The states legitimate and compelling interests in protecting fetal life and mater- nal health justify the informed consent requirements of Public Law 187, Marion Superior Court Judge Gerald Zore said in his ruling last week. Public Law 187 is a reasonable effort to encourage informed consent based on reflective thought in the abortion context, he wrote in his decision. As for the balance of harms and the public interest, where the constitutionality of a statute is at stake, the public interest is always presumed to favor the statute, Judge Zore wrote. Plaintiffs have not shown a reasonable likelihood of succeed- ing on the merits of their case at trial. He also noted that federal courts have already adjudicated all of Public Law 187 to be valid, notwithstanding the fact that a womans right to abortion is clearly pro- tected under federal law and notwithstand- ing the rigorous scrutiny of abortion regu- lations commanded by Roe vs. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood vs. Casey (1992). WASHINGTON (CNS)The use of pre- ventive force such as the U.S. invasion of Iraq ought to be evaluated from the perspec- tive of what sort of legacy it leaves and viewed in light of the post-9/11 stress the nation is undergoing, according to two speak- ers at a theology and public policy forum. While a doctrine of preventive war may derive in part from an ethic of responsibil- ityto protect ourselves and the world from catastrophic attacksit also has elements of an ethic of fear, said Gerry Powers, director of the Office of International Justice and Peace at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. That ethic of fear comes from the understandable preoccupation of the people of the United States with their own fears and vulnerabilities in the face of global terrorism, said Powers at a May 1 colloquium on the ethical issues of pre-emptive war hosted by Wesley Theological Seminary and its Churches Center for Theology and Public Policy. But those post-Sept. 11, 2001, fears are leading the nation to embrace a formula of instilling fear of the United States as a pro- tection from catastrophic attacks that echoes the philosophy of the brutal Roman emperor Caligula: Let them hate us if they will, pro- vided only that they fear us, he said. That formula might work for the New York Yankees, but it did not work for the Romans and it will not work for us, Powers said. It will not work because it creates a cycle of fear that fuels a cycle of violence. He warned that the combination of U.S. world primacy and U.S. vulnerability could lead to one kind of legacy: a sort of muscu- lar unilateralism in our foreign policy which includes preventative force and an over- reliance on short-term military solutions to deal with a troubled and sometimes threaten- ing world. Such a policy would blur the distinctions between legitimate defense and aggression, said Powers, as well as make the world even more turbulent and unstable, be inconsistent with the moral certainty required before force is justified and be seen by many as a form of neocolonialism and endorsement of the notion that might makes right. Indiana�s 1995 informed consent law,intended to educate women about abortionprocedures, risks and alternatives, finallywent into effect on April 30 after an eight-year legal battle by abortion providersopposed to the required 18-hour waitingperiod and in-person counseling by med-ical personnel.

�The state�s legitimate and compellinginterests in protecting fetal life and mater-nal health justify the informed consentrequirements of Public Law 187,� MarionSuperior Court Judge Gerald Zore said inhis ruling last week.

Father Jack Okon, 58, who has beenon administrative leave since June 2002,has resigned from active ministry. Hisresignation follows an investigation bythe Archdiocese of Indianapolis of alle-gations of sexual misconduct withyoung boys nearly 30 years ago.

Archbishop Buechlein has asked allpersons to pray for both the victims ofsexual abuse and those accused andtheir families. �

preliminary injunction sought by theClinic for Women and other abortionproviders. He also denied the plaintiffs�request for a stay pending interlocutory�temporary or provisional�appeal.

Abortion providers first appealed thelaw after the Indiana General Assemblypassed the informed consent legislationand former Gov. Evan Bayh signed thebill into law in 1995.

The case advanced through county,state and district appellate courts, wherethe law was repeatedly upheld through theyears, all the way to the U.S. SupremeCourt, where the justices declined toreview it in late February.

The high court�s decision not to rule onthe case automatically caused theinformed consent law to go into effect, butabortion providers quickly appealed thelaw again in Marion Superior Court on thebasis that it placed an undue hardship onpoor women and women without access totransportation by requiring two trips to anabortion clinic.

The abortion providers also challengedthe constitutionality of the law, which wasonly in effect for a week.

The Clinic for Women in Indianapolisand other abortion providers sought andgained a temporary restraining order onMarch 3 from Marion Superior CourtJudge David Dreyer, who set a prelimi-nary injunction hearing for March 11.

On March 4, Marion County prosecutorCarl J. Brizzi, acting on behalf of the Stateof Indiana and Attorney General SteveCarter, filed a motion for a change ofvenue from the judge as well as an

objection to the hearing.The temporary restraining order was

then extended until April 30 to allowenough time for selection of a newjudge. In late March, the plaintiffs andthe State of Indiana selected MarionSuperior Court Judge Gerald Zore tohear the case.

The abortion providers had hoped toprove that Indiana�s informed consent lawviolates the state constitution and placesan undue hardship on poor women seek-ing an abortion.

State Sen. R. Michael Young (R-Dist.35), a former state representative who co-authored the House version of Senate Bill311, which became Public Law 187, saidon March 17 that there is nothing uncon-stitutional about this law.

�No one is prohibited from having anabortion,� Young said. �All the bill does isgive women medical information bywhich they can make an informed deci-sion and some time to reflect on theirdecision. It just says, �Here�s the informa-tion. Think about it for a little bit.� �

Young said abortion providers don�tseem to want women to make an informedchoice about abortion.

�It is frustrating,� he said about thetemporary restraining order in March, �butI think it makes the other side look verybad because of their attempts to make surethat women aren�t fully informed beforethey make one of the most important deci-sions of their lives.

�Their whole argument has alwaysbeen that it puts an extra burden on poorwomen by making them go to the abortionclinic twice,� Young said. �The courtsshot that argument down and said the billnever required that, and it never has.Women can receive in-person counseling

from a referring physician in their area.�Dr. Gary Wright, a physician and ethi-

cist on the staff of St. Vincent Hospital inIndianapolis, testified on behalf of theinformed consent law for two hours onApril 29 in Judge Zore�s court.

�The informed consent informationcan be given to the woman by her refer-ring physician, by a delegated agent suchas a nurse midwife, nurse practitioner orphysician assistant, or by the physicianwho is going to perform the abortion,�Wright said. �Only in the last scenariowould a second trip to an abortion clinicbe necessary.�

Wright said he also testified about themerits of the 18-hour waiting periodrequired by Public Law 187.

�My position as an expert witness wasthat abortion is a unique medical situation,with both the health and welfare of thewoman and the life of the unborn child atrisk,� he said, �so it requires the mostsober reflective period between the deci-sion to have an abortion and the actualtime of the medical procedure.�

Wright said the 18-hour waiting periodenables the woman to have the necessarytime to process information about otheroptions, including adoption, availablefinancial and social resources, and finan-cial obligations of the birth father.

�Informed consent is not an eventwhere the woman signs a piece of paper,�he said. �It is a period of discernment andreflection which requires three founda-tional components�information, compre-hension and voluntariness.�

The pro-life physician said he hastalked with women who suffer from long-term physical and psychological problemscaused by abortion, and he believes thatterminating a pregnancy is the most

difficult decision a woman will ever haveto make because she must live with thereality that the abortion has killed herunborn child.

Studies indicate that one-third ofwomen want to inflict harm upon them-selves after undergoing an abortion, hesaid. Women who have had abortions alsoare more likely to experience infertility orserious medical complications that includepre-term labor and placenta previa duringpost-abortion pregnancies.

�Abortion is traumatic for women,� hesaid. �Most women do not choose abor-tion easily. I don�t believe any abortionprovider readily describes the reality ofpost-abortion trauma. Therein lies the cruxof the informed consent process withregard to abortion. Terminating a preg-nancy is not an empowering choice. It is adesperate, last resort by women who areincredibly vulnerable. Therefore, we needto protect their interests.�

Reacting to the implementation ofPublic Law 187 after eight years of legalwrangling, Servants of the Gospel of LifeSister Diane Carollo, director of the arch-diocesan Office of Pro-Life Activities,said Judge Zore�s ruling to allow the lawto go into effect is a victory for the peopleof Indiana, a victory for lawmakers and avictory for women�s rights.

