1.0 Introduction:
2.0 Assumptions:
3.0 Loadings:
Cable self weight (each) = 5.20 kg/m
Overall dia. of cable = 41.70 mm
Unistrut - P53 Cable tray (TUHLT300/15) = 10.59 kg/m
Cable tray useable area = 14480
Number of cables = ROUND( 14480/(3.14/4*41.70^2),0)-3 = 8 cables
Unistrut - P5 Channel (P1000) = 2.88 kg/m
Weight of cables = 41.60 kg/m
Total weight = 41.60+ 2.88+ 10.59 = 55.07 kg/m
Total weight = 55.07+0.1*( 10.59+ 2.88) (assume 10% for connections)
= 56.42 kg/m
Extracts from Unistrut catalogue - page 53
4.0 Cable Tray & Channel - checks
Applied load on cable tray = 56.42*9.81
= 553.5 N/m (unfactored)
= 553.5*1.4 = 774.8 N/m (factored)
Unistrut P-58 Capacity of cable tray = 800.0 N/m > 774.8 N/m OK
(4 core 95mm2 nominal area of conductor)
mm2
These calculations have been carried out for the cable management attached to the brickwork/blockwork on the Wolverhampton project.
1 - Unistrut arrangment to be used for the purpose. 2 - Max. number of cables = 11 (4 core 95mm2 nominal area of conductor)3 - Cable tray to be in vertical position.

Spacing between channels = 1.50 m
Assumed Length of channel, L = 500 mm
Applied load on channel = 56.42*1.50*9.81/1000
= 0.83 kN (unfactored)
= 0.83*1.4 = 1.16 N/m (factored)
Unistrut - P5 Capacity of cable tray = 8.672 kN > 1.16 kN OK
5.0 Connections
5.1 Connection between cable tray & channel
Extract from Unistrut catalogue - page 16
Max. applied load to connection = 0.83 kN
Capacity of PNP12 = 8.82 kN > 0.83 kN OK

5.1 Connection between channel & brickwork/blockwork
Extract from Unistrut catalogue - page 35
Max. applied load to connection = 0.83 kN
Capacity of EAM16 = 3.70 kN* > 0.83 kN OK
Note: EAM16 embedment to avoid mortar layer.
*Loading capacity in the table is based on concrete as base material. For brickwork assumed half of the capacity from the table.
