the state website, www.virginiafccla.org for more details. You will complete an SOL Scavenger Hunt upon arrival at the fairgrounds, after which you may enjoy the rides and fair cuisine.

The cost for the trip is $5 for entrance, $20 for unlimited rides, $2 for the contest entry fee, and $3 for transportation. You will be responsible for bringing spending money for food, drinks, rides, and games. All money is due no later than September 27. Bring your money to Mrs. Lythgoe or Mrs. Parent chaper-ones are welcome and will be responsible for their ride tickets and spending money. Chaperones will be assigned a group of students for the trip.

Information is posted on the school website, www.chesterfield.k12,va.us. Additional questions can be directed to Mrs. Lythgoe at [email protected] or Mrs. Lynch at [email protected].

Commercial Foods/Catering Commercial Foods/Catering

Students Students Students will be busy and having much hands-

on time in the Foods Lab this year. They immediately started their own business, a great FCCLA Star Event.

Chef jackets, part of the class fee, were or-dered in September for students who paid their class fee. (This fee can be paid on line or in $30 install-ments at the start of each nine-week quarter.) Each student will have to provide his/her own black pants and a white shirt or white T-shirt to wear under the chef jacket.

We will have seven Café days for which we’ll prepare lunches in class and fill pre-orders/serve the faculty and staff on the early release days. Five or six students will be scheduled to work after school each month in preparation for these early-release lunch days.

Minute Math MinutesMinute Math Minutes It has been said that math is an area of study

which revolves around numbers. If that’s the case, these Math Minutes are brought to you by the number 2. The Math Department would like to welcome two new members to its team. First, we have Mr. William Hicks who has previously taught at Capital City Pro-gram, an alternative school in Richmond and at the Connections Academy in Chesterfield County. since 2006. Mr. Hicks is teaching Algebra 1 and AFDA this year.

In addition to Mr. Hicks, we welcome the calm and collected mind of Mr. James Emmette Epperson, a recent graduate of James Madison University who hails from Southampton County. This year, Honors Geometry is his calling.

Math is more than just numbers. The beauty of math can be found in puzzles. Perhaps you can figure out the solution to this mathematical twist to a classic riddle:

As I was going to St. Ives, I met a man with seven wives. Each wife had seven sacks. Each sack had seven cats. Each cat had seven kits. Kits, cats, sacks, wives… How many bodies, tails and legs were in this story about St. Ives?

Exceptional EducationExceptional Education During the first month of school, exceptional

education teachers met with both new and returning students and contacted parents regarding any neces-sary IEP revisions. If you have any questions regard-ing your child’s special education services, please contact the special education office at 768-6110 Ext. 132.

The exceptional education teachers will offer tutoring sessions beginning in October for all core academic areas. Students who are struggling in English, Math, Science, and Social Studies are encour-aged to attend these sessions as soon as they begin to have difficulties with course work. Tutoring is scheduled as follows: English (Monday), Math (Tuesday), Science (Wednesday), Social Studies (Thursday).

Family & Consumer Sciences Family & Consumer Sciences

Parent Volunteers/Chaperones Needed Personal Development classes will be engaged

in hands-on financial management skills the month of October. After completing lessons on managing a checking account, budgeting, taxes, net/gross in-come, and insurance, the students will take a field trip to Finance Park in the Junior League building on West Broad Street. Students will be given a life scenario which includes their net income and will have to plan a budget to meet their needs in this 4-hour activity. Parent Volunteers are needed to help run this activity as the 125 students move to various stations to complete their budget. You do not have to ride the school bus, just car pool to the Junior League building just off Rt. 64 for training at 7:30 a.m. on the date of the trip. The students will arrive at 8:15. We will leave to return to Bird at 12:30-12:45. Everyone will need to bring a bag lunch. We will be taking Personal Devel-opment students in both Mrs. Lynch’s and Mrs. Lyth-goe’s 3rd and 7th period classes on Nov. 11, and periods 1, 2, and 4 on Nov. 14. The cost of the trip is covered by their class fee. Please contact Mrs. Lynch or Mrs. Lythgoe at the following e-mail addresses if you can help us. Emails: [email protected] or [email protected]. You don’t have to have a student enrolled in Personal Development to volun-teer. PTSO parents are, of course, welcome to volun-teer.