�At least now, by law, women must beinformed of the risks and implications ofsurgical abortions,� Sister Diane said.�The recent medical findings that embed-ded bones of aborted babies, left behind inthe wombs of women, cause infertility,infections and other medical problemsdramatically highlight the need for theinformed consent law.The time has comefor all the facts about abortion to be madeavailable to women.� �

Christian vision, according to Powers.In all their statements on Iraq over the

past decade and in their statements about theSept. 11 attacks, Catholic bishops have beenclear that the United States has a moral rightand obligation to defend against mass terror-ism, he explained. But the Church�s teach-ings on just war begin with a strong

presumption against use of force, he added.�The case for preventive force is based on

a very different understanding of the just-wartradition as a permissive doctrine that beginswith a presumption against injustice or for ajust political order,� Powers said. �The bish-ops� starting point assumes a sharp distinc-tion between war and politics that preventiveforce doctrines blur.�

The U.S. bishops and the Vatican alsohave questioned the wisdom of acting unilat-erally as being counter to a Christian vision

of cooperative security and as lacking thechecks and balances that would come withacting as part of a broader mandate, he said.

A second presenter at the colloquium,Elizabeth Bounds, said an underlying senseof anxiety in the United States, which hasnot eased significantly since the Sept. 11 ter-rorist attacks, is a factor in how the publicviews the pre-emptive strike against Iraq.

Bounds, an associate professor ofChristian ethics at Candler TheologicalSeminary of Emory University in Atlanta,described a sense of insecurity and uneasestemming from the terrorist attacks as wellas the unsettled economic times as influenc-ing the public support for President Bush�s

actions in Iraq.�Support for a pre-emptive strike gives

unsettled people something to grasp,� shesaid.

Psychologists know that people who arefeeling great stress cannot bear uncertainty,Bounds said. So that perceived sense ofpowerlessness will have to be addressed at avery basic level before people can look withclear eyes at the broader implications of apolicy of pre-emptive war.

Churches are the natural place to addressthe public�s unsettled feelings, she said,adding that efforts like the reconciliationprogram of the Mennonite Churches wouldbe one path. �

Started in 1976 with the �economicsof Jesus,� the Fullers have seen theirorganization build homes for more than120,000 families in 3,000 communitiesworldwide.

Millard Fuller, who owned his ownmarketing firm, was a millionaire by age29. While prosperous in business, hishealth, marriage and integrity were suf-fering.

After re-evaluating his values and lifedirection, he reconciled with his wife,sold their possessions and gave theirmoney to the poor.

Searching for a new life, they lived ina Christian community, Koinonia Farm,near Americus, Ga., where the idea forHabitat for Humanity was born. They

Marian College will graduate 212 stu-dents. An honorary doctoral degree inpublic service will be given to Cardisand Charles Stuart. Dorothy Stuart andBarbara Cooling will receive honorarydegrees in humane letters. �

OPINION

Ruhpolding is a quaint little resortvillage nestled in a valley sur-

rounded by high mountains in Bavaria,Germany. Its parish church is highabove the village, at the top of a steephill. On a side altar inside the church,among numerous gilded statues andpaintings, is the statue of the�Ruhpolding Madonna,� dating fromaround the year 1200. A unique aspectof the statue is that a tabernacle isbuilt in the middle of the statue, wherethe Blessed Sacrament is kept.

Pope John Paul II would considerthis most appropriate. In his 14thencyclical, which he signed on HolyThursday, he described Mary as �thefirst tabernacle in history,� the vessel�in which the Son of God, still invisi-ble to our human gaze, allowed him-self to be adored by Elizabeth� at thetime of the Visitation.

In his encyclical, titled Ecclesia deEucharistia, the pope reaffirmed theChurch�s traditional teachings aboutthe real presence of Christ in theEucharist, on the need for validlyordained ministers for its celebration,and on the importance of following theChurch�s liturgical norms.

As the pope said, the Eucharist isthe greatest gift Christ left to those ofus who are members of his Church.

From its beginning, the Church hasbelieved and taught that the bread andwine received in the Eucharist afterconsecration by a priest is truly thebody and blood of Christ. St. Justin,for example, in his First Apology writ-ten in the second century, describedthe confection of the Eucharist and itsdistribution at the Sunday liturgy. Hewrote: �Not as common bread andcommon drink do we receive these,but we have been taught that this foodis the flesh and blood of that Jesuswho was made flesh.�

St. Augustine asserted: �The breadwhich you see on the altar, once it issanctified by the word of God, is thebody of Christ. And that chalice, orrather what the chalice contains, onceit is sanctified by the word of God, isthe blood of Christ.�

The ancient Jerusalem Catechesessaid, �Since Christ himself has

declared the bread to be his body, whocan have any further doubt? Since hehimself has said quite categorically,�This is my blood,� who would dare toquestion it and say that it is not hisblood? Therefore, it is with completeassurance that we receive the breadand wine as the body and blood ofChrist.�

The Fourth Lateran Council in 1215formally adopted the term �transubstan-tiation� as the way Christ becomes pre-sent in the Holy Eucharist. This doc-trine, reaffirmed by the Council of Trentin the 16th century and again by theSecond Vatican Council in the 20th cen-tury, asserts that, by the consecration ofthe bread and wine by a validlyordained priest, there takes place achange of the whole substance of thebread into the substance of the body ofChrist and of the whole substance of thewine into the substance of his blood.

The accidental properties of thebread and wine remain. The bread stilllooks and tastes like bread and thewine still looks and tastes like wine.But their substance has been changedwhen the priest says, �This is mybody� and �This is the cup of myblood.�

In his new encyclical, Pope JohnPaul emphasizes more than the doc-trine of transubstantiation. In someplaces, he says, people focus so muchon the Eucharist as a �fraternal ban-quet� that they forget its sacrificialmeaning. The Mass, he said, �makesChrist�s one, definitive redemptivesacrifice present in time� so that thosewho participate in it do so as if wewere in Jerusalem with Jesus.

He also wrote that he has observedabuses in the way the Eucharist is pre-sented and adored. He reaffirmedChurch teaching that those who havecommitted a serious sin must go toconfession before receivingCommunion, and he said that anotherdocument will be coming on the oblig-ation to follow Church rules for thecelebration of Mass and adoration ofthe Eucharist. If we have a properunderstanding of the Eucharist, weshould welcome that second documentwhen it comes.

The limits of human freedom

Cardinal Newman was a champion offreedom of conscience, but he also

knew its limits. Hewrote, �Conscienceis not a license [to doas you please]. Onthe contrary, it is astern mother. Onemust be concernedabout God�s law andthe common good.�

The unbridledexaltation of human

freedom has led to great harm in soci-ety. The drug subculture attests to that.There are other moral limits that cannotbe ignored and still be in good con-science.

In civil law, we have the classicexample of the constitutional right offree speech. You are free to say what-ever you want in America, but withinlimits. You are not free to yell �Fire!� ina crowded theater when there is no fire.It could lead to panic and human injury.Inciting a riot is a crime.

On a different issue, American lawpermits abortion. Normally, the law issupposed to protect the sanctity of life.In the United States, however, one canmurder an infant in the womb withimpunity. Ironically, one second afterthe birth of a baby the law protects theinfant as a person, with legal rightsunder the law.

It is immoral to stop a beating heartno matter what the law says. One mightbe allowed to follow freedom whenthere is a doubt, but the only doubt inthe case of abortion has to do with thetime life begins. The precise time ittakes the male sperm and female ovumto unite and become a human person isunknown. Douching immediately after arape is considered to be morally permis-sible even in Catholic hospitals.

