MISSION STATEMENTOur purpose is to contribute to the achievement of Education Queensland’s vision by providing high quality education that makes a positive difference to the lives of all Queenslanders.

At Glenvale we build a positive learning culture by providing challenging, interactive and engaging learning experiences and by nurturing relationships with families and the wider community. Everyone, Everyday, achieving together.

AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUMA quality education for all young Australians is critical to maintaining Australia’s productivity and quality of life. The development of the Australian Curriculum represents a commitment by all Australian states and territories to work together to develop a world-class curriculum for all young Australians.

The Australian Curriculum will make clear to parents, teachers and students what young people should be taught and the quality of learning that is expected of them, wherever they go to school in Australia.

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is responsible for developing a world-class national curriculum that will inspire and challenge all Australian students.

The Australian Curriculum sets out what each Australian student should be taught in relation to learning areas, general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities.

Key elements of the curriculum are content descriptions and achievement standards organised in learning areas. The content descriptions specify what teachers are expected to teach. Achievement standards describe what students are typically able to understand and to do as they progress through their schooling.

The Australian Curriculum provides examples that illustrate each content description, called elaborations. Student work samples illustrate the achievement standards.

The Australian Curriculum is presented online at www.australiancurriculum.edu.au to enable all Australians to see what is being taught across the nation. An online curriculum also helps teachers to plan and share information and resources across the country.

At Glenvale SS all teachers use the Curriculum into the classroom (C2C) resources to support the implementation of the Australian Curriculum. This approach ensures consistency and continuity of planning, teaching and assessment across all classes.

Student reports are issued at the end of both semester one and two. These reports are emailed to caregivers. Reporting comments are directly linked to the assessment of student’s performance against Australian Curriculum standards. While parents and caregivers are encouraged to communicate frequently with their child’s teacher regarding their learning, formal parent/teacher interviews are offered late in term one and early in term three.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORTGlenvale State School is committed to providing a safe, respectful and disciplined learning environment for students and staff, where students have opportunities to engage in quality learning experiences and acquire values supportive of their lifelong wellbeing.

Our Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students is designed to facilitate high standards of behaviour so that the learning and teaching in our school can be effective and students can participate positively within our school community.

We are committed to growth in learning for staff, students and families. This will be achieved if all school community members work together towards:

• supporting emotional needs

• developing positive attitudes

• developing strength of character

• building relationships through effective and regular communication

• setting high expectations for individual achievement

• developing capability by skilling; and

• interacting with a balanced curriculum.

All areas of Glenvale State School are learning and teaching environments. We consider behaviour management to be an opportunity for valuable social learning as well as a means of maximising the success of curriculum implementation.

Our Responsible Behaviour Plan outlines our system for facilitating positive behaviours, preventing inappropriate behaviour and responding to unacceptable behaviours. Through our school plan shared expectations for student behaviour are obvious to everyone, assisting Glenvale State School to create and maintain a positive and productive learning and teaching environment, where all school community members have clear and consistent expectations and understandings of their role in the educational process.

The following values form an integral part of the Glenvale school community and are taught to promote high standards of responsible behaviour.

We value:

• Responsibility

• Respect

• Safety

To access the full Glenvale Responsible Behaviour Plan please visit our school website.

SCHOOL CHAPLAINCY PROGRAMThe Chaplaincy Program is a supportive service available to the entire school community every school day. Our chaplain is a safe person for students to connect with at school providing a listening ear and a caring presence.

School administration, teachers and parents may request support for students from our chaplain in relation to challenges including those arising from family conflict or parent separations, friendship, peer relations or self-esteem concerns. This may be an isolated discussion or ongoing depending on the student’s level of need. Parental consent is sought for these cases.

Our school chaplain also initiates and implements proactive programs to help students develop appropriate social skills and build self-esteem. Daily lunch/playtime time activities as well as participation in off campus activities such as camps, excursions and interschool sport enable the chaplain to establish and maintain a positive, trusting rapport and relationship with students.

The chaplaincy program provides an integral service within the suite of interventions available at Glenvale State School to support students’ social and emotional well-being.

INTERVENTIONAt Glenvale State School we believe that continuous student improvement is a shared responsibility of the school community and must include a focus on data-driven, evidence-based intervention. This means that support is directed to different levels of need in response to student achievement data. Prevention, intervention and extension occur in every classroom as teachers cater for all students with explicit teaching episodes, ‘the first line of support’ (Level 1). Intervention and Extension also occur as a collaborative process of targeted teaching for cohorts of students identified in student data analysis (Level 2). In addition, intensive teaching is provided for students at risk of failing to meet year level expectations and who perform below regional and/or national minimum standards (Level 3).

