We are anticipating another great season of music at Cadogan Hall this autumn, hosting a wealth of orchestras, ensembles, soloists and performers from home and abroad.Again this year, the very best orchestras and conductors from across the globe are coming to Chelsea for the Zurich International Concert Series, delivering exciting and accessible concerts for everyone. Tickets are selling fast for the first concert in the series on 17 October, the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra with pianist Freddy Kempf. Our resident orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic, are also joined by an array of outstanding artists performing a mixture of classical masterworks and some rarer gems, so please don’t miss their first concert of the new season on 18 September.

We will be launching our new series of Choral at Cadogan which presents some of the best names in British choral singing including The Tallis Scholars, I Fagiolini and Tenebrae, please see page 39 for full details. Lovers of choral music have many treats in store beginning with the amazing Vienna Boys Choir in October, The London Chorus singing Mozart’s Requiem and New Sussex Opera with the rarely-performed Edgar by Puccini.

Contemporary performers this season include comedy from David Sedaris, a special concert with Jane Birkin, folk singer Seth Lakeman, and visits from Joe Jackson, Lambchop and Roddy Frame.

In the run up to Christmas join us for some seasonal celebrations – the English Chamber Orchestra will be getting us in the spirit with their performance of Handel’s Messiah on 2 December and we also have a family Christmas Special with City of London Sinfonia, on 8 December, carols with Goldsmith Choral Union, a Christmas concert with The King’s Singers, Carols and Capers with Maddy Prior and three performances of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s hugely popular Christmas Cracker.

Following its successful concerts at Vienna’s Musikverein in 2008 and 2010, the Messiah Chorus from Japan 2012 makes its first London appearance under its Artistic Director, Hiroshi Koizumi. The New London Orchestra makes a welcome return to Cadogan Hall and a cast of distinguished soloists joins the visitors in their London debut.

The Messiah Chorus from Japan 2012 and its conductor, Hiroshi Koizumi, have asked for entry to this concert to be free of charge as a way to celebrate their visit to London and to showcase one of the great works of the choral repertoire.

To mark the 175th Anniversary of the Royal Medical Benevolent Fund, the Doctors’ Orchestra plays three masterworks of the Classical and early Romantic periods. Made up of talented doctor-musicians from the UK and abroad, the orchestra is joined by the internationally renowned pianist Ronan Magill in a performance of Beethoven’s monumental Emperor Concerto.

The Royal Medical Benevolent Fund is the leading UK charity for doctors, medical students and the families of both. We provide financial support, money, advice and information to the medical profession in times of illness, accident, bereavement or other crisis.

All proceeds of this concert will go towards supporting the work of the RMBF.

A brand-new season of orchestral masterpieces gets off to a dramatic start with Wagner’s exhilarating Overture to The Flying Dutchman, one of his earliest operas. The Violin Concerto by Sibelius is among his best-loved works, combining passionate lyricism with dazzling display. The Concerto finds an exciting exponent in violinist Jack Liebeck, winner of the 2010 Classical BRIT Award for ‘Young British Performer of the Year’.

Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony is one of his most powerful works, charting an intense struggle against the caprices of Fate, culminating in an electrifying finale in which the battle seems to have been won.

One of the most popular and versatile vocalists in Bollywood, Kishore Kumar will always be remembered for his melodious voice lent to songs of varied genres.

He established himself as the number one playback singer from the late 60s and performed some immortal numbers including many classics in the 70s & 80s which was the golden era of the Hindi film industry.

In remembrance of his fantastic achievements, Ketan Kansara and his team of wonderful musicians present an evening of his evergreen, melodious, romantic and peppy numbers. A spectacular tribute.

A colourful programme from Azerbaijan composer Fikret Amirov. Overlooking the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan has influences from Eastern Europe, Western Asia and the Middle East. Fusing Azerbaijani folk-music with powerful orchestration, Amirov transports us to the mysterious Azerbaijani Capriccio and exotic Piano Concerto, which was influenced by Arabic music.

