    (Advanced Business Chinese)

    This course is designed for students who are interested in Chinesebusiness/economy and have completed at least the rst half ofAdvanced Chinese (Chinese 105a or the e!uivalent"

    Objectives:

    The course is an e#perimental course and it will create a simulatedbusiness environment in China to help students to get ac!uaintancewith the most important Chinese business vocabulary$ phrases$sentence patterns$ and rules for business writing so that learners canhave a very good command of the Chinese language needed for doingbusiness or economic research in Chinese spea%ing regions" At the endof this term$ students are e#pected to be able to ta%e part in businesstal%s &uently$ to read business documents of various %inds e'ectively$

    and to write properly styled business letters" eyond the language$students will also get cultural and social %nowledge crucial to businesssuccess in these regions" )uring the process of learning$ some realbusiness tas%s may be included"

    setting: the Shanghai branch of an American business consulting company is helpingseveral American and international companies to do business in hina! The tasks cover a

    great range of business activities such as market survey, accounting, advertising, stock

    market, insurance, human resources, business law and business"government relations! #oreach unit, there are both business conversations $formal and informal% and documents in

    written style!

    A very uni&ue feature of this course is that students are organi'ed in teams of three

    people! All the homework and tests $including final pro(ect% will be assigned to teams

    except for )ral Translation *ractice and Tests $+ncluding final oral exam% that will beindividual!