What about withholding

extraordinary means to sustain life inthe case of a dying patient? It is notimmoral to withdraw life support fromthose who are near death; one does nothave to sustain life artificially formonths or even years, thus denying apatient the right to die with dignity. Aslong as there is no direct attack on theperson�s life, it is permitted to withdrawthe life-support systems, allowing natureto take its course.

The head of the family has theauthority to make this decision in goodconscience after consulting other familymembers and medical experts.

Removing the feeding tube, however,is another matter. Once it is inserted, itsremoval may have criminal implica-tions. I am not going to make any gen-eral statements except to say all deci-sions involving another human life gobeyond one�s private right to freedom ofconscience.

Dorothy Day was courageous in exer-cising her conscience, but she alwaysremained focused on God�s will. In a1935 issue of The Catholic Worker, shewrote:

�The early Christians started with theworks of mercy, and it was this tech-nique which converted the world.Starting with the corporal works ofmercy, to feed the hungry, shelter thehomeless, etc., and concluding with thespiritual works of mercy: to instruct theignorant, to counsel the doubtful, etc.�She continued, �Not all works arewithin the reach of all, that is under-stood. But, that we should take part insome of them is a matter of obligation, a�strict precept� imposed by the naturaland divine law.�

Use the gift of freedom well, andalways respect the rights of others.

This year, the Fourth Sunday ofEaster is Mother�s Day. AndPope John Paul II has designated

it as the World Day of Prayer forVocations to the Priesthood. The coinci-dence of the two occasions is a happyone. And I am reminded of an old cus-tom that connected ordination to thepriesthood and mothers.

When I was ordained a priest onMay 3, 1964, the rite of ordination wasa bit different. Besides being celebratedin Latin, after the anointing of our handswith sacred chrism, they were wrappedin a white linen cloth called amanutergium (Latin for �covering of thehand�). An unusual practice was associ-ated with it. As the ceremony pro-gressed, the cloth was removed andwhisked away by a Saint Meinrad monkto be washed and ironed before the endof the ordination. The cloth was thenpresented to our respective mothers afterthe Mass. It was a long-standing customthat upon the death of the mother of apriest her hands were wrapped with thesame manutergium during the wake.

The practice sounds a bit unusual inour day, but the intent was to underscorethe role of our mothers in pursuing ourvocation to the priesthood. Although the

custom was discontinued after theSecond Vatican Council, when Momwent home to God in July of 1982 wefound the manutergium in an envelopealong with other things she had set asidefor her funeral. Although the custom haddisappeared, my family made sure thecloth was with her in the coffin.

Once in awhile, some of you parentsand grandparents ask me how to fostervocations in your family. As a matter offact, the possibility of a vocation topriesthood (or religious life or a lay min-istry role in the Church) depends a lot onthe family environment. For sure, thefaith of our parents, lived in word anddeed, provides the context in whichsomeone who is called to the priesthoodmore readily perceives God�s grace.

It was true for me. Maybe it will helpif I tell how my parents helped mebecome a priest. I suppose mothers morenaturally nurture a vocation, though Iwould not describe my mom as someonewho was particularly expressive in herpiety. She just lived it. And, not toexclude the importance of my dad, sodid he. Neither one was pushy about ourfaith, but they didn�t pull any puncheseither. They lived the faith and theyexpected my brother and I to do the

And my parents were circumspect inattending to my desire to be a priest.They were there for me, but they alsogave me plenty of room to discern andpursue God�s call with appropriate inde-pendence. But, once I was in the semi-nary, they also saw to it that I stayedwithin the boundaries of what the semi-nary way of life required. There wasn�t aweek that I didn�t receive a newsy letterfrom Mom.

I have a clear recollection of a specialvisit from Mom one Sunday afternoon inMay of 1957. (Dad was at a St. Vincentde Paul meeting, so Mom drove overfrom Jasper by herself.) I wasn�t sur-prised by the visit because earlier in theweek I had written a letter to her andDad telling them that I thought God wascalling me to be a Benedictine priestrather than a diocesan priest. Mom had afew questions about my impending

When I wasappointed president-rector of the semi-nary theologate in 1971, my folks wereconcerned about the burden it might be.When I was appointed head of both thecollege seminary and theological semi-nary in 1982, Mom and Dad were reallyconcerned. Mom didn�t usually sendValentines, but that year I got one with aquotation of St. Augustine: �No burdenis too great for loving hearts.� I stillkeep that card in my breviary. Some-times I think it was merciful that Godcalled Mom home before I was named abishop!

Anyway, that�s how Mom and Dadhelped me. I am forever grateful. I talkto them in prayer every day. �

It�s a summer vacation they�ll neverforget.

What they once only dreamed aboutdoing is paid for in full as three teachersfrom the Archdiocese of Indianapolis eachreceived a $7,500 Teacher CreativityFellowship from Lilly Endowment Inc.

The endowment allows teachers to pur-sue their own summer plan for personaland professional renewal.

Margaret Shain, a science teacher atOur Lady of Perpetual Help School inNew Albany, will be touring the NewEngland states and the Canadian AtlanticMaritimes looking for all types of flower-ing plants. She plans to catalog the plantsand use them in the school�s science cur-riculum next year.

Two English teachers from BrebeufJesuit Preparatory School in Indianapolisalso received fellowships. TamaraO�Hearn will study Gothic architecture inFrance, England and Italy, and ErinHawkins will hike 266.4 miles onIndiana�s four largest trails while workingon original poems about Indiana land-scapes.

Only 120 teachers out of 800 appli-cants from across the state were awardedfellowships.

Teachers must have at least three yearsof teaching or administrative experienceto apply for a fellowship and pledge tocontinue teaching in Indiana for at leastone more year.

Studying flowering plants over thesummer is a personal interest for Shainthat began when she took a botany class afew years ago.

However, she wasn�t able to go study asmuch as she would have liked because shetook the class while still teaching school.

�This will allow me to come up with anice catalog of plants or pictures that kidscan use,� Shain said.

Shain will use her recently purchaseddigital camera and laptop computer tohelp her with the fieldwork.

Her students are already benefiting

from the fellowship money, havingrecently used the digital camera for classprojects.

Usually, Shain teaches a science classduring the summer. This year, she wanteda break from teaching and applied for thefellowship. She said it was the rightmatch between a personal interest andsomething she could incorporate into thecurriculum.

�I can spend some time doing some-thing for school and learning in theprocess, but also something that providesa new learning opportunity for me,� Shainsaid.

For O�Hearn, the chance to studyGothic architecture will make the Gothicnovels she teaches in American andBritish literature more understandable.

�The landscape in the Gothic novelalways mirrors the mood of the novel,�O�Hearn said. �It�s always dreary or onsome moor or by a castle. I�m also inter-ested in the old Gothic structures, and thebest are in Europe.�

Traveling through France, Italy andEngland, O�Hearn will stay at some cas-tles and learn more about architecture.

She said the trip will give her the back-ground to explain to her students how thearchitecture in the novels they are readingrelates to the story.

Hawkins is getting in shape for themore than 250 miles she will hike acrossIndiana this summer by exercising on hertreadmill.

She�ll also use her hiking experienceas the inspiration to write four originalpoems about Indiana�s landscape.

Many times, students don�t like towrite poems about Indiana because theythink it�s boring, she said.

By learning how to take stock of theIndiana landscape herself, she can helpthe students be more creative at poetrywriting, she said.

�Usually, I�ve always had a second jobin the summer,� Hawkins said. �And I�malways indoors. This will let me spendmore time outdoors and see what Indianahas to offer.� �

Dinner has more than doubled since theevent began five years ago, said JamesSchellinger, the event chair.

�I�m intrigued by the title �Spirit ofService,� � Erskine said. �I think service isa spiritual experience.�

He said that it is hard to tell who gainsmore benefits from service�those servedor those serving. He also said that thosewho volunteer their time for others trulyhave the �eyes to see� the need aroundthem.

