• Kidneys are the vital organs of human body. They cleanse the toxins from the body and ensure healthy blood flow to all organs of the body. Sometimes when kidneys fail, the only option would be to transplant them.

• There are many forms of Kidney transplantation techniques available, like transplantation of kidney from a live donor who is preferably a blood relative which ensures perfect match or harvesting a kidney through swap process.

• A swap transplant is a process wherein it allows the donor to donate a kidney to another unrelated recipient while at the same time his relative receives a kidney from the recipient’s relative, which is prevalent in many hospitals.

• A cadaver transplant is done from a brain dead person, once the relatives give consent for the same. A person may become brain-dead due to various reasons such as accident or any other ailment; the relatives might be willing to harvest his organs. After taking the necessary approvals in place the kidney from the brain dead person is harvested and the person who requires the kidney transplant is prepared for the surgery.

Our body is a machine subject to wear and tear. Kidneys usually start mal-functioning due reasons such as:•Alcohol abuse•Uncontrolled hyper tension or diabetes•Drugs or medications that may have adverse effect on kidneys•Polycystic kidneysThese factors contribute to toxins not being filtered out of our bodies, which mean we need to go in for dialysis or dilatation treatment based on the severity of the problem.

Procedure:• The harvested kidney is placed in the pelvis area and not in the back. The blood artery and vein which contain the blood

flow are connected to the new kidney in the pelvis area. • The urethra in the bladder is connected to the pelvis through a small incision. This procedure usually lasts from two to three

hours. • After the transplantation is done the patient is placed under observation and monitoring in the recovery room.• At KIMS, we ensure that you start walking in 12 to 24 hours. The recovery period is usually three to four weeks. The newly

transplanted kidney starts functioning sometimes after a week or two. This condition is often referred to as “sleepy kidney” or acute tubular necrosis in such cases extended dialysis may be required, until the transplanted kidney starts functioning.

• An immunosuppressant is administered to prevent our body from rejecting the newly transplanted kidney, which may cause cancer in very rare cases depending upon the prognosis of the patient. The patient can return to routine work usually a month after the surgery, and also strict adherence to diet restrictions must be followed to prevent any relapses.