The piano is also featured in Stravinsky’s ballet Petrushka, a mesmerising colourful depiction of an unfortunate Russian puppet.

Acclaimed cellist and conductor Dmitry Yablonsky performs a special birthday recital, joined by pianist Farhad Badalbeyli. Bach’s famous Arioso from his Cantata, BWV.156, is perfectly suited to the resonant, singing sonority of the cello, as is Schumann’s lyrical Adagio from his Fantasy Pieces, Op.73, originally written for clarinet and piano. Yablonsky himself transcribed the striking Violin Sonata by Azerbaijani composer Azer Rzayev. Alongside these arrangements are two powerful sonatas for cello and piano by Brahms and Shostakovich, both works displaying the cello’s capacity for intense drama and heartfelt emotion.

Jane Birkin makes a rare London appearance singing the songs of her late partner Serge Gainsbourg. Jane was Serge’s muse and this special concert is a reinterpretation of his repertoire performed by Jane with a group of very special musicians, with whom she first performed in Japan soon after the earthquake.

Czech conductor Libor Pešek has enjoyed an international career spanning 50 years, and this irresistible programme is the perfect showcase for his celebrated interpretations of Czech music. Smetana’s exuberant Overture to his comic opera, The Bartered Bride, brims with infectious energy, whereas Dvorák’s impassioned Symphony No.7 captures the full emotional spectrum of Czech musical styles. With its profound depth of feeling and masterful orchestral balance, this is considered by many to be Dvorák’s greatest symphonic achievement.

At the heart of this programme, Leon McCawley performs the First Piano Concerto by Polish composer Chopin, whose exquisite writing for the soloist overflows with romance.

Following a critically acclaimed first London concert as Music Director of the Academy, Joshua Bell and the orchestra return to Cadogan Hall in October. In this second London concert together, we continue our exploration of the Beethoven symphonies directed from the leader’s chair. Beethoven’s exquisite First Symphony will be followed by thrilling reinterpretations of well-loved classical repertoire – Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy and Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony in what promises to be a very special evening.

The world famous St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra celebrated its 80th anniversary last year, over 30 years with Chief Conductor Alexander Dmitriev, and we are very proud to have them here to open the Zurich International Concert Series 2012-13.

British pianist – Freddy Kempf – needs no introduction; a firm favourite at Cadogan Hall he plays to sell-out audiences all over the world. His performance of Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini has been described by critics as ‘dynamic’ and ‘brilliant’. Tonight’s concert features City of London Sinfonia Principal Conductor Michael Collins as both conductor and soloist.

Stravinsky’s Octet has become one of his most influential chamber works and was inspired by a dream, as was John Adams’ Grand Pianola Music, in which he found himself driving down Interstate 5, being approached by two of the world’s longest Steinways! His Gnarly Buttons is his concerto for clarinet and small orchestra, originally premiered by Michael Collins, who performs it once again with the orchestra.

Launching their new 2012-13 season Kaleidoscope, the Northern Lights Symphony Orchestra provides an evocative programme dedicated to the Northern hemisphere.

Chosen by Jonathan Pryce CBE as his Discovery of the Year 2009 and described by the Sibelius Society as ‘thrilling’ (Edward Clark, 2011), the NLSO and Principal Conductor Adam Johnson are joined for this concert by award-winning soprano Caroline MacPhie.

It is a very rare treat indeed to be able to hear the whole of Fayrfax’s Missa Tecum principium in one sitting. Newly edited for The Tallis Scholars by Tim Symons, this is one of the most substantial and virtuoso mass-settings of the entire period. Written for Christmas, the Missa Tecum principium presents its chant 12 times, each with a different rhythm, culminating in the most perfectly beautiful Agnus Dei in the whole repertoire. In between these colossal movements of Fayrfax the choir will sing something more compact, but just as intense, in the two Lamentations of Tallis.

