Jackie Allen (Costume Crew Chief) is excited to lead up the Costume Crew for Cabaret. She has been on the Costume Crew for ICCT's Annie and Oklahoma, performed onstage in the New Play Festival, done the sound for Dreamwell's Innocence, and Stage Managed for All In A Day. Onstage or off, she enjoys every aspect of theatre.

Katie Boothroyd (Kit Kat Girl) is a sophomore at the University of Iowa and a double major in Theatre Arts & English. This is her first production with ICCT, and she is thrilled to a part of this amazing cast. She is originally from Waukee, Iowa. Some of her favorite past productions include Joseph as the narrator and Dancing at Lughnasa as Chris. She would like to thank her family for being so supportive and the entire cast and crew for being so wunderbar! Enjoy the show!

Fawn Boston-Halter (Choreographer/Kit Kat Girl) studied at the University of Iowa, earning degrees in Dance & Elementary Education. She was last on stage performing in City Circle’s production of Guys and Dolls. Fawn has previously choreographed the high school shows Seussical, the Musical and Annie at Clear Creek Amana, as well as IC-CT’s production of The Fantasticks, and City Circle Acting’s production of Urinetown. Outside of theater, Fawn is a first grade teacher at Clear Creek Elementary, and teaches Zumba at Core Fitness and Studio 889. Fawn is so proud of how hard the cast has worked!

Carl Brown (Ernst Ludwig) is excited to be a part of Cabaret. He has appeared previously with ICCT in Annie (ensemble), The Royal Family (Jo, the butler) and Oklahoma! (ensemble). A long time ago, he performed in Anything Goes, Fiddler on the Roof, The Sound of Music, and West Side Story. When not at rehearsal, Carl counts beans at Integrated DNA Technologies, and tries to keep his kids, Victor and Helena, out of trouble. Thanks to all for coming to see the show, and hopefully you’ll enjoy watching it as much as we'll enjoy putting it on for you.

Ted Brown (Chorus) is extremely happy to be in Iowa City Community Theatre’s production of Cabaret. This is Ted's first show with ICCT and he has enjoyed it immensely. Some of his recent roles include: Buzz in Rebel Without A Cause and Sonny LaTierri in Grease. Ted is currently a senior at Regina High School and he hopes to attend a college for musical theatre/theatre/anything to do with theatre.

Andrew Burgess (Chorus) is a 7th grader at Northwest Junior High. He has studied voice with Nancy MacFarlane and Shari Rhodes, piano with Rene Lecuona, and violin with Allen Ohmes. He would like to thank his teachers for all their support, and ICCT’s staff, sponsors, volunteers, and audience for this opportunity. He recently made his orchestral debut on piano, and has performed roles in The Turn of the Screw, Dido and an Aeneas, La Bohème, and Our Town. He enjoys writing, mountain climbing, music composition, skiing, and is an avid drummer looking to join a Led Zeppelin tribute band.

Christopher Carpenter (Herr Schultz) made his ICCT debut in Fiddler on the Roof in 1993. Most recently he has appeared as Psuedolus in A Fun-ny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Vandergelder in Hello Dol-ly, Alfie Dolittle in My Fair Lady, and Horton in Seussical, The Musical. By day he works at Iowa Book in downtown Iowa City. When he isn't treading the boards he enjoys cuddling his dog, obsessively hoarding DVDs, and pursuing his ultimate goal of collecting every original cast album ever recorded.

Nicole DeSalle (Production Assistant) is thrilled to have had the opportunity to help bring the Weimar Republic to the Barn. She has appeared onstage in Annie (Ensemble), The Royal Family (Julie Cavendish), and Oklahoma! (Aunt Eller). She has also been cast as Lady Montague in ICCT's upcoming production of Romeo & Juliet. Best of luck to the entire cast, especially Carl, her favorite Nazi and dearest friend.

Christian Drollinger (Rehearsal/Show pianist) is thrilled to be working with ICCT again! You may have seen him (or not) recently behind the scenes in City Circle's Urinetown, and Shrek, as the rehearsal and show pianist. He's had a fun time working with this cast, and hopes you all enjoy the show, and remember that life is a cabaret!

