2 Identifying subracks, connectors and cables
2.1 Numbering system of the subrack shelves and cable con-nectors
The positions of all connectors mentioned in this document are numbered by the co-
ordinate system introduced here. The equipment cabinets, subrack positions, and cable
connectors in the subracks have individual co-ordinate systems to facilitate the installa-
tion of subracks and the connection of cables.
The cabinet's subrack positions are assigned with numbers from 1 to 4 from the top
down. The subrack is identified by a sticker attached to its upper left corner.
Each subrack has twenty slots for plug-in units. The subracks are marked with the
position numbers of the plug-in units. Seen from the front, each subrack includes
eighteen slots dimensioned for full-height plug-in units, numbered from 1 to 18 from leftto right. The last two slots are for two half-height plug-in units located one on top of the
other. The upper slot is numbered 19 and the lower one 38.

2.1.1 Locking pegs
Each connector is provided with locking devices (for example locking pegs or screws)
that fasten the cable connector securely to the subrack.
The connector's locking pegs are placed in the same positions in each subrack type,
regardless of the subrack's position in a given cabinet. If the subrack includes supple-
mentary locking pegs, they can be used as spare parts.

2.2 Categories of cables
The cabling of an exchange consists of interconnection cables (intermediate cables)
and site cables (outgoing cables) as described below.
2.2.1 Interconnection cables
The interconnection cables comprise all the cables inside each cabinet and between the
cabinets which form a single exchange. The interconnection cables are cut to length and
equipped with connectors. They include:
• power distribution cables
• ATM connection cables
• Hardware Management Bus (HMS) cables
• synchronisation and timing cables
• SCSI cables between storage units and their master units
• LAN/Ethernet cables
Intracabinet cables
The interconnection cables between different subracks located in the same cabinet run
from one subrack to another along the walls and cabling shelves of the cabinet. These
cables are delivered completely installed in the cabinets.
Intercabinet cables
The interconnection cables running between different cabinets are led directly from one
cabinet to another on cable shelves located behind the cabinets. These cables must be
installed at the site. The interconnection cables are delivered as prefabricated cable
sets.
2.2.2 Site cables
The site (outgoing) cables are all the cables that leave the exchange. They include:
• trunk circuit cables from the network interfaces
• power supply cables
• grounding cables
• I/O cables
• TCP/IP cables to the Network Management system
The site cables are connected directly to the plug-in units, or to connector panels located
at the rear of the cabinets, or to the connectors panels in the cabling cabinet. These
cables must be installed at the site.
The site cables can be routed to the environment through the opening at the bottom
(raised floor installations) or top plate (normal installation) of the EC216. These cables
must be installed at the site.
All the cables entering the cabinet(s), except for the DC power feed cables, must have
a shield or protective wires which are grounded to the frame of the exchange at the con-
nectors in the cabinets.
Note that the site cables are not delivered in sets, but they must be ordered separately.
The site cables are designed for each delivery and therefore they vary in length depend-
ing on the delivery. They are not included in the standard documentation.

Identifying subracks, connectors and cables
2.3 Identifying cables
The equipping reference is located on the Cable Identification Label (marked b) in Figure
Example of marking system for the cables, below).
The first part of the equipping reference specifies the cable list where the cable is men-
tioned. The second part gives the sequence number within that list.
The equipping reference of the cables is based on the cabinet (type) name in which the
cable is connected. There are two main groups:
1. Cables whose both ends are connected in the same cabinet (intracabinet
cables).
The equipping information is expressed: [Cabinet type_sequence number]. ”CA_123”.
There may be several identical cables of this type in a single Network Element, but only
one within the same cabinet.
2. Cables which originate from one cabinet and end in another (intercabinetcables).
The equipping information is expressed: [Cabinet type, cabinet index_ sequence num-
ber].”CBn_123”. There may be only one of each individual cable of this type in a single
Network Element.
In the RNC, all intercabinet cables connect from RNBC to RNAC.
The cabinet where the cable begins (starts in) determines the [cabinet type, cabinet
index] part of the equipping reference.

The cables are listed in tables. Each cable has its individual number. This number and
the address of both ends of the cable are given. Both the name of the functional unit to
which the end of the cable is connected and its co-ordinate are given in a table. The
columns of the table are used as follows:

document.
Equip. No. CABLE FROM CABLE TO
FU Conn. FU Conn. Type Use Notes
Equip. No. The equipping number is the individual number of the cable. Both ends of the cable
bear a label with this number on it.
CABLE FROM
(RNBC)
In case of intercabinet cabling, the text CABLE FROM RNBC indicates that the cable
originates from the RNBC cabinet.
CABLE TO
(RNAC)
In case of intercabinet cabling, the text CABLE TO RNAC indicates that the cable ends
in the RNAC cabinet.
FU These columns give the name of the functional unit housed in the subrack where the
ends of the cable connect to. For example MXU.
Conn.(ector) These columns give the co-ordinates of the connectors where the ends of the cable
are connected.
Type The column gives the type (the first three letters) and length of the cable (the following
two or three numbers) in decimetres (10 cm), or if marked with a C, in centimetres. For
instance, CHA010 is a cable of CHA type which is 100 cm long.
Use The column gives the type of signal carried by the cable, for example PDH line.
Notes This column is for additional information.

Physical cable equipping positions and SW port con-nection coordinates
6 Physical cable equipping positions and SW
port connection coordinates
This section shows the physical cable equipping positions in the subrack and the corre-sponding SW port connection coordinates, used in hardware configuration manage-
ment.
The cable connection coordinates are needed when creating internal port connections
between plug-in units' ports. For more information, see Creating connection descriptions
in Hardware Configuration Management .
For example, for a cable installed in position 1.0B 1.4A, the port connection coordinate
in hardware configuration management (WF commands) is B76. See also figure Nota-
tions used in table Physical cable equipping positions and corresponding SW port con-
nection coordinates.