Strong school leadership with a focus on using student data to inform strategic decision-making around intervention is a key to improving and maximising the achievement of all students across the school.

Having high expectations and setting targets leads to improved student achievement when classroom teachers, support staff and school leaders work together to develop a shared understanding of effective intervention practices.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

STUDENT ABSENCES

If students are absent from school either through sickness or other reasons, parents are required to phone 4659 2160, email [email protected] or utilize the school Skoolbag mobile App, to advise the school of the reason for the absence – eg sick, family reasons, holiday, sport etc. The school then knows the reason for their absence on the day the child is away. The phone line is open 24 hours a day. If you cannot phone, email or advise through the App, a note is required (signed by parent) to explain the reason for the absence. Parents will be contacted concerning all unexplained absences.

SKOOLBAG APP

Skoolbag is a mobile App that works through all smart phones and smart devices (eg iPads and tablets). The school uses this App to provide information to parents such as newsletters, alerts and general announcements. It can be installed through the App Store or Play Store on your device (search Glenvale SS). Instructions on installation are available at the office and in enrolment packages.

LATE ARRIVALS/EARLY PICK UP OF STUDENTS

All students need to report to the office if they are late arriving to school (after the 9:00 am bell) A late slip will be issued to give to their teacher for roll recording.

If you need to pick up your child early from school please come to the office for signing out. Your child’s teacher will be contacted and arrangements will be made for your child to meet you at the office.

MEDICATION DURING SCHOOL

If your child requires staff to administer medication to your child at school, please contact the school office in the first instance to discuss your child’s requirements.

Please note, school staff will only administer medication that:

• has been prescribed by a qualified health practitioner (e.g. doctor, dentist)

• is in its original container

• has an attached pharmacy label.

Office staff will ask you to complete and sign Section 1 of the Administration of medication at school record sheet.

School staff will not administer medication that you can buy over-the-counter at chemists and supermarkets (e.g. paracetamol, eye drops, cough syrup) unless it has been prescribed by your child’s qualified health practitioner. For example, the school would administer paracetamol to a student only if it has been prescribed by their dentist to be taken for a short time after dental treatment.

GENERAL SCHOOL PROCEDURESENROLMENTS

During 2013, the education department implemented an enrolment management plan for Glenvale State School to manage the growth in the school population. The enrolment management plan requires the school to prioritise enrolments for students who live within the school catchment zone and if space permits then enrol students from out of the catchment zone.

From 2007, all Queensland State Schools introduced a non-compulsory, full-time Prep year. Students need to turn five years old, on or before 30 June each year, to enrol in the Prep year.

MONEY COLLECTION

Money for school activities (eg. class excursions, interschool sport, swimming lessons) must be sent to the school in the permission/payment envelope provided by the school, with the student’s name, class, activity and amount enclosed. Envelopes are to be handed to the office. Payments can be made in the office by cash, cheque or EFTPOS. Online payments can be processed via BPOINT (details on student’s tax invoices).

STUDENT BANKING

Banking is carried out at the school weekly. Details are provided in the school newsletter.

PARKING

Due to the slope of Glenvale Road and fairly narrow roadway, it is important that parents are very careful when parking or reversing out of parking bays.

• U-turns are illegal anywhere in front of the school. The police have advised that 150m clear vision is needed. This means no car or other vehicles can be in sight. This obviously applies, especially from 8:00 – 9:00am and 2:45 and 3:15pm on school days when there will be lots of traffic.

• No cars are allowed inside the grounds without prior approval. The drop off zone operates from 8:00 – 9:00am and 3:00 – 3:20pm. Please note that there is a 2-minute standing period only that applies to this zone and drivers must remain in their vehicles. All traffic must exit to the left.

• The ‘Look Out’ Stop, Collect and Go operates between 3:00pm – 3:20pm at the drop off zone to ensure quick clearance of vehicles in the zone:

• Pick up children only by the car’s kerb side doors

• If your child/children are not there, go around the block and try again

• As many families as possible are encouraged to use McDougall Street as an alternative drop off point.

