Vietnam’s VNews picks up five DW English shows

Vietnamese news service, VNews, has picked up rights to five weekly shows from Deutsche Welle’s DW English ser-vice. The programmes debut this week with Vietnamese voice overs. The five

titles are Tomorrow Today, In Good Shape, Global 3000, Check In and Arts 21. The deal is a first for DW English on VNews, which is owned by Vietnam

News Agency and has mandated car-riage across platforms in Vietnam.

5,328 film, TV companies in China disappear

More than 5,000 film and TV companies in China have disappeared since the beginning of 2020, with the country’s

theatrical industry taking the heaviest hit. Counting the costs of Covid-19, China’s Economic Daily says that 5,328 film and television companies had closed from January to mid-April this year. The big-

gest devastation has, predictably, been in the theatrical sector.

q

Korea’s CJ ENM premiered the pilot of its game show co-pro with U.S. producer, Bunim/Murray Productions at the week-end (19 April), rolling out what it calls a welcome relief for audiences in the time of Covid-19. The game show, Cash Back, airs on CJ ENM cable channel, tvN, which has com-missioned two pilot episodes.

The show combines physical fitness with mental agility, featuring top athletes, in-cluding Olympics gold medalists and na-

tional champions, navigating crazy ob-stacles to bank as much money as they can in the form of Moneymojis – objects of various shapes, sizes and weights that are difficult to move.

The tvN version features 18 Korean athletes from six sports, including MMA, speed skating, basketball, gymnastics, water polo and Korean wrestling.

CJ ENM will distribute the show in Asia and Bunim/Murray Productions has rights for the rest of the world.

BEC World boss to exit in JuneAriya Banomyong cites personal reasons for quitting

Ariya Banomyong, president of listed Thai broadcast giant BEC World, is exiting the Bangkok-based network in June this year after a little over a year at the helm.

No reasons were given for his exit and he did not say in his note to staffers what he would be doing next.

BEC’s note to the Stock Exchange of Thailand cited personal reasons but gave no details.

The company’s executive committee

will take over management of the busi-ness, with board director Amporn Ma-leenont overseeing production, news, broadcasting, sales, marketing and digi-tal businesses.

Banomyong’s arrival in May last year was part of a digital transformation effort for the 50 year old BEC World. He previ-ously worked for Line TV in Thailand and was the first country head for Google Thailand.

Korea’s JTBC adds BBC Studios’ Doctor Foster to prime time line up

Korean broadcaster JTBC is adding BBC Studios’ drama Doctor Foster to its line up in the wake of mega-success of the Korean adaptation, A World of Married Cou-ple (see page 9). The U.K. original will run from mid-May, when the Korean ver-sion ends. A World of Married Couple has already passed ratings records set by previous cable record breaker, Sky Castle, for episodes aired. For episode eight on 18 April, nationwide ratings were 20.061% (AGB Nielsen). At episode eight, Sky Castle’s ratings were 9.539%. Sky Castle only rose above the 20% ratings mark on episode 18 of a 20-episode run.

CJ ENM’s former chief operating officer and Asia head of global sales, Anne Chan, has joined ViacomCBS Networks Asia in the newly created role of vice president, content distribution management and emerging business for the region.

Chan, who joined the regional network last week, reports into newly appointed senior vice president and general manager, Pierre Cheung.

She will be responsible for the company’s content distribution business, which includes affiliate and programme sales across Southeast Asia, Greater China and Japan, ViacomCBS said in a statement on Monday (20 April). She is also tasked with driving revenue for new business streams.

Viacom said Chan, particularly known for her brand-funded production pro-jects, would focus particularly on digital businesses, such as interactive content and influencer partnerships, and accelerate ViacomCBS’ studio ambition, through which the company produces content for third parties as well as its own

brands and platforms.Chan’s appointment comes two months after Viaco-mCBS upped Cheung to an expanded role as senior

vice president and general manager of Asia with a brief to “better align the company’s operations between these markets and target new commer-cial opportunities as a result”. He joined Viacom in

2015 as senior vice president and general manager for Greater China.

Cheung’s promotion was announced in February, fol-lowing the company’s wide-ranging regional re-org, an-

nounced out of New York and London in January. Long-time Asia-Pacific head, Mark White-head, exited as part of the new structure, along with Tan Chee Kiat (chief operat-

ing officer), Paras Sharma (Southeast Asia general manager and senior vice

president & digital media head for Asia), Amit Arora (business develop-ment head and senior vice president in charge of content distribution), and Sari Trisulo (senior director and head of content for MTV Networks Asia).

