Changing Times October 2017

Dear Members,

I want to thank you all for giving our wonderful leader, Larry

Harfmann a wonderful send off. As you know Larry worked for

the agency for over 16 years and he gave his heart and soul to

the center he loved. While we are searching for the new manager,

I will be stationed at the center. I look forward to meeting the

members and getting your feedback on ways to make

improvements to this fabulous center.

We have some exciting events coming this October, so please

make sure to read the entire newsletter, so you do not miss out.

Some of the events include our Flu shots, Greenmarket

presentations, Senior Appreciation day, our new Zumba class and

Senior Ensemble Theater workshop, a spooky Halloween

costume party and a volunteer meeting to name a few…

As we start the new season of Fall I ask all our members to reach

out to their fellow members. If you see someone sitting alone,

please say hello and introduce yourself or even ask them to join

your table. I am sure you can remember your first day coming to

the center which can feel like the first day at school if you do not

know anyone, so I encourage everyone to make a new friend!

I also ask for our members to alert me or my office staff if you

find the restrooms in need of attention. As you can imagine we

have three floors to maintain, so we could use your help to keep

the center in pristine condition.

With much love and respect, Debbie Hoffer

OCTOBER FUN FACTS October comes from the Latin word octo which means eight. In

ancient Rome, October was the eighth month of the year. When the

Gregorian calendar was adopted, it became the tenth month of the

year but it has retained it's original name.

The birthstones for October are opal and tourmaline. Opals are con-

sidered to be the traditional birthstone and they symbolize hope.

Tourmaline is the modern birthstone for October. Both gemstones

come in a wide variety of colors and are known for displaying multi-

ple colors within the same stone.

Greenmarket Presentation and Tour of Corona Market

On October 19th at 11:00a.m. GrowNYC is sponsoring a presentation for all interested mem-bers at the center to review the benefits of the Greenmarket (farmers market). The presentation will also include a discussion about seasonal eating and how to use your EBT card (Food stamps) at these markets. On October 20th, GrowNYC will also be taking a group of up to 8 people to the Corona Greenmar-ket (104 St & Roosevelt Ave). At the market, every-one on the tour will receive a food sample from that day's market. Everyone who attend this tour will receive $6 in Health Bucks vouchers which they can use to buy fruits and vegetables. To take the tour you must register in advance with Jorge.

Catherine Sheridan Senior Center October Newsletter

Older adults need to get shots (vaccines) to prevent serious diseases. Protect your health by getting all your shots on schedule, especially if you are age 60 or older.

If you are age 65 or older: Get shots to prevent pneumococcal disease. Pneumococcal disease can include pneumonia, meningitis, and blood in-fections. It’s also important for all adults to get the seasonal flu vaccine. It is the best way to protect yourself and others from the flu.

Get the Tdap shot to protect against tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough (pertussis). Everyone needs to get the Tdap shot once. Get a shot to prevent shingles. Shingles causes a rash and can lead to pain that lasts for months. Even if you have always gotten your shots on schedule, you still need to get some shots as an older adult. This is because older adults are more at risk to get certain diseases and serious complications from infections. Also the protection from some shots can wear off over time.

Keep a copy of your vaccination record.

Ask your doctor to print out a record of all the shots you've had. Keep this record in a safe place.