Parenting class students are learning about different types and compositions of families and how to balance work and family. Visit the classroom to see their Want Ads for the Perfect Parent. They are also gearing up for their pumpkin carving contest. Be sure to look for photos on the web and in the next Sky-hawk News.

Catering students are mastering Safety and Sanitation so that they can get their onsite Café started. These students are taking pre-orders for faculty lunches for early release days to practice their entrepreneurial skills. Figuring the cost and profit margin can be quite challenging as they start operat-ing their business. Check the school website for photos.

Choral Music DepartmentChoral Music Department The L.C. Bird Chorus Department has been

busy this fall preparing for the upcoming Fall Concert entitled “A Celebration of Thanks,” slated for Thurs-day, November 10, at 7 p.m. in the Margaret F. Gregory Auditorium. This concert will feature choral pieces of hope, perseverance, and commitment to overcoming adversity, including a piece written by Rene Clausen in remembrance of September 11th. Tickets will be available at the door.

Students have also been actively promoting their annual Fall Florida Citrus Fundraiser, selling navel oranges, grapefruit, and tangelos to help offset ex-penses that the choirs incur throughout the year. This year--especially students in the show choirs--are enthusiastically selling as they are hoping to be able to participate in a National Show Choir competition in Nashville. If you or anyone you know wants sweet, fresh citrus sunshine that will help support our choral groups please contact Donna Gocha in the Chorus Department by calling (804) 768-6110 ext. 139 or by e-mailing [email protected].

Back-to-School Night was Monday, September 26. The PTSO Budget was approved. Thanks for your patience while we took care of this necessary busi-ness item. Back-to-School Night was a wonderful opportunity to meet our new principal, Dr. Laura Hebert, to meet the teachers, and to find out what is going on in our students’ classes. Many thanks to our teachers who took time away from their families, prepared information for parents to take home and returned to school to meet us after a long day at work teaching our children. Thank you to the stu-dents and parents who volunteered at the PTSO table, and thank you to those parents who stopped by to join the PTSO, turn in volunteer forms, and place orders for our Fall Plant Sale.

October promises to be a busy month for students, teachers and parents at LC Bird. Having

settled into the school routine, it is now time to really concentrate on academics during the day, homework in the evenings, and all the activity in and around the school. There are football games, other fall sports activities, Homecoming Week, the Homecoming Parade and Dance, and the juniors receive their class rings. Please help the PTSO to support all of these programs by volunteering to help us make these programs a big success for our children! Get in-volved!!

October will also be a busy month for the PTSO with many opportunities to get involved. If you missed the chance to sign up during Back-to-School Night, please see the volunteer opportunities for the month of October listed in this newsletter and on the website at www.birdptso.com. Select the activities you wish to participate in and complete a volunteer form or email the PTSO: [email protected]. Our Volunteer Coordinator or the coordinator of one of our events will contact you for your help! If you have not joined the PTSO yet, pick up an envelope in the main office, complete the information on the outside, and send in $5 per member to the school/main office. It’s the best money you’ll spend this year!

Together, we can make a real difference at Bird High School! Have a great month!

Chesterfest Booth Great Success Chesterfest Booth Great Success

On September 24, the Bird PTSO hosted a food booth at Chesterfest, staffed by volunteer par-ents, students, and community members.

PTSO member Cindy Reid coordinated the effort under the direction of Sherry Harris. Chesterfest Committee members Greta Tucker, Debra Harnel, Michelle Dickens, and Sandy Singh coordinated par-ents and students helping out in the booth during the day. Hamburgers, cheeseburgers and hotdogs were cooked fresh on the grills and sold along with chips, sodas, and water. Cindy and the PTSO would like to thank all those who helped with Chesterfest! This was a great way for the PTSO to raise money from the community and show others how the Bird PTSO works very hard to support our children and school! The proceeds from our sales will help support the Homecoming Dance, Junior Ring Ceremony Recep-tion, Student Academic Excellence Receptions, After Prom Party, Scholarships, Teacher Appreciation events, and more!

Community Service Through Community Service Through

PTSOPTSO The PTSO is in need of student help for up-

coming PTSO/school sponsored activities. Any stu-dent volunteering to work on school/PTSO-sponsored and supported projects will earn community service hours. At the end of the year, the PTSO will provide a Certificate of Service indicating the number of volun-teer hours worked throughout the year. This will come in handy for college and work application and on resumes!

Interested students should email [email protected] for more information.