�A lot of people walk through life �and they do not see, realize, understand,that all around them are people who are inneed,� he said. �And they either don�t wantto see it or just fail to see it.�

Erskine pitched for the BrooklynDodgers from 1948-57 and for the LosAngeles Dodgers from 1958-59. He pitchedtwo no-hitters and broke the World Seriesstrikeout record for a single game with14 strikeouts in 1953.

Erskine spent his retirement coachingbaseball and becoming involved in hiscommunity and various charitable causes.

Erskine entertained the crowd with base-ball stories from the past and some from hispersonal life. He spoke of the days when,as he put it, baseballs were white and sowere all of the players.

�We were a segregated country,� he said.But then, in 1947, Branch Rickey, the

president and general manager of theDodgers, made history by putting the firstblack major league ball player, JackieRobinson, on the field.

�Jackie experienced what none of uscould imagine,� Erskine said, �beingaccused just because he was different.�

Erskine said he has great admiration forthe courage Robinson displayed in breakingthe color barrier in baseball.

In 1960, Erskine became the father ofhis fourth child, Jimmy. But, right away, heknew something was wrong.

The doctor told him that Jimmy was a�mongoloid��an archaic term for sayingthat Jimmy had Down syndrome.

At first, Erskine was frustrated to have achild with such physical barriers ahead ofhim, after just leaving a team of great ath-letes.

Then it hit him. �Jimmy�s facing aboutthe same kind of barriers Jackie did,� hesaid. �What a parallel.�

Raising Jimmy wasn�t easy. It was acause for celebration when Jimmy could tiehis shoes by himself�at 18 years old.

Jimmy is now 43 and works at anApplebee�s Restaurant, setting up tablesbefore opening. His boss says that peoplework with each other better when Jimmy isaround.

�He has come so far,� Erskine said.Near the end of his presentation, Erskine

showed the audience his World Series Ringthat he had retrieved from a lock box forthe event. The Brooklyn Dodgers won theWorld Series in 1955.

�I look at this ring, I think about the daythey handed them to the team, I rememberthe look on the team�s faces,� he said. �[I

said] to myself, could there be anything inthis world as a reward better than that?�

Years after receiving that ring, his son,Jimmy, was competing in the SpecialOlympics in swimming.

At the end of the race, Erskine said,�They hauled him out of the water, theystood him up on the award stand, on thetop level, and they hung this gold medalaround his neck. He won a 50-meterfreestyle.�

Erskine held up the shimmering medal.�Let me tell you, I think this is better,� hesaid.

�They expected us to win,� he said ofthe Dodgers 1955 victory. �They expectedus to win. Who expected this kind of per-formance [from Jimmy]?�

�Any time you give somebody encour-agement, as was given Jackie and wasgiven Jimmy, you have the eyes to see anddo that,� Erskine said.

Bart Peterson, mayor of Indianapolis,attended the dinner and said that theaward winners �represent the spirit of ser-vice, they represent the spirit ofIndianapolis.�

Peterson told the more than 700 peoplein attendance that the services provided byCSS are essential and make differences inpeoples� lives each day.

He said that he is often asked what hasbeen the most surprising thing for himsince he took office.

�I had no idea how much good work isgoing on in our community,� Petersonsaid, �how many people are reaching outbeyond themselves, helping people whothey could never reasonably expect any-thing in return from.

�And I can think of no better exampleof that than Catholic Social Services,� headded.

David Bethuram, executive director ofCSS and the Office for Family Ministries,said that CSS helped more than 60,800people last year. Among those people,11,550 were helped with temporary shel-ter, food, clothing and job assistance,while 558 people were helped in the ElderCare program.

�More people than ever before arerequesting our services,� he said.�Because of the generosity of our donorsand volunteers, we�ve been able to con-tinue to provide quality service to theincreasing numbers of individuals andfamilies in need.�

Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein wasthere to personally give each Spirit ofService award to the recipients.

�Jesus Christ and our Church call eachof us to be attentive to the poor, to beadvocates for the disenfranchised, to servethose who society rejects,� the archbishopsaid.

�Jesus always put those in the marginof society � at the center of his concernand his ministry, and we�re called to dothe same,� he said.

The archbishop congratulated theaward winners and called them rolemodels.

�Your service to others encourages allof us,� he said. �Your lives and your giftsof self provide all of us with examples ofcharity in a very real world.� �

“The Many Faces of Our Church: A Letter to Our Catholic Faithful Regarding Our Cultural Diversity” wasmore than a letter to be read and then shelved by Catholics in the Diocese of Gary, Ind. Bishop Dale J.Melczek asked the faithful to read and then act on ways to address and celebrate cultural diversity.

Northwest Indiana is similar to otherurban areas in the United States�a muralof various cultures and ethnic and racialbackgrounds.

What the mural doesn�t always revealare the tensions and hostilities that havearisen among the people who comprise it.

When he was appointed apostolicadministrator of the Diocese of Gary in1992, Bishop Dale J. Melczek was wellaware of the racial and ethnic divisionsthat had infected the diocese.

From that point through his appoint-ment as diocesan bishop in 1996 and upto the present, he has made addressing�the sin of racism� a pastoral priority.

In June 2002, he issued his first pas-toral letter��The Many Faces of OurChurch: A Letter to Our Catholic FaithfulRegarding Our Cultural Diversity��as apreliminary step to a letter on racism.

But �The Many Faces of Our Church�was more than a letter to be read and thenshelved. Bishop Melczek asked the faithfulto read and then to �prayerfully considerand discuss its contents with others.�

Talking about it, however, was notenough.

The bishop offered points upon whichhe asked the Catholic community to act,for example, the writing of a parish cul-tural history for publication in the dioce-san newspaper, sponsoring an event inJanuary or February 2003 that wouldacknowledge and affirm �the ethnic/racialdiversity of the parish,� and hosting litur-gical, educational and social opportunitiesopen to members of other parishes and to

non-Catholics.Bishop Melczek provided a historical

perspective on the blending of cultures byhighlighting two models: the �meltingpot� and the �mosaic.�

The former, he noted, encouraged�newly arrived people to shed the culturethat had hitherto identified them and tolearn everything which was deemed to be�truly American.� �

The bishop said, �Of course, it was thepeople of wealth and power, serving asthe gatekeepers of America, who held upthis image and defined what it meant.�

Of the mosaic model, he wrote: �Justas a mosaic is made up of many differ-ently shaped colored pieces whose place-ment together composes a picture thatwould not look as beautiful or uniquewere the pieces all the same shape andcolor, so the many ethnic/racial groupscan be viewed as being good in and ofthemselves. It is precisely the existenceand mix of these groups that renders therichness of detail that gives shape to theportrait of America in general, and north-west Indiana in particular.�

He said �mystification��when the tra-ditions, customs, rituals and patternsunique to one culture are alien to thoseoutside that culture�is one of the rootsof racism.

�Just as fear is usually not far from thedoor of ignorance, so that which is aliencan cause feelings of insecurity and easilybe viewed as a threat,� he wrote.

The �demystification� process beginswhen members of one culture invitemembers of another into their world,Bishop Melczek said. To that end, he

encouraged parishes to gather for multi-ethnic events�involving food and song,for example�in order to experience eachother�s world.

�Such a process enables the other tobegin to see the world from another per-son�s perspective and to feel more com-fortable in that world,� he noted. �It is byparticipation in the world of another cul-ture that the process of demystificationtakes place.�

Bishop Melczek issued a study guideand had facilitators trained to lead studysessions on the pastoral letter. Five90-minute discussion sessions were heldin the fall of 2002 and during Lent in2003.

The discussion sessions were basedupon questions that included:

Do you think the model of the mosaiccould serve as a good means of viewingnorthwest Indiana?

How do you feel about the pattern ofcultural segregation within our region?

Is there another side to the reaction offlight (from changing neighborhoods)?

Lest the pastoral letter become �readand dead,� Bishop Melczek emphasized

that it was a process, not a one-shot pro-gram.