A concert in celebration of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, with music by composers who have written for the monarchy. The Swingle Singers

For five decades, the unmistakable sound of ‘Swingle singing’ has defined the art form: virtuosic vocal agility and blend demonstrated by their signature close-microphone technique, combined with high-level entertainment that has thrilled audiences around the globe. The Swingle Singers are an international a cappella phenomenon. Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances, from his opera Prince Igor, are amongst his most famous pieces, full of exotic melodies and vibrant orchestration. Cellist Dimitri Maslennikov has a special affinity for Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, a delightful set of variations on an elegant theme inspired by Mozart.

While living in America, Czech composer Dvorák was enchanted by the music he heard there, declaring: ‘These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are the folk songs of America’. For his Ninth Symphony, Dvorák emulated this style, while also recalling the music of his homeland. The result is his most popular symphony, its famous Largo just one of many glorious moments.

These two concerts are part of Joe’s European tour to promote his new album The Duke. The show will consist of music from the album (Joe’s unique interpretations of Duke Ellington classics) and original songs taken from throughout Joe’s own 30-year writing and recording career, from Look Sharp to Rain.

The six-piece ensemble – called The Bigger Band to set it apart from the small bands Joe has toured with over the last several years – features acclaimed jazz violinist Regina Carter, who made an important contribution to the album. Two former JJ band members will also be returning: percussionist Sue Hadjopoulos and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Allison Cornell. The remaining members are Jesse Murphy (bass, vocals, and tuba), Adam Rogers (guitar) and Nate Smith (drums).

The show will run for approximately two hours and there will be no opening act.

He may have been overshadowed by Wagner, but without Weber the history of opera would be very different. Weber’s Der Freischütz, with its atmospheric Overture, is considered the first important German Romantic opera – and had a huge impact on Wagner himself.

Brahms and Wagner were rivals, splitting the musical world with their different approaches to composition, yet few can now resist the sunny charm of the Violin Concerto by Brahms. With its lyrical opening movement, exquisite, singing Adagio and vigorous finale, the Concerto is an ideal showcase for the talents of Chloë Hanslip.

Dvorák’s Eighth Symphony is one of his most joyous, full of Bohemian folk-tunes and orchestral colour.

Mick’s career spans five decades and takes in some of the most important names in rock ‘n’ roll history. After standing in for Eric Clapton at a Bluesbreakers’ gig a year later John Mayall was looking for a guitarist and at only 17 Mick was touring with Mayall’s legendary band. From there he became a member of The Rolling Stones, where he stayed for half a decade, contributing his trademark vibrato slide and song writing skills to numerous hit albums including Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street.

In his solo career Mick has worked on soundtracks and film scores, appeared with Mike Oldfield and recorded with Bob Dylan. In 1979 he released his first solo material, an album mixing rock, jazz and Latin-flavoured blues and he continued touring, performing again with John Mayall and Eric Clapton and recording with The Rolling Stones. Now playing with a line-up of long-time friends and musicians this is a concert you do not want to miss.

Artistic director and founder of the Orchestra Musica Romantica (OMR), Jörg Hammann, will conduct the orchestra’s world-premier performance. A member of the London Symphony Orchestra himself he brings along his colleague and LSO’s assistant leader Tomo Keller who will star in Mozart’s Violin Concerto. The OMR is made up of musicians from most major London orchestras and students from various music colleges in London. This ‘fusion’ orchestra dedicates this performance to a good cause and all proceeds will go to a charity which will be announced later.

From an early age, Ralph began his career by hitch-hiking around Europe with his guitar, emulating his hero Woody Guthrie. In the mid 60s he worked at a Cornish campsite, being maintenance man by day, entertainer by night, where he graced the stage at the ‘Folk Cottage’, a tiny barn in Cornwall that hosted an impromptu club, before eventually settling on the ‘streets of London’. During this period, Nick Drake’s last public performance was supporting Ralph at Epsom college.

It was in 1969 that Ralph came to widespread attention though, thanks to an appearance at the Cambridge Folk Festival where all the audience sang along to the now classic anthem Streets Of London, thus launching a long term career penning and performing beautiful acoustic and folk politically conscious songs.