SVOD/Fremium platforms (covers global and regional streamers in Indonesia, excluding HBO Go)

PCCW Media’s regional platform Viu dominates streaming video consumption in Southeast Asia, emerging way ahead of the other three platforms – Netflix, iflix, iQiyi and Vidio – on the list of top five SVOD/freemium video streaming apps among populations in Covid-19 lockdown peri-ods, according to the first data out of Me-dia Partners Asia’s (MPA) ongoing study, Southeast Asia Online Video Consumer Insights & Analytics: A Definitive Study.

For the period from 16-29 March, Viu took eight of the top 10 streamed shows, giving way to Netflix for two spots – 2nd and 4th.

Total online video weekly streaming min-utes on mobile grew 60% in aggregate across Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore between 20 Jan and 11 April 2020. Consumption reached 58 bil-lion minutes on mobile by 11 April versus 36.4 billion on 20 January, the study shows.

“The penetration of streaming video has increased dramatically during this pandemic as millions have been forced to stay and operate from home,” says MPA executive director Vivek Couto.

“The focus is now on how successfully ma-jor emerging platforms will be able to retain newly acquired customers in 2H 2020 and to what extent AVOD platforms can capi-talise on the expanded reach,” he adds.

MPA says the four markets had a com-bined seven million paying online video

Covid-19 Impact on Mobile Video Streaming

or OTT customers at end-March 2020, ac-counting for US$350 million in annual con-sumer spend.

Netflix is a clear leader in most markets, fol-lowed by Viu with its freemium service while other players such as HBO, iQiyi and Ten-cent are well placed to grow in the future along with new entrants such as Disney+.

“Key local players should be encour-aged by increasing consumption and in certain cases, monetisation, in the sur-

veyed markets as they look to invest in scaling their offerings and managing the transition from broadcast to digital video distribution,” Couto says.

The report also addresses the recalibra-tion of consumer spend on video and the potential for super-aggregation. Couto says today consumer spending on online video is about 25% in aggregate of what customers spend on linear pay-TV servic-es in the four markets.

New Thai prime-time drama, My Hus-band in Law, premieres simultaneously in Thailand and China on Tuesday, 21 April, as part of a simulcast deal between Thai free-TV broadcaster BEC World and mainland Chinese streamer Tencent Video.

This is the second show to be simulcast across both platforms after blockbuster series, The Crown Princess, in 2018.

The two shows are part of the agree-ment announced in January to distrib-ute long-form Thai drama in China in 2020.

New episodes of the 15-episode My Huband in Law, produced by Thong En-

tertainment for Channel 3 Thailand, will run on Monday and Tuesday nights.

The show stars Prin (Mark) Suparat as a successful architect who lands in trouble over his affair with a married woman. To escape her angry husband, he marries his childhood friend, Mei, only to discov-er she has a crush on him

The second simulcast deal with Ten-cent comes a little over a month after BEC World premiered its first simulcast drama series, Mist of Love (Leh Ban Pha Kal), with Vietnamese entertainment tech giant, Dat Viet Group.

The company also has simulcast licens-ing agreements in Taiwan.

Philippines’ TV consumption in Q1 was all about drama, which took 41% of de-mand for series tracked by data science company Parrot Analytics in the first three months of this year. For digital originals, drama’s share rose to almost 46%.

Comedy was second on the all-shows list with 13.6% of demand, topped by NBC’s The Good Place, followed by ani-mation with demand share of 10.4%. Jap-anese anime series, My Hero Academia,

topped the list of animation titles. Led by Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob

SquarePants, children’s programming took 8.6% of overall demand.

Demand for action and adventure se-ries rose significantly for digital originals compared to overall programming, go-ing from a 10.4% share to 22.2%.

The most in-demand action and ad-venture digital original for Filipino audi-ences was Disney+’s The Mandalorian.

Aus producers slam quota

suspensionsMove could “at best snuff

the opportunities for arebound,” SPA says

Screen Producers Australia (SPA) says it is deeply concerned about the Australian government’s move to suspend local content quotas for 2020, with the pos-sibility of an extension into 2021.

SPA chief executive Matthew Deaner warns that “these hard cuts have the potential to at worst cripple Australia’s production industry and at best snuff the opportunities for a rebound for much of our sector at a time when it is facing a very real battle for survival”.

Deaner suggests temporary averaging flexibility over the next few years rather than a hard suspension.

He also says that, given the amount of content ready to go, a “complete sus-pension of the quotas in 2020 is dispro-portionate to the actual level of disrup-tion to the supply pipeline”.

SPA is calling on the government to implement an A$1 billion/US$636 million content fund and an extension of con-tent obligations to SVOD services.