�This letter marks the start of a three-year journey,� he wrote. �At times, wewill make great strides, while at othertimes we will move more slowly.However far we progress, keep in mindthat, more than anything else, Jesus callsus�his disciples�to live and witnesstogether in unity and charity.�

In the pastoral letter�s introduction,Bishop Melczek said that in 2003 hewould �issue another pastoral letterregarding the sin of racism, which isclearly the greatest threat in our own dayto cooperation among cultures and races,and which prevents the image of Godfrom being clearly visible in our commu-nal life.�

For the bishop and the 185,000Catholics in the Diocese of Gary, theprocess of addressing the sin of�and theinfection caused by�racism is wellunder way.

The Diocese of Winona, Minn., hasbecome a global village, Bishop BernardHarrington of Winona, Minn., wroterecently.

He was referring to the growing cul-tural diversity of the diocese located insoutheastern Minnesota.

�Generations harking back to Irish,German and Polish settlers have beenjoined by new immigrants from Mexico,Sudan and Vietnam,� he noted. �The faceof our liturgy has changed as Spanish andbilingual Masses become more common.At times, parishes are strained in theeffort to build bridges to connect cultural

groups. But, build we must.�There is a need for a welcoming spirit

in parishes so new arrivals feel at home.But just a welcome isn�t enough. Peoplewant to feel they belong, and that this is�their parish,� too. And everyone wantsrespect�in this case, respect that honorstheir cultural heritage.

The U.S. bishops said in 2000 that,while �misunderstanding, ignorance,competition and fear� often stand in theway, there is a need �to get beyond ethniccommunities living side by side withinour own parishes without any connectionwith each other.�

Pope Innocent III gave his approval tothe religious order founded by St. Francis

of Assisi, known for-mally as the Order ofFriars Minor, onApril 16, 1209. That�sthe 28th on my list ofthe 50 most importantevents in Catholic his-tory.

The small band of12 humble men whoaccompanied Francis

to Rome has grown to become the largestreligious order in the Catholic Churchwhen one includes the various orders thatsplit off from the original. The FriarsMinors by themselves are second only tothe Jesuits, with 17,556 members (as ofthe year 2000; the Jesuits had 21,633).

The Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, abranch of the order that was established asa separate jurisdiction in 1528, is fourthon the list with 11,340 members. Anotherbranch, the Order of Friars MinorConventuals, is 12th on the list with

4,564 members.St. Francis also founded the Second

Order of St. Francis for women in 1212.This order came to be known as the PoorClares for its first superior, St. Clare.Then he wrote a rule for laypeople whowanted to share in the goals and life ofthe Franciscans. This group, originallyknown as the Third Order of Francis-cans, is known today as the SecularFranciscan Order. Today, it has about780,000 members worldwide, 18,000 inthe U.S.

Having founded his order, Francis trav-eled to other countries. In 1214, he triedto go to the Holy Land but was ship-wrecked. He made it to Egypt during theFifth Crusade and met with the Muslimsultan, who was so impressed with the lit-tle friar that he permitted him to visit thesacred shrines in the Holy Land. That waslater to lead to the Franciscans beinggranted the Custody of the Holy Land, arole that is continuing today.

It was also to lead to missionary workon the part of Franciscans. By the 15thand 16th centuries, Franciscan friars wereworking in China and Africa and were

Sin is so attractive, isn�t it? They say thereason babies are so cute is because they�re

so much bother weprobably wouldn�twant to bother withthem if they weren�t.It�s the same withsin�knowing the con-sequences and all,we�d probably neversin if sinning weren�tso darn appealing.

That is, until lately.Although we�ve been heading down thisroad for some time, it seems to me we�vefinally hit a point where sin is no longerattractive but, as it should be truthfullydepicted, downright disgusting.

I refer to two movies made recently asreported in Time magazine and elsewhere.One is entitled The Real Cancun and isnow in theaters. The other, The Quest, hasnot yet been released.

The Cancun epic involves the Mexicanspring break antics of 16 young women andmen behaving badly. Among other ingredi-ents of the film, there�s the obligatory vir-gin whom everyone tries to corrupt, con-stant boozing and a bonus feature in theform of female twins. The titillating possi-

bilities of this fact simply boggle the mind.The second film is a quest by six young

men to help a nerdy friend lose his virginity.More drunkenness and debauchery. Doesthis theme sound familiar? Where is anX rating when we need one?

Now, while I have not seen either filmand would rather die than do so, theirpremises sound outrageous to me.Ordinarily, I don�t approve of criticizingsomething I have not seen personally, but inthis case I believe I�ll make an exception.

Frankly, I thought we�d gone about asfar as we could go. We�ve ratcheted upfrom mild distaste in watching people eatworms to guilty squirming at the sight of�survivors� cruelly blackballing each other.We�ve seen strangers trying to get eachother out on dates (that is, into bedtogether), sometimes with the help of theirparents!

We�ve watched pathetic people hopingfor some imagined kind of celebrity bymaking fools of themselves and each other.And, we�ve observed that greatest of allpathetic �celebrities,� Monica Lewinsky,adding her lack of talent to a vulgar datingshow as a kind of host/matchmaker/madam.

And then, speaking of Monica, there arethe politicians whose sexual shenanigans

It is a well-established fact that therehas been a dramatic decline in Mass atten-

dance in the last50 years. In the 1950s,about 75 percent ofCatholics attendedMass on a weeklybasis. Since then, thepercentage ofCatholics attendingMass each weekslipped to 66 percentin 1970, 53 percent in

the mid-1980s, about 40 percent in themid-1990s and only 37 percent in 1999.The percentage of Catholics attendingMass each week is now about half of whatit was 50 years ago.

How are we to explain this trend? Thereare two leading hypotheses. One is that thedecline is largely a function of societalconditions outside the Church. Accordingto this perspective, the decline reflects theincreased secularization of American soci-ety and/or the cultural revolution of the1960s, when the culture shifted from anemphasis on compliance with institutionalnorms and values to an emphasis on per-sonal freedom.

If this hypothesis were true, we mightexpect church attendance rates to declinefor the society as a whole and in otherreligious groups as well as the CatholicChurch. But, neither of these things hasoccurred.

There has been no major change inchurch attendance rates for the society asa whole since Gallup began polling onthis issue back to the late 1930s. Sincethat time, church attendance rates haveheld steady at 41 percent.

Also, church attendance rates have notdeclined for Protestants. In the late 1950sand early 1960s, about 44 percent ofProtestants attended church every week.By the mid-1960s, that figure had slippedto 37, 38 or 39 percent (depending on theyear of the survey). With only minor fluc-tuations, it has remained quite stable eversince.

Over this same time period, however,Mass attendance has continued to decline.As a result, I lean toward the alternativehypothesis that the decline has more to dowith changing conditions in the Church.

With the decline of the Catholic ghettoof the 1940s and �50s, the structure ofAmerican Catholicism changed dramati-cally. Catholics are no longer segregatedfrom the rest of society and no longer asdependent on the Church.

Catholics� image of the Creator as ajudgmental God who would condemn peo-ple to hell if they missed Mass has givenway to an image of God as much morewilling to forgive people who do not makeit to Mass every week.

There also has been a marked declinein episcopal authority. Father AndrewGreeley traces this decline to Pope PaulVI�s decision in 1968 to uphold theChurch�s ban on artificial means of birthcontrol. I contend that it has numeroussources, including the rising levels of edu-cation among laypeople. Whatever its ori-gins, the decline in episcopal authoritypreceded last year�s sex scandal andalmost certainly has continued in its wake.As a result, Church leaders are no longerable to command the high levels of reli-gious practice that existed in the 1950s.

Protestants and other Americans havenot experienced these changes, and theirrates of church attendance have notdeclined. These changes are peculiar toAmerican Catholicism and, I believe, go along way toward explaining the decline inMass attendance among Catholics.