SCHOOL CROSSING

While crossing supervisors are on duty (8:00am – 8:50am & 2:55pm – 3:25pm) everyone is asked to cross at the crossing. When adults do this they encourage safe practices for children. The 40km school zone is effective 7:00am – 9:00am and 2:00pm – 4:00pm on school days.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENTPARENTS AND CITIZENS ASSOCIATION

Our active P&C is run by enthusiastic volunteers and its role is to bring together that spirit of community and co-operation for the benefit of our children.

The P&C operates the tuckshop, the uniform shop and an outside school hours care centre (GOSHC), so there are many opportunities for you to become involved in your child’s educational experience at Glenvale. Your child will be so proud to see Mum, Dad, Aunt, Uncle, Grandma or even Grandpa assisting in the classroom, in the Tuckshop or Uniform Shop, at Sport’s Day, with fundraising ... the list goes on. Your presence and involvement in their education sends a message to them that school is important and valued by you.

You are encouraged to come along to the P&C meetings as it is an ideal way to inform yourself on the “goings-on” at the school, to hear about the opportunities for your child, to have your say on P&C services and to put forward your ideas. Everyone with a child enrolled at Glenvale State School is equally entitled to attend and you will be made very welcome. Meetings are generally held on the second Monday of each month, commencing at 6.00pm in the staffroom (located in the administration building). Meeting details will be published in the weekly School Newsletter.

Each term, the P&C conducts at least three fundraisers. Each fundraiser is different, meaning variety for families and there is no expectation on parents/caregivers to take part in all fundraisers. You choose which ones appeal to you.

The money raised from these fundraisers is used to fund those additional resources and facilities required to provide a learning environment where every child at Glenvale State School has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

We encourage you to be involved in the education of your children at whatever level you are comfortable with, for whatever time you can spare and to do it to the best of your capabilities.

TUCKSHOP – Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

Our tuckshop operates on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, opening at 8:00am. Menus are available from the office, the tuckshop or the school website. Please ensure you are choosing items from the correct menu, as we have a “Summer” (term one and four) and “Winter” (term two and three) menu.

All orders must be in at the tuckshop by 8:50am (2nd bell). Online ordering and payment is available at www.flexischools.com. Flexischool orders must be completed by 8:30am on the day that you require the meal, however orders can be placed weeks in advance.

We would like to suggest hot food is ordered for first break as children have a longer time to eat.

If your child has any special dietary requirements, please feel free to discuss this with the Tuckshop Convenor. We are happy to assist wherever possible.

Operation of the tuckshop is run by the P&C and relies on voluntary helpers. If you are interested in assisting the tuckshop either by volunteering in the tuckshop, by donating kitchen items (sandwich bags, paper towel, glad wrap etc.) or making some home bake (recipe supplied by the tuckshop) then please contact the convenor on 07 4659 2123.

SMART CHOICES NUTRITION POLICY

Glenvale State School considers that it is very important to provide our students with smart nutrition options. They are encouraged to make smart choices regarding food and drink. We are committed to setting a good example by promotion and offering healthy eating options.

STUDENTSA common set of beliefs is held about what is acceptable and what is not acceptable with regard to the way students present themselves for school each day. This will enable consistent, safe and equitable dress practices to be followed.

Clothing or accessories that may cause injury while undertaking specific activities cannot be allowed due to health and safety standards.

PURPOSE• To promote pride, unity and a sense of belonging to the Glenvale School community.

• To ensure that all students are dressed in a manner which allows for safe participation in school activities.

• To minimise the pressure on families to provide the financial resources to meet the latest fashion trends.

• To encourage the standard of dress which this school community feels is appropriate.

• To ensure quick and consistent identification of Glenvale students.

GUIDELINES/PROCEDURES

If students are wearing clothing or accessories that may cause injury while undertaking specific activities, they will be asked to change clothes or in the case of jewellery, to take off the inappropriate item.

Items of medical, religious or cultural significance are allowed. Discussion with the school administration will lead to less confusion as to the significance of these items.

These standards apply for all school days unless specific permission has been granted by the school administration.

DRESS STANDARDS• Earrings must be studs or sleepers only.

• Natural hair tints are acceptable. Other hair colouring and styles should be discussed with the principal first.

• Specific activities as outlined in the Education Policy and Procedure Register will necessitate the removal of watches, rings and other jewellery items, the wearing of protective equipment and other safety issues to specific sports.

• Band and choir will require black shoes as part of the formal uniform when representing the school.