Emily Duncan (Kit Kat Girl/Flute) is thrilled to be a part of a show where no one can really tell if she forgets her bloomers or not. This is her first ICCT show. Past credits include Rosie in Bye Bye Birdie and Consuela in West Side Story. Thanks to the directors, crew, and cast for making this such a wonderful experience!

Wes Habley (Musical Director) is in his third stint as musical director at ICCT this year. With Annie and Oklahoma to his credit, Wes is challenged to direct & play in the Kit Kat Club Band supporting a perfectly marvelous cast. Wes also handled musical direction for City Circle’s production of Shrek in June. Wes retired from ACT and TO his long time avocation, music. In addition to musical direction, Wes plays in the Czech Plus Pol-ka Band, the Iowa City Community Band, and the Dixieland band, Big Band, and woodwind ensemble at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.

Sydney Hayes (Kit Kat Girl/Chorus) is thrilled to be dancing for everyone as a sexy nightclub gal. A senior at the University of Iowa, Sydney studies theatre performance and entrepreneurship. She last appeared on the Coralville stage with City Circle’s production of Urinetown. She thanks everyone involved with the show for their great work and her loving friends and family for pushing her toward her dream.

Elijah Jones (Victor/Sailor #3) is happy to be part of ICCT's production of Cabaret. His recent credits include Hysterium in City Circle's Forum, and King Sextimus in Once Upon A Mattress. He would like to thank Josh Sazon for the opportunity to be a part of this show.

MEET THE CAST AND CREW Robert Kemp (Emcee) previously appeared with WOB's Miss Saigon (Chris) and Cabaret (Cliff), making this his second production of Cabaret. Previous local appearances include White Christmas, Urinetown, A Christmas Carol, and The Drowsy Chaperone. Robert is a member of the Peak agency in Des Moines and an Actor's Equity Candidate. He enjoys performing on TV, Film, and Radio when not on stage.

Rich LeMay (Chorus) is very excited to be a part of Cabaret after being in ICCT's Oklahoma! last year. You might remember him from such shows as Guys & Dolls and Carousel. A graduate from The U of I, Rich plans to pursue a career in clinical psychology after attending graduate school. When not gracing the stage, or prepping for school, you can find him serv-ing customers at The Mill.

Linda Merritt (Fraulein Schneider) has acted in 3 or 4 shows in Iowa each year, but has not appeared at ICCT since 1997's Sweeney Todd. Her most recent roles include Dotty in Waterloo's production of Noises Off and Helga in Cedar Falls' staging of Deathtrap. Her son Rob has been in Cabaret MANY times, and he encouraged her to audition. Linda lives in Cedar Rapids with her husband Rich and their 4 cats. By day, Linda works as a bankruptcy lawyer in Cedar Rapids.

Monty (Max) owner of his own salon, he was forced into this role so no one else would have to do a bit part. He's backstage right now furiously doing the Kit Kat Girls hair and making sure the drag queen's wig is up to par.

Valerie Moody (Kit Kat Girl Understudy) studied at Truman State University where she earned a BS degree in Psychology. She moved to Iowa City in 2010 to pursue a Master’s Degree in Educational Measurement and Statistics from the University of Iowa. The last time Valerie graced the stage, she danced in Bye Bye Birdie at Whitecliff Summer Playhouse in Crestwood, MO. Since then, Valerie has pursued her love of dance by teaching hip hop classes and going to all of the Zumba classes she can find! Outside of the theater, Valerie is an evaluation coordinator at the University of Iowa. She is just thrilled to be able to break from the world of academia to "shake her groove thing" in Cabaret!

Jocko Motyko (Sailor #2) makes his acting comeback after a 4 year absence from the stage. This role is perhaps Jocko's most important work since playing the emotionally demanding Logger #3 in The Story of Paul Bunyan. Off-stage, Jocko lives in Tiffin where he dreams of laying out on the beaches of Florida, or until winter sets in and he has to take these dreams indoors.

Rich Riggleman (Stage Manager/Set Designer) is a retired language arts teacher from Western Iowa, where he directed or acted in over 30 shows with Midwestern Players, the community theatre in Denison. Since moving to Iowa City he has worked on 26 plays at ICCT including directing Crimes of the Heart and Last of the Red Hot Lovers. Rich has done 24 productions at Dreamwell, including directing Playboy of the Western World. He has also worked with City Circle and Catalyst community theatres.

