PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY The curriculum in Millikan’s Performing Arts Academy is designed to provide advanced instruction in the performing arts disciplines. Students selected for the Academy must maintain a grade point average of 2.0 to participate. They are also eligible for inclusion in the SAS program based on academic qualifications. Entrance is by assessment through the Academy application process. Acceptance into the Academy is not a permit to enroll in the school. Students must meet Millikan ‘s residential requirements or secure a valid permit for enrollment. Program Courses 6th Grade

Drama Orchestra * Band * Choir Cinema**

6th grade is a foundational year. Performances are primarily in class with selected opportunities for performance in front of an audience. Dance requirements: Magnet students will take a semester of cultural/social dance and one semester of studio dance. Academy students will take a yearlong class of studio dance. *At the discretion of the director. 6th grade students with advanced instrumental music training may be placed in any advanced instrumental class. **Cinematic Arts students accepted into magnet may be allowed coursework in film

Millikan was named a “NATIONAL SCHOOL TO WATCH” and a “CALIFORNIA DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL.” Ranking as one of LAUSD’S top five middle schools, it is a high performing educational environment where passionate and committed teachers respond to the creative and developmental needs of all students. Millikan staff and families participate together in numerous community outreach activities, cultural fairs and performing arts festivals.

Drama: Intro, Lab, and Production Costume Design Musical Theatre Workshop Band: Concert, jazz Strings Percussion Ensemble Afro-Caribbean Drumming Choir: Intro, Chamber, and Advanced Dance: Cultural, Studio, Company Cinematic Arts Students are placed in classes in 7th and 8th grade either by audition or teacher discretion. Dance requirements: Students have the choice of a wide range of dance classes. Instrumental and Cinematic Arts students may take dance if space allows.

Performing Arts Academy application and placement assessments There must be a completed application on file by the day of the performing arts assessment.

Drama/Dance/Choir Assessments Students need to prepare the following: -A one-minute memorized monologue -An age appropriate one minute classical or Broadway song selection with at least an octave range. Singing with CD accompaniment is acceptable -Students may be asked to sing simple scales Students will be taught a dance combination

Instrumental Assessments Students need to prepare: -A one-minute performance on the desired instrument -Scales or other exercises that demonstrate proficiency -Sight-reading or music analysis may be requested *Piano and guitar lessons are NOT offered at Millikan. Advanced pianists and guitarists will have opportunities to perform in Jazz homeroom.