Original Manfred Mann members Paul Jones, Mike Hugg and Tom McGuinness, and former member Mike d’Abo, are joined by Rob Townsend, Marcus Cliffe and Simon Currie as the exciting new line-up of The Manfreds, featuring BOTH lead singers from the 1960s band.

Since Manfred Mann formed in 1962, they have firmly secured their place in the history books of British popular and R&B music. Understandable considering the number of top ten hits they have had throughout the world. The band re-formed as The Manfreds in 1991.

This concert features all their greatest hits including: 5-4-3-2-1, Just Like A Woman, Do Wah Diddy, Semi Detached Suburban Mr James, Sha La La, Ha! Ha! Said the Clown, Come Tomorrow, The Mighty Quinn, If You Gotta Go, Go Now, My Name is Jack, The One in the Middle (E.P.), Fox on the Run, Pretty Flamingo, Ragamuffin Man, plus their individual hits.

This concert will help mark the 30th Anniversary of Helen & Douglas House, the world’s first children’s hospice.

Roddy, whose band Aztec Camera’s debut, High Land, Hard Rain, catapulted him to international stardom when he was just 19, returns to Cadogan Hall for a Christmas show on December 11th. His career as a solo artist has earned him an enduring reputation as one of the finest songwriters of the last 30 years. Having played three festivals in the autumn Roddy comes back to Cadogan Hall for his only UK theatre date in 2012, and his special one-man acoustic show.

Expect to hear the hits plus songs from his critically acclaimed solo albums along with newer material.

Getting to Cadogan Hall

The easiest way to travel to Cadogan Hall is by public transport. Located two minutes walk from Sloane Square Tube, served by District and Circle lines, just one stop from Victoria station which has both mainline and additional Tube connections.

Sloane Square Underground Two minutes walk Upon exiting Sloane Square Station, turn immediately right, passing the Royal Court Theatre. (You will see Cadogan Hall’s tower immediately before you). Cross over Cliveden Place and walk up Sedding Street to the Hall.

Bus Sloane Street one minute walk Frequent bus services stop in Sloane Square and neighbouring streets including King’s Road, Sloane Street and Lower Sloane Street. Bus services include numbers 11, 19, 22, 137, 211, 319, 360 and c1.

Taxi Rank Sloane Square one minute walk Taxis are numerous in the area and there is a taxi rank located on Sloane Square opposite the Underground Station.

Parking A limited number of bays are available on Sloane Terrace, Wilbraham Place and Sedding Street after 6.30pm.

AccessibilityFree companion / Assistance scheme Cadogan Hall has a range of services to assist disabled customers including provision for wheelchair users in the stalls. Companions of disabled customers are entitled to a free seat when assisting disabled customers at Cadogan Hall. Please note that companion seats not sold 48 hours prior to any given performance will be released for general sale.

Wheelchair users If you use a wheelchair and wish to transfer to a seat, we regret we may not be able to provide a member of staff to help you physically. However, we will arrange for your wheelchair to be taken away and stored. A lift is located to the right once inside the Box Office reception allowing access to a lowered Box Office counter. Foyer areas are on the same level as the Box Office and the foyer bar (Oakley Room) is accessed via a wide access lift. Seats within the stalls are accessed via a wide lift as are adapted toilet facilities.

The Gallery Please note the lift provides access to all levels except the gallery seating areas. Gallery seating can only be accessed via the main stairwell. When travelling to and from the gallery seating areas please allow sufficient time in order to be seated at an appropriate time.

Customers with hearing requirements The Box Office counter is fitted with a loop system to aid customers with any hearing impairment. The auditorium is fitted with an infra-red amplification system. This is not the same as a Loop System so switching your hearing aid to ‘T’ is not sufficient. You will need to use an amplification aid.

Customers with sight impairment Guide dogs are welcome to access the hall and auditorium but please do let us know prior to arriving at the hall so we may make any special arrangements if necessary. We produce CD versions of this brochure. To request a free copy please call the Box Office and ask to be added to our regular lists. ‘Touch / Familiarisation’ tours can be arranged and we have unisex accessible toilets on all levels except the Gallery.