Eliza Sanders (Kit Kat Girl) is thrilled to be part of her third ICCT production, after Annie and Oklahoma! Outside of Hall A, she is hard at work on a dissertation for a Ph.D. in English at the University of Iowa, and fits in teaching undergraduate literature courses somehow. She's especially enjoyed spending so much time with the other wonderful Kit Kat girls over the past few weeks, and would like to thank Fawn for the awesome dances, Josh for casting her, and her parents and friends for listening to her gush about costumes and dance moves so much.

Josh Sazon (Director) has been known to occasionally find himself working on various productions in the area.

Ashley Sorensen (Sally Bowles) is simply ecstatic to be playing the role of Sally! She would like to thank everyone involved in the production for being such a fun and welcoming group. She would also like to thank her family and friends for their undying support without which she wouldn't have the gusto to play Sally. Ashley is a senior double major at the U of I studying Theatre and French and plans on pursuing a career in acting after graduation this spring. She most recently has been involved with several student film projects, the U of I gallery Mémoire, and the 10 Minute Play Festival. Enjoy the show, darlings!

Nate Sullivan (Cliff Bradshaw) is just so utterly grateful to have had a chance to work on this, his first musical. He'd like to thank Josh for the opportunity, the rest of the cast and crew for their hard work and his wife for her support. Nate appeared in last season's production of The Royal Family with ICCT as well as the premiere of The Aurora Project at the University of Iowa's New Play Festival.

Olivia Symmonds (Kit Kat Girl/Chorus) has had a ball being in Cabaret! She is so thankful to continue to work in community theater; recent productions include Oklahoma! with ICCT, as well as RENT and Shrek: The Musical with City Circle. Olivia is a recent graduate of the University of Iowa, holding a B.A. in Biology, and is currently pursuing her masters in Science Education. In her free time, Olivia likes to...who are we kidding, what free time?

Lindsay Vincent (Fräulein Kost) Bio not provided.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE Meine Damen und Herren, Mesdames et Messieurs, Ladies and Gentlemen:

Cabaret has been part of the musical theater canon for close to half a century. Based on Christopher Isherwood's stories of Weimar-era Berlin, it was first produced on Broadway in 1966. Its best-known incarnation, a film adaptation only very loosely based on the original stage production, came out in 1972. More recently it played on Broadway yet again in the late Nineties and that particular production ran twice as long as the initial run. Not many musicals that have hit the fifty-year mark manage to find an audience a half-century on. While still popular with audiences, for instance, musicals of the Rodgers-&-Hammerstein and Lerner-&-Loewe variety do not necessarily run for an extended period of time on Broadway stages these days. Without slighting the quality of the material, it seems the appeal of these shows for a good number of audiences stem more from nostalgia: fondly remembered (and very well-crafted) tunes and stories performed live onstage. But while Cabaret has its share of fondly remembered tunes (penned by John Kander and Fred Ebb, who also wrote the cynical and dark Chicago) contributing to its continued popularity, the story itself cannot by any stretch of the imagination be called warm and fuzzy. Musicals set in Germany a decade or so before the Second World War chronicling the rise of National Socialism in the country generally aren't. And while the musical does feature two sets of romantic couples, it's not too much of a shock to reveal that all does not end happily. Cabaret can still shock when done correctly, even in the age of twerking. If nothing else it is a bit of a shock to see some fairly risqué bits of dancing done live onstage that one might expect to see in a music video -- or an awards show. But surely this isn't the reason why the popularity of the show endures, or why it retains its power to disturb. The show explores a darker side of humanity: licentiousness, moral disintegration, apathy -- something still not seen in most Broadway musicals. And it does so with great sympathy, humor and intelligence. The challenges, in music and choreography but also especially in terms of acting, are different than what one might encounter when doing more conventional musicals. I have been very fortunate to have worked with some fine collaborators in this production, chief among them Music Director Wes Habley and Choreographer Fawn Boston-Halter. They, along with the rest of the production designers and some very able and talented performers, have managed to bring to life the decadence and desperation of the Berlin of 1930, of the Kit Kat Klub and its Master Of Ceremonies, and the romance between the young American writer Clifford Bradshaw and the Toast of Mayfair: club chanteuse Fräulein Sally Bowles. Wilkommen!

—Josh Sazon
