SEPTEMBER IS CHILD SAFETY MONTH September is Child Safety Month, and it is a wonderful time to distribute important information about how to make the world a safer place for our children. Consider partnering with a local hospital or pediatric clinic to support a local campaign. Clubs may want to sponsor an infant first aid or fire safety class through their local fire department and paramedic unit; or, clubs may want to donate to an organization that provides safe car seats and cribs to families in need. There are many projects that can help keep children safe. Consider one listed below:

Inform and Educate! Order brochures to distribute or leave in doctors’ offices or clinics, health departments, drugstore counters, high school counseling centers, libraries or other areas where parents (or parents-to-be) can see them.

o Learn the Crying Code – Help parents and caregivers learn how to prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome.

o FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) Prevention – Explains the dangers of drinking during pregnancy. o Time Out Teddy – Gives parents tips on discipline and parenting. o Report Card Inserts – Show parents positive approaches to dealing with disappointing grades. o What-to-do and what-to-expect booklets – Help parents deal with challenging behaviors.

Think Safety! Help those in your community understand how to protect children. o Check out the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website for information on product

recalls and other safety issues. Share this information in your club newsletters or presentations.

o Car safety – Partner with local insurance agencies, car dealers, and others to teach people about safely securing their children in their vehicles.

Page 7: C ll o c o n E - National Exchange Club...Steve Rawlins 3 8.28.14 Exchange Excel Club of University Christian School, Jacksonville, FL 30 Jacksonville, FL Florida David Ledbetter Steve

7

o In-home safety – If you have children in your home (full time or part time), this is a good opportunity to get down on their level to check out potential hazards. Sit or kneel on the floor and see what you find. Do you have plug protectors? Are electrical cords secured or could a child be injured by pulling an appliance cord? Are dangerous chemicals locked away? Are medications out of reach of little hands?

Talk about it!

o Write a letter to the editor or guest article for your local newspaper about child safety issues. o Offer to go on your local radio station to discuss safety. o Offer to give a presentation to other local groups.

Child safety isn’t all about parenting and discipline and prevention of abuse. For the wellbeing of our children, we need to be diligent observers. We can be aware, informed and know what steps to take when we see a potentially dangerous situation developing. Thank you to all the Exchange Clubs that work tirelessly to towards this goal. And don’t forget to count your projects toward your National Service Award. If your project is related to child abuse prevention, consider applying for the CARE Award in 2015! Contact: [email protected]. Why is becoming a Berkey Fellow important?

“My primary reason for becoming a Berkey Fellow is to build our Endowment so that the interest on that money will ensure that our Programs of Service and our Child Abuse Prevention Project will be funded in the future. Secondly, Kay and I enjoy attending the Berkey Dinner with our Exchange friends at the National Convention.”

Past NEC and NECF President

Jim Brown

What is the Berkey Fellowship? Named in honor of Charles Berkey, the founder of Exchange, the Berkey Fellowship honors outstanding supporters of the ideals of the National Exchange Club. Individuals or clubs can join this elite group of Berkey Fellows with a contribution of $1,000 or more to the National Exchange Club Foundation during the fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Monthly payments are available.

How is Berkey Fellowship money used? Gifts made to the Berkey Fellowship become part of the Endowment Fund - a permanent bank of funds for the NEC Foundation. The Endowment Fund’s principal is permanently invested, and interest earnings from the fund are used to support the programs of Exchange. The Endowment ensures that Exchange’s programs are sustained well into the future.
