Sibelius Rakastava Elgar Cello Concerto Shostakovich Two Pieces for String Octet Shostakovich Chamber Symphony

Alexey Stadler cello Vladimir Ashkenazy conductor

There’s an abundance of passion and intensity in Vladimir Ashkenazy’s programme. At its heart lies Elgar’s searing Cello Concerto: written in the aftermath of the First World War, it’s a potent elegy for a lost age. Making his UK concerto debut is the astoundingly gifted Russian cellist Alexey Stadler.

Like Shostakovich, Vladimir Ashkenazy experienced at first hand the life of an artist in the Soviet Union. Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony is an orchestration of his tragic Eighth Quartet, written at white heat and dedicated to ‘the victims of fascism and war’.

Sibelius’ Rakastava (The Lover) is a real rarity but no less compelling for all that, abounding in brooding atmosphere.

5. 4. 3. 2. 1. It’s The Manfreds sees original Manfred Mann members Paul Jones, Mike Hugg and Tom McGuinness together with Rob Townsend, Marcus Cliffe and Simon Currie reunite with very special guest and former member Mike d’Abo.

After the successful reunion in 1991, The Manfreds have toured extensively, received standing ovations nationwide and recently celebrated their 50th anniversary.

Now they are back to inject all of the enthusiasm back into their timeless anthems including Do Wah Diddy Diddy, 5-4-3-2-1, Mighty Quinn, Pretty Flamingo and many more!

Glinka Ruslan and Lyudmila Overture Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2 Shostakovich Symphony No. 5

Alessio Bax piano Alexander Shelley conductor

Encompassing the hallmark romanticism of the 19th century and the political angst of the Soviet Union, this all-Russian programme features some of the most distinctive works in the classical repertoire. The ebullience of the popular Overture to Glinka’s five-act Ruslan and Lyudmila is contrasted with Rachmaninov’s lavish Piano Concerto No. 2, performed by Italian pianist Alessio Bax.

Shostakovich’s imposing Symphony No. 5 was completed just a few years before the outbreak of World War Two, at a time when Soviet composers were pressured to conform to requisites set by the authorities; the blend of satire and submission has intrigued audiences ever since its conception, while the triumphant Finale continues to astound to this day.

Jörg Widmann Ikarische Klage (London premiere) Mozart Clarinet Concerto Mozart Symphony No. 41 (Jupiter)

Jörg Widmann clarinet/conductor

One of the world’s great musical multi-taskers, the charismatic Jörg Widmann is renowned as a composer, clarinet soloist and conductor. He takes on all three roles in this concert, which features music by another multi-talented musician, Mozart.

We open with Widmann conducting the London premiere of his Ikarische Klage (Icarus’ Lament) the ultimate cautionary tale of ambition outstripping ability.

Widmann then turns soloist in Mozart’s sublime Clarinet Concerto, and ends the evening conducting the LCO in Mozart’s ebulliently life-affirming final symphony, the Jupiter.

Robert Davidovici violin Grzegorz Nowak conductor

On the eve before Valentine’s Day, Grzegorz Nowak returns to perform stellar extracts from ballet and opera – from the unequivocal classical form of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro to Bizet’s tragic Carmen. Violinist Robert Davidovici joins the orchestra to perform Mendelssohn’s celebrated Violin Concerto, first premiered in 1845 by the Leader of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Ferdinand David. Philippe Graffin violin Jean-Jacques Kantorow conductor

The ECO is conducted by Jean-Jacques Kantorow and joined by violinist Phillipe Graffin, to give the world premiere of Peter Fribbins’ Violin Concerto.

Mozart’s famous Symphony No. 31 (Paris), is one of the grandest, most thrilling sounds Mozart ever made from an orchestra.

Une nuit à Lisbonne, is a delightful evocation of a Portuguese evening through woodwind solos and a charming central interlude for strings alone.

Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin – a suite originally for solo piano, which is composed in six movements; each movement dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer who had died fighting in World War I, completes the programme.

Verdi Rigoletto

Featuring an impressive cast and accompanied by a large live orchestra of over 30 musicians.

After last year’s season of successful performances of Carmen and La Traviata, The Russian State Ballet and Opera House is back with another world-class opera, Rigoletto – a tragic tale of misunderstanding, revenge and sacrifice.

Rigoletto is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi, set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, and based on the play Le Roi s’amuse by Victor Hugo.

The opera includes the Duke’s much loved cynical aria La donna e mobile.

This is an opportunity for opera lovers to see Rigoletto as never before with an established and long standing Russian theatre that continues to grow on the international stage and win awards in the field of opera and ballet.

Companions of disabled customers are entitled to a free seat when assisting disabled customers at Cadogan Hall. Please note that companion seats not sold 48 hours prior to any given performance will be released for general sale.

Wheelchair usersIf you use a wheelchair and wish to transfer to a seat, we regret we may not be able to provide a member of staff to help you physically. However, we will arrange for your wheelchair to be taken away and stored. A lift is located to the right once inside the Box Office reception allowing access to a lowered Box Office counter. Foyer areas are on the same level as the Box Office and the foyer bar (Oakley Room) is accessed via a wide access lift. Seats within the stalls are accessed via a wide lift as are adapted toilet facilities.

The GalleryPlease note the lift provides access to all levels except the gallery seating areas. Gallery seating can only be accessed via the main stairwell. When travelling to and from the gallery seating areas please allow sufficient time in order to be seated at an appropriate time.

Customers with hearing requirementsThe Box Office counter is fitted with a loop system to aid customers with any hearing impairment. The auditorium is fitted with an infra-red amplification system. This is not the same as a Loop System so switching your hearing aid to ‘T’ is not sufficient. You will need to use an amplification aid.

Customers with sight impairmentGuide dogs are welcome to access the hall and auditorium but please do let us know prior to arriving at the hall so we may make any special arrangements if necessary. We produce CD versions of this brochure. To request a free copy please call the Box Office and ask to be added to our regular lists. ‘Touch / Familiarisation’ tours can be arranged and we have unisex accessible toilets on all levels except the Gallery.