Need excellentcommunication and organizational skills.Must be willing to work variable hours allweek with frequent 24-hour shifts. Travelrequired for camping, sports, school andmedical/health events. (Travel expenses notreimbursed.)

Responsibilities: Hope for the best, but

prepare for the worst. Have the patience ofa saint and the expertise of a peacemaker.Be indispensable one minute and an embar-rassment the next. Have the stamina of apack mule and the expertise of a cook,housekeeper, teacher, nurse, time manager,chauffeur, gardener, money manager, psy-chologist and party planner�usually work-ing under pressure. Must be good exampleof religious, social, political and environ-mental duties.

Possibility for Advancement/Promotion: Virtually none�until deathand �The Eternal Reward.� During lifetime,must stay in same position without com-plaining, constantly retraining yourself andupdating skills so that those in your chargecan ultimately surpass you.

Why is Massattendancedeclining?

Important events: Franciscan Order foundedimportant in Christianizing the natives inthe New World. Father Junipero Serra,founder of California�s missions, was aFranciscan.

As his order grew, Francis reluctantlyaccepted the fact that he would have torevise his original rule. Pope Honorius IIIapproved the new rule on Nov. 29, 1223.After that, Francis let others handle theaffairs of the order and he withdrew fromthe world. His health and his eyesight weredeteriorating. In September 1224, hereceived the stigmata, the wounds of Christ.

Francis died on Oct. 3, 1226, and PopeGregory IX canonized him only two yearslater. He has always been one of theChurch�s most beloved saints. St. Bona-venture wrote his official biography in1263.

Three Franciscan friars have becomepopes: Sixtus IV (1471-84), Sixtus V(1585-90) and Clement XIV (1769-1774).

The order has also produced somegreat saints and theologians. Among themare St. Bonaventure, St. Anthony ofPadua, St. Bernardine of Siena, St. Law-rence of Bridisi, John Duns Scotus, andRoger Bacon. �

are public knowledge, not to mention theirother moral lapses. And we all know aboutthe executives of giant corporations whosegreed is matched only by their hubris, andthe clergy whose failings continue to scan-dalize the faithful.

Sin seems to be so flagrant and so dra-matic in these times, not to mention so pub-lic, that most of our confessions on Satur-day afternoons must pale by comparison.Our taking the Lord�s name in vain, losingour tempers or neglecting to share ourworldly goods with the poor hardly qualify.

But here�s the sneaky way the devilworks. He lulls us into believing a) that heprobably does not exist, and b) that we�renot so bad after all. The Enron guys or O.J.Simpson or Saddam Hussein are really infor it when the final judgment comes, wethink, but we�re undoubtedly on the fasttrack to heaven.

Well no, not really. Sin is sin, and intentis everything. We�ll get our lumps one day.Still, the failings we see on public viewtoday are so offensive that we might justgive up sin altogether. What a thought.

Recently I read in a New York Timesbook review about A Potent Spell: MotherLove and the Power of Fear by JannaMalmud Smith. The reviewer, Ann Hulbert(author of Raising America: Experts,Parents, and a Century of Advice aboutChildren) ends her review with, �Mothersare emphatically burden bearers.�

Although how children turn out affectsus all deeply, the burden of responsibilityfor the success or failure of our children isone burden too many. However, we areaccountable to God.

The Acts of the Apostles again is thesource of an Easter season weekend�s first

reading.In this weekend�s

reading, Peter oncemore is the spokesmanfor the Apostles. Thereading notes thatPeter is filled with theHoly Spirit. In otherwords, Simon Peter isnot speaking on hisown. He is inspired.

Peter refers to a miracle. He hasrestored a crippled person to wholeness.Peter emphasizes that this miraculousevent came not as the result of his ownpower, or of any earthly, human power,but rather through the power of Jesus.

Peter makes it clear that the Jesuswhose power cured the crippled man ofthe disability is indeed the Jesus ofNazareth who was crucified on Calvary.He was the gift of God, the Savior. He isthe cornerstone of eternal life itself. Healone is the source of God�s favor andeverlasting life.

The First Epistle of John provides thesecond reading.

These three epistles, given the nameof John, the Apostle, are alike in theirdeep theology as well as in their superbuse of language.

This reading declares true believers tobe �children of God.� It is a powerfulterm. It should not be tossed aside ordiscounted. Through Jesus, and in Jesus,believers become much more thanmerely the creatures of God. Theybecome God�s children.

In a most special sense, God is theirFather. The Scriptures have many othertitles and names for God. He is the mas-ter, the creator, the king and the almighty.In this reading, God is the Father. Thetitle conveys the relationship between achild and an earthly father.

As its final reading, this weekend�sLiturgy of the Word offers the passagefrom St. John�s Gospel in which Jesus isdescribed as the Good Shepherd.

This title is not unique to this particu-lar reading or to John�s Gospel. Itoccurred elsewhere in the NewTestament.

Still, the treatment here of this imageryis magnificent and most compelling. It lit-erally soars in its message. Jesus not onlyleads the sheep, but also risks everything,even life itself, for the sheep.

Jesus is God�s gift.A secondary lesson is in the fact that

we are sheep. Sheep are not aggressive.They are not predators. They easily arethe prey of vicious enemies. Indeed, ene-mies hunt for them and capitalize on theirinnocence and vulnerability. Thus it iswith humans, exposed to the dangers ofsin and to the meanness of sinful persons.The Lord is our shield.

ReflectionFor weeks, the Church has celebrated

the Resurrection. It still celebrates thisweekend. In these readings, the Churchreminds us that the Resurrection was notjust a stupendous event that came andwent long ago.

Instead, it is with us now. Essential toeternal life itself is a contemporary, totaland absolute commitment to God,through the Lord Jesus.

As First John tells us in the secondreading, in Jesus we become children ofGod. God is more than our Creator. He isour loving Father, but our access to Godis in our faith in Jesus.

Jesus is our Good Shepherd. Fewwould ever deny for a moment themajesty and compassion of Jesus.Understandably, the Lord�s power waswith Peter as Peter restored the crippledman to wholeness.

What we humans everlastingly ignore isour own vulnerability and limitations. Weare much at the mercy of unfriendly anddevious forces. Some of these forces havehuman faces. Others do not. Nevertheless,these forces are real and lie in wait todestroy us. We must admit this fact.

Jesus is our strong, loving and givingGood Shepherd. He leads us to eternallife. In Jesus, we aptly place our trust.Indeed, no one else is worthy of our trust.

He lives! His Resurrection has aneffect even today, for each of us, every-where, at every time. �

Wondrous the Things He Does

QIt would be a big help if you wouldexplain our present Catholic teach-

ing about evolution.Years ago, we weretold that evolutiondenied God�s creationof the human race.Then we read that ourpresent popeapproved belief in thetheory of evolution.What is the story?(Indiana)

AThe evolution you speak of is, Iassume, the evolving of human bod-

ies from other living beings that livedon earth before human beings appeared.

A lot of conflicting interpretations ofCatholic doctrines about this subjecthave floated around during the past200 years or so, some of them withouteither scientific or theological founda-tion.

Today it is clear that no Catholicdogma conflicts with such a theory ofevolution. As long ago as 1950, PopePius XII, in his encyclical �HumaniGeneris,� maintained that the Churchhas no problem with the study of evolu-tion by scientists and theologians.

The research, he said, which �inquiresinto the origin of the human body as com-ing from pre-existent and living matter,�creates no difficulty for Catholic belief aslong as we accept that the spiritual �part�of our nature, what we call the soul, isimmediately created by God (#36).

On Oct. 22, 1996, addressing thePontifical Academy of Sciences, PopeJohn Paul II agreed that new knowledgeleads us now to recognize that thetheory of evolution is more than ahypothesis, more than a mere scientificconjecture or assumption.

The pope makes two important pointsin this address.

First, we must exercise extreme cau-tion when we attempt to find answers toscientific questions in the Bible.