“This package is critical not only for our economy and cultural recovery but also to protect our national sovereignty,” Deaner says.

Time to Hunt drama over

Netflix cleared for 23 April global release

Netflix has been cleared for a global streaming debut of Korean thriller, Time to Hunt, on Thursday, 23 April (4pm, Korea time). The dystopian series was pulled from the 10 April schedule at the last minute following a conflict over dis-tributor Big Little Pictures’ decision to sign a global release deal with Netflix.

Less than half way through its run, new Korean drama, A World of Married Cou-ple (aka The World of the Married), has become the highest-rated Korean ad-aptation of a Western script anyone can remember.

The 16-episode series is also on track to overtake original series Crash Landing on You, which closed at 21.683% in Feb this year, and go on to smash all-time cable ratings record set in 2018/9 by Sky Castle, produced by JTBC Drama House and Ko-rean indie HB Entertainment. Sky Castle hit 23.779% during its run in 2018/9.

A remake of BBC Studios’ Doctor Foster, A World of Married Couple has also cap-tured more than 55% of Viu’s streaming audience in Asia since its premiere, ac-cording to Viu data on Monday (20 April).

A World of Married Couple stars Kim Hee-ae (Sons and Daughters) as a suc-cessful doctor with a perfect life who finds things unravelling when she starts believing that her husband, played by Park Hae-joon (Arthdal Chronicles), is having an affair.

The series premiered at the end of March. Weekend ratings for episode sev-en this past weekend on JTBC in Korea were 18.501% on Friday (17 April), rising to 20.061% on Saturday (18 April).

A World of Married Couple streams on PCCW Media’s Asian platform, Viu, with an exclusive first window eight hours after broadcast in Korea. Viu subtitles in six lan-guages (traditional & simplified Chinese, English, Thai, Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Melayu, Burmese) available in Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Myanmar.

A World of Married Couple is among a small slate of North American and Eu-ropean scripted titles that have been made/commissioned in Korea.

Adaptations include Designated Survi-vor: 60 Days (Disney ABC/eOne), political drama The Good Wife (CBS), Entourage and legal drama Suits (NBCUniversal). Ko-rea has also picked up dramas from BBC Studios (see chart, pg 10).

Until A World of Married Couple, none

reached sustainable double-digit ratings, if they hit double digits at all.

Designated Survivor: 60 Days ran on CJ ENM-owned cable channel tvN in July/ Aug 2019 (Mon/Tues), with a global re-lease on Netflix. In Korea, nationwide ratings peaked at 6.178% for the finale. Only the final two episodes of the 16-part series rose above 5%. Netflix hasn’t dis-closed viewer engagement.

The Good Wife (ran in July/Aug 2016) peaked at 6.232% nationwide in its Fri/Sat 8.30pm slot on tvN. The finale was the only episode that passed the 6% ratings mark. Four of the episodes were less than 4%. Another seven came in at between 4% and 5%, and four ran between 5% and 6%.

Suits, which ran on KBS2 from April to June 2018, peaked at 10.7% nationwide for its fi-nale. Although it did better than other ad-aptations, the 16-episode show spent most of its run between 7.4% and 9.9%.

Criminal Minds Korea hit its nationwide peak of 4.187% with its premiere episode on 26 July 2017 and it was downhill from there. The 20-episode show hit lows of 2.036% at episode 11 before ending at 3.048% for the finale on 28 Sept 2017.

Dark comedy Entourage (Nov/Dec 2016) was the biggest scripted format

Record-breaking track for Korea’s Doctor Foster adaptation Asian streamer Viu wins with exclusive window for A World of Married Couple

fail, with 10 of the 16 episodes below 1% rating.

Like Hotel del Luna, Viu’s acquisition of an exclusive first window for A World of Married Couple was a licensing coup with roots that stretch back to the early vision of the platform as the streaming home of Korean content. Now, facing rising competition from Asian and glob-al platforms, Viu continues to defend its first-mover Korean drama advantage with first-run titles such as When My Love Blooms, Oh My Baby, Kkondae Intern, Good Casting and Fix You.

At the same time, Netflix is presenting an aggressive Korean strategy, including Stu-dio Dragon’s The King: Eternal Monarch (debuted 17 April) and blockbuster Crash Landing on You; a close alliance with CJ ENM’s powerhouse Studio Dragon; and what seems like a bottomless pot of gold for expensive originals and acquisitions.

Chinese streamer iQiyi is also in play, building out its regional platform with ex-clusive rights to smaller Korean shows like Eccentric! Chef Moon (Channel A) and non-exclusive access to others.