• Students must wear the sports uniform when taking part in interschool sport.

• Year 6 shirt may be worn as a team shirt.

• Representative shirts such as West Zone, Darling Downs, Queensland, Rock Eisteddfod etc may be worn. They are not to be worn on Interschool Sports days.

During the course of your children’s school years, you may have cause to make a complaint about an issue with your child’s education. Education Queensland is committed to ensuring that all complaints are dealt with in a fair and equitable manner. There are processes and support structures in place to enable parents/carers and students to work through any issues they may have with Education Queensland provisions. When making a complaint, it is in the best interest of complaint resolution to ensure that you:

• provide complete and factual information in a timely manner

• deliver your complaint in a non-threatening and non-abusive manner and not make frivolous or vexatious complaints or include deliberately false or misleading information

You should be aware that if you are making a complaint about a staff member, that except where prohibited by law, the staff member will be told of the complaint and offered the right of reply. You also have the right to have a support person participate throughout the process.

If your complaint relates to suspected official misconduct or criminal activity then you should make your complaint directly to the Crime and Misconduct Commission (www.cmc.qld.gov.au/) or the Queensland Police Service (www.police.qld.gov.au/).

The following 5-step procedure may assist parents/carers, and school staff to reach an outcome that is in the best interests of the student.

If your complaint is about School Policy, Programs or Procedures then see the principal. Otherwise:

1. Discuss your complaint with the class teacher - If your complaint is with your child’s teacher or relates to an issue concerning your child’s experience at school, make an appointment with that teacher as soon as possible through the school administration. Share the information you have about the problem with the teacher. Give the teacher an opportunity to tell you all he/she knows about the incident or problem. Together, both parent/carer and teacher should then take steps to resolve the problem at this level. The teacher will make a record of the complaint and report your meeting and any outcomes to the school principal.

2. Discuss your complaint with the principal or ask the principal to assist by participating in informal conflict resolution. Where the teacher has been approached as above but the issue remains unresolved make an appointment with the school principal to discuss the issue further. Alternatively, you and the teacher may agree to ask the principal to act as a mediator in informal conflict resolution in an attempt to resolve the problem. If your complaint is related to the school more generally (including issues of school policy or its compliance or non-compliance) you should raise your complaint directly with the principal or his/her delegate. For example, the principal may refer your complaint to a deputy principal or Business Services Manager. The staff member will make a record of your complaint and work with you to resolve the issue.

Complaints to the principal may be lodged in person, by telephone, writing or via electronic format through the “Schools Directory” at www.education.qld.gov.au/schools/directory - select relevant school, then click on the email link.

MAKING A COMPLAINT3. Contact Regional office - If you have discussed the issue with the principal and still feel that your

complaint has not been addressed, you have the right to contact the Assistant Regional Director who is the supervisor of the principal and oversees activities of schools in that particular education district of Queensland. Complaints may be lodged by telephone or in writing. Complaints should be specific in detail, and outline the steps taken to date to resolve the issue. Remember to date the letter, give your full name and address and sign it. The Regional office will make a record of your complaint. Anonymous complaints will only be acted upon if enough information is provided to allow for follow up with the principal. Addresses and telephone numbers of district offices are listed under the heading Education Queensland in the White Pages of your local telephone directory and are also available through the ‘Schools directory’ at www.education.qld.gov.au/schools/directory. When you contact the district office you will be advised that your name and the nature of your issue will be reported back to the principal of your school. Staff at the district office will assist in seeking resolution to the issue.

4. Complaint still not resolved - If, as a parent/carer you feel that your issue has not been resolved through the district office process, you have a further right to make a complaint to the central office of Education Queensland. Parents/carers may choose to progress their complaint in writing to the Deputy Director-General Education Queensland. The Office of Education Queensland will seek to assist with the resolution of your complaint through referral to the Executive Director (Schools) for further action or to another departmental unit for appropriate action. The Office of Education Queensland can be contacted at: Education Queensland, PO Box 15033, CITY EAST, Qld 4002 Tel (07) 3237 0618 or Fax (07) 3221 4953.

5. Seek independent review if, as a complainant you feel that your issue has not been resolved through these formal processes. The Queensland Ombudsman provides an avenue for an independent review of the Department’s decision. The Ombudsman may be contacted: Office of the Ombudsman, Toll Free 1800 068 908 or Fax (07) 3005 7067