Four years earlier, the Holy Fatherattributed the Church�s condemnation ofGalileo to the fact that the majority oftheologians did not make a proper dis-tinction between holy Scripture itselfand the interpretation given to it byBible scholars and other theologians.

(Most everyone must be aware bynow that the great 17th-century

astronomer, Galileo, was punished bythe Church, held under house arrest andforbidden to distribute his writingsbecause he taught that the sun did notrevolve around the Earth. This was con-sidered to contradict the Bible, whichspeaks rather of the sun moving, goingup and coming down around the Earth.See, for instance, Jos 10:12-13.)

Theologians of Galileo�s day, saidPope John Paul in his 1996 address, didnot make this proper distinction andthus made Scripture �say what it doesnot intend to say.�

The Bible cannot be forced to answerscientific questions, like evolution or themovement of the stars, for example.Thus, says Pope John Paul, theologiansand Scripture scholars cannot do theirjobs properly unless they keep informedabout what is happening in the sciences.

Second, the evolution theory, or anyother established hypothesis, alwaysneeds to be tested against the facts. Asinformation gathers that fits the theory,its explanation of how life, includinghuman life, developed on our planetbecomes more and more probable.

According to Pope John Paul, and byfar most Catholic officials and theolo-gians today, the facts converging frommany fields of human knowledge (geol-ogy, anthropology, psychology and soon) create a progressively �significantargument in favor of this theory.�

�Looking back and remembering thoseyears of my life, I can assure you that it isworth it to dedicate yourself to the cause ofChrist and, for love of him, to consecrateyourself to serving humanity,� he told theyoung people, many of whom were noteven born when he was elected pope in1978.

When the chants continued to interrupthis speech, despite the fact the event hadalready gone an hour overtime, the popeasked, �How long are we going to stayhere? I must finish.�

The pope told them to be like the saintshe was about to canonize, unafraid of pro-claiming the Gospel message to all.

�It is everyone�s task,� he said. �Christ isthe true answer to every question about thehuman person and his destiny.�

The new saints, all of whom died in the20th century, are Father Pedro Poveda, mar-tyr and founder of the Teresian Associationfor lay people; Jesuit Father Jose MariaRubio, a famed preacher and worker amongMadrid�s poor; Sister Genoveva TorresMorales, founder of the Sisters of theSacred Heart of Jesus and the Holy Angels,known as the Angelicas; Sister MariaGuerrero Gonzalez, known as Sister Angelade la Cruz, founder of the Sisters of theCross; and Discalced Carmelite SisterMaria Pidal Chico de Guzman, known asSister Maravillas de Jesus, a mystic andfounder of several cloistered monasteries.

They gave their lives to God and to serv-ing others and today�s Catholics must dothe same, the pope said at the Mass.

�Other fruits of holiness will be born if

�We also thank you, Holy Father, foryour repeated condemnation of terrorism,which is intrinsically perverse and never jus-tifiable, and from which we Spaniards inparticular suffer,� King Juan Carlos said,referring to Basque separatists accused ofkilling more than 830 people since 1968.

Although he did not mention the strugglefor Basque independence, the pope did tellthe young people on May 3 he was con-cerned about the hatred and death provokedby violence, terrorism and war.

�Respond to blind violence and inhumanhatred with the fascinating power of love,�he told them. �Defeat enmity with the powerof forgiveness. Keep yourselves away fromevery form of exaggerated nationalism,

Death penalty opponents from severalfaith traditions stood in the rain in front ofthe Governor�s Residence in Indianapolison May 1 to speak out against capitalpunishment during the final hours leadingup to the state-ordered execution ofIndiana death row inmate Kevin L.Hough at the Michigan City penitentiary.

They knew Hough would die by chem-ical injection because all his legal appealshad been exhausted, but they stood in therain and held protest signs anyway.

Hough had asked Indiana Gov. FrankO�Bannon to commute his death sentenceto life in prison without parole, but thegovernor denied his request.

St. Roch parishioner Steve Schutte ofIndianapolis, an attorney and vice presi-dent of the Indiana Information Center onthe Abolition of Capital Punishment,joined a small group of death penaltyopponents in front of the Governor�sResidence last week to protest the May 2execution.

�It�s very disturbing that as a societywe have chosen to kill people justbecause we can,� Schutte said. �KevinHough is the perfect example of that.He�s a poor and essentially defenselessman, and yet, because we can, we�ve cho-sen to kill him.�

Hough was the 10th Indiana death rowinmate to be executed since the state re-instituted capital punishment in 1977.

�You can�t teach someone that stealingis wrong by stealing from them,� Schuttesaid. �You can�t teach someone that lyingis wrong by lying to them. And you can�tteach people that killing is wrong bykilling, especially killing someone justbecause we can. We don�t have to killKevin Hough. He�s no danger to anyoneany longer and everyone agrees with

St. Susanna parishioner KarenBurkhart of Plainfield, the Indiana deathpenalty abolition coordinator for AmnestyInternational, said the execution of KevinHough by the state of Indiana constitutesa violation of fundamental human rights.

�Amnesty International has the utmostsympathy for the victims of violent crimeand their families,� Burkhart said, �butopposes the death penalty in all cases.�

Burkhart said international humanrights standards require that capital defen-dants be provided adequate legal repre-sentation at all stages of the proceedings,including the appeal stage, above andbeyond the protection afforded in non-capital cases.

�I find in that great reason to be opti-mistic,� he said. �More and more states,more and more state legislatures, moreand more governors, more and morecourts, are realizing that the death penaltydoesn�t work. Quite aside from whetherwe should do it or not, it simply doesn�twork. It�s terribly expensive, it�s racistand there�s too much margin for error.�

Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein alsospoke out against the execution of Houghin an April 28 letter to Gov. O�Bannon.

�I write to you again to ask forclemency for a condemned man,�Archbishop Buechlein said in the letter.�Please spare the life of Kevin L. Hough.�

Citing Church teachings, the arch-bishop noted, �As you know from ourprevious correspondence and meetings,the Roman Catholic Church believes thatexecuting Mr. Hough will only continuethe cycle of violence and further the cul-ture of death that is infecting our society.�

The archbishop said he is praying forthe victims in this case�Martin Rubrake,Ted Bosler and Antoni Bartkowiak�andfor their families. Hough was convictedof murdering the men in Fort Wayne in1985.

�We recognize the importance of justlypunishing people who commit crimes, butwe believe the appropriate punishment formurder would be life imprisonment with-out the possibility of parole,� the arch-bishop said.

Being in love with the Lord and expressing their loverelationship with God is the main goal of all the religious

we know.By giving their lives to God,

priests, brothers and sisters will betruly blessed. They have expressedtheir love for God by saying yes tohim when he called them to religiouslife.

We know that they are holybecause when we speak to them orare near them we feel happy and hon-ored.

Those in religious life are examples to all people. Theyremind us of the importance of placing God first in ourlives.

The religious life consists in following the three evan-gelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience. Inorder to keep each one, they willingly give up certainthings in their life: money, possessions, marriage and lib-erty.

�Under the impulse of love, which the Holy Spirit

pours into their hearts, they live more and more for Christand for his Body, the Church. The more fervently, there-fore, they join themselves to Christ by this gift of theirwhole life, the fuller does the Church�s life become andthe more vigorous and fruitful its apostolate� (�PerfectaeCaritatis,� �Decree on the Up-to-date Renewal ofReligious Life,� Oct. 28, 1965).

The call to the priesthood or the religious life is avocation to follow Christ most perfectly on earth.

The priestly and religious life�s goals are ones that we,as Catholic Christians, all share: to follow Christ and ulti-mately to be with God in heaven forever.

Everyone must try to find out what God calls him orher to. The consecrated life calls for great generosity andselflessness.

There are communities for men and for women. Inboth, the members live a community life according to aparticular rule.