What happens next? Our guess: a focus on acquiring fewer better productions and tougher negotiations as competitors pile in... beyond that, anyone’s guess.

For the Philippines’ TV industry, measures to contain the Covid-19 spread kicked off in mid-March with the decision to close doors to live audiences. This was quickly followed by a production stand-still as broadcasters responded to the government’s emergency declarations, quarantine orders and curfews.

What does this mean for the coun-try’s content partners and formats rights holders?

Obviously delayed roll outs, coupled with a focus on formats that are less costly to produce. Distributors said they were using the time to talk about best practices and share ideas about lock-down entertainment. And then, like ev-erywhere, there’s the shift to online/vir-tual operations.

“Covid-19 has thrown a wrench into the best-laid schedules the world over,” says Daryl Kho, the Endemol Shine Group’s se-nior sales director for Asia. But, he points out, broadcasters shifted quickly, rolling out, for example, Zoom-based cooking auditions, virtually projected audiences and remote editing.

ABS-CBN, faced with the delayed pre-miere of Your Face Sounds Familiar Kids, used its Big Brother rights to launch a Facebook-led community outreach cam-paign, Pinoy Big Brother Stay At Home Edi-tion, where the show’s approx eight mil-lion Facebook followers are assigned Big Brother-style tasks. Videos are uploaded and fans engage with the show’s past housemates through live chats and video calls. The goal is to raise awareness, foster solidarity, offer inspiration, support, health tips and entertainment.

“Coming off a record-breaking 38-week season, this has been a tremen-dous way to not just retain but grow fan engagement during the off-season. It’s also the perfect application of the age-old advice: ‘when life throws you stones, build a bridge, not a wall’,” Kho adds.

Covid-19 crashed into an increasingly vibrant formats market in the Philippines, according to ContentAsia’s Formats Out-look research.

The Philippines was up 14% last year over 2018, for a total of 16 formats in 2019. The country had just over 5% of the region’s total 312 formats in 2019.

GMA Network commissioned six of the to-tal 16 formats (the network commissioned two formats in 2018), giving it a share of 37.5% of the country’s formats market.

GMA was also behind the only scripted (Descendants of the Sun) and variety (Running Man) formats in the Philippines for the year.

ABS-CBN commissioned the remain-ing 10 formats (down from 12 formats in 2018). These included Endemol Shine Group’s Big Brother Philippines season eight, which ended in August 2019, and ITV Studios-owned Talpa’s The Voice Teens season two, which premiered in February 2020.

A local version of KBS’ Descendants of the Sun, part of GMA’s 70th anniver-sary slate, premiered in the prime time

8.35pm slot on 10 February and was ini-tially scheduled to run to 29 May 2020. Production was suspended after episode 28 on 18 March amidst efforts to curb Co-vid-19 spread. About 65 episodes have been planned, stripped across the week-day schedule. The series is directed by Dominic Zapata (My Husband’s Lover, Temptation of Wife) under GMA’s enter-tainment group SVP, Lilybeth Rasonable, and drama VP Redgie Magno.

The company also announced in Feb-ruary that they will be co-producing SBS’ variety show Running Man Philippines. The Philippines is the third country in Asia to make an adaptation of the show after Vietnam and China.

In 2019, singing contest genre dominat-ed the market, a 50% increase compared to 2018. Game show was up 33%, dance contest and entertainment remained the same but reality (social experiment and talent) saw a slide of 60%.

Peppa Pig tops Taiwan demandTencent animation breaks into top three streaming originals

Hasbro’s Peppa Pig swept the board in Taiwan for the week of 8 April, beating blockbuster dramas Game of Thrones and Westworld for top spot on data science company Parrot Analytics’ overall top 10 of titles that generate the most demand activity across digi-tal platforms.

Animated titles showed up in a big way for the week, with three other series – Naruto, Spongebob Squarepants and My Hero Academia – making the top 10 list for a total of four titles.

Spanish series, La Casa de Papel (aka Money Heist), led a list of digital origi-nals dominated by Netflix with seven of the top 10 titles. Parrot Analytics says the show has been the most in-demand se-ries in the world since the new season de-buted on 3 April.

Another animated series, Tencent QQ’s Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (Mo Dao Zu Shi), broke into the top three streaming originals in third spot for the week after Money Heist and CBS All Ac-cess’ Star Trek: Picard.

Date range: 8-14 April 2020 Demand Expressions® (DEx): The global TV measurement standard devel-oped by Parrot Analytics, which represents the total audience demand being expressed for a title, within a market. Audience demand reflects the desire, engagement and viewership, weighted by importance; so a stream/download is a higher expression of demand than a ‘like’/comment.