The contemplative orders spend their days in prayer.Other religious communities dedicate themselves to a

more active service of God and neighbor by engaging invarious works of mercy, both corporal and spiritual.These active orders may operate schools, hospitals,orphanages, visit prisons or care for the dying. The

active orders must always have prayer as the basis forall their work.

We should pray to know if this is God�s will for us.Even if this isn�t our vocation, we should pray for

those who are called. So, as you see, �The harvest is plen-tiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord ofthe harvest to send out laborers into this harvest�(Mt 9:37-38).

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (CNS)�FatherFrank Pavone, a priest of the New YorkArchdiocese who is international directorof Priests for Life, said there are a num-ber of actions every Catholic and everyparish can do to end abortion.

Above all, Catholics should pray for anend to abortion, Father Pavone said. �It�sa simple thing you can do,� he said at anApril 27 talk sponsored by the JolietDiocese�s pro-life office.

But he also suggested that parishessupport crisis pregnancy organizationsand local shelters that help pregnantwomen in need, and hold fund-raisers tohelp Churches assist women and theirfamilies facing crisis pregnancies.

Parishes also should offer some kind ofpost-abortion ministry to help women and

them, he said.Yet many types of surgery are broad-

cast daily on television, he noted. �Whynot the most common�abortion?� Toeducate people about the problem withabortion, �they must see it,� he said.

Priests for Life recommends that pro-life supporters illustrate the abortion pro-cedure with real pictures on rally signs.�This gives evidence that abortion actu-ally kills,� Father Pavone said.

Priests for Life, which is based inStaten Island, N.Y., is currently workingon matching the country�s 19,000-plusCatholic parishes with the remaining715 free-standing abortion clinics to prayfor their closure. Each termination of a pregnancy is �anew tragedy� and �needs a newresponse,� he told his Joliet audience.

He used the scenario of a fire to makehis point. When a fire breaks out, fire-fighters rush to the location of the blazeto help save people who are in immediatedanger, he said. Firefighters may pray onthe way, but they do not stop to have aprayer service, he said.

In the same vein, �you must go to thekilling centers,� he said, referring to abor-tion clinics.

In this day and age, the word �abor-tion� has lost its meaning, according toFather Pavone. Abortions are performed,but the general public does not witness

their families heal, Father Pavone said.He also encouraged everybody to con-stantly write letters to the editors of news-papers in their area to speak out againstabortion.

Another part of the abortion battle is�to change public policy by electing theright people into office,� said FatherPavone.

To that end, Priests for Life offersparishes free election-related materials�none of which, as the law requires,endorse any particular candidates or polit-ical parties. And in a new initiative, it isalso encouraging Churches to create on-site voter registration facilities to remindcitizens of their obligation to vote.

This has been a common experience with diocesan seminarians in Indianasince 1986 when the Knights of Columbus i n Indiana began sending themchecks at Christmas time.The money comes from a S.O.S. Fund which stands for Support OurSeminarians. Indiana Knights add a dol lar or two to their dues paymentsand to date, have given away more than $300,000 to diocesan seminarians.There are no strings attached to these checks. It is simply another way theKnights of Columbus encourage vocations to the religious life.This Christmas, each diocesan seminarian, maybe a young man from yourparish, received a check for $425.00 from the Knights. Providence Sister FrancesRees, also known as SisterMary Pauline, died on April 24in Karcher Hall at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. She was 67.

The Mass of ChristianBurial was celebrated onApril 30 in the Church of theImmaculate Conception atSaint Mary-of-the-Woods.Burial followed in the sisters�cemetery.

The former Frances AnnRees was born on Dec. 20,1935, in Jasper, Ind. Sheentered the congregation of theSisters of Providence on Jan. 6,1953, professed first vows onAug. 15, 1955, and professedfinal vows on Aug. 15, 1960.

Sister Frances taught in ele-mentary schools staffed by theSisters of Providence inIndiana, Illinois, California andMichigan for 21 years. In thearchdiocese, she taught at theformer Holy Trinity School inNew Albany from 1966-68 andat Holy Spirit School in

Indianapolis from 1975-76.Sister Frances also served in

a family prayer ministry in dio-ceses in Tennessee, Kentucky,Ohio and Indiana as well as inparish ministry as a pastoralassociate and adult religiouseducation coordinator.

From 1980-81, she served aspastoral associate at St. MichaelParish in Cannelton and St. PiusParish in Troy. She ministeredas pastoral associate atSt. Matthew Parish inIndianapolis in 1991-93.

From 1993-2003, SisterFrances ministered in therapeu-tic massage at the HermitageRetreat Center, now theCordiafonte House of Prayer, inIndianapolis.

Surviving are a sister, AnnRobison of Brownsburg, and abrother, Ray Rees of Jasper,Ind., as well as nieces andnephews, grand-nieces andgrand-nephews, and great-grandnieces and great-grand-nephews. �

A Mass of Christian Burialfor Franciscan Sister MarieElizabeth Hieb was celebratedon May 1 in the motherhousechapel of the congregation ofthe Sisters of the Third Order ofSt. Francis in Oldenburg.

Burial followed in the sis-ters� cemetery.

Sister Marie Elizabeth, for-merly known as Sister LouisAnn, died on April 29. Shewas 92.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, sheentered the Oldenburg Francis-can community in 1930 and pro-fessed her final vows in 1936.

Sister Marie Elizabethtaught in Catholic schools for48 years. In the archdiocese,she taught at St. Joseph Schoolin Shelbyville, the former

St. Bridget School and the for-mer St. Francis de Sales Schoolin Indianapolis, and St. PaulSchool in New Alsace.

She also taught at St. JosephSchool in Evansville, Ind., inthe Evansville Diocese, and inOhio.

In 1981, Sister MarieElizabeth made her residence atthe Franciscan motherhouse,where she ministered for 10years in domestic service to thecommunity in the convent area.

In 1991, she retired toSt. Clare Hall, the health carefacility for the OldenburgFranciscans.

She is survived by a sister,Edna Pitstick of Cedarville,Ohio. �

James D. Villa, a member ofSt. Patrick Parish in TerreHaute and the father of FatherJoseph Villa, died on April 19at his residence. He was 83.

The Mass of ChristianBurial was celebrated onApril 22 at St. Patrick Churchin Terre Haute.

Father Villa, the pastor ofSacred Heart Parish in Clintonand St. Joseph Parish in Rock-ville and the administrator ofSt. Joseph Parish in Universal,celebrated the funeral Mass.

Burial followed in RoselawnCemetery.

James D. Villa was a veteranof World War II.

Survivors, in addition toFather Villa, are two sons,James D. Villa Jr. of FortWayne and John Villa ofChicago; a daughter, NancyAdams of Indianapolis; twosisters, Irene Dal Sasso andRuth Ann Ferrare, both ofClinton; several grandchildrenand several great-grandchil-dren. �

Leon �Lee� A. Fritsch, amember of Annunciation Parishin Brazil and the father ofFather Michael Fritsch, died onApril 29 at St. Vincent ClayHospital in Brazil. He was 79.

The Mass of ChristianBurial was celebrated on May 3at Annunciation Church inBrazil.

Father Fritsch, the pastor ofSt. John the Apostle Parish inBloomington, was the principalcelebrant for the funeral Mass.

Burial followed at Clearview

Cemetery in Brazil.Leon Fritsch was a pilot in

the U.S. Air Force and a vet-eran of World War II. He was amember of the Knights ofColumbus, American Legionand Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Surviving are his wife, RitaFritsch of Brazil; two sons,Father Fritsch and DonaldFritsch of Brazil; a brother,James Fritsch of Batesville; twograndchildren and two great-grandchildren. �

Ascension of the LordA painting at St. Peter and Paul Church in Mauren, Liechtenstein,depicts Christ’s ascension. The solemnity of the Ascension ofthe Lord celebrates the completion of Christ’s mission on earthand his entry into heaven. It is observed on May 29 this year(June 1 in some dioceses), and is a holy day of obligation.
