Mr. Bell,
I saw your story on the BYU English Learning Center, and I love how you focused on
the uniqueness of the center and how it puts BYU in such a positive light.
I have a great story idea for BYU Weekly that ties directly to BYU. The BYU A.R.T.S.
Partnership is holding its sixth Arts Express conference for elementary school
teachers across the valley. The BYU A.R.T.S. Partnership involves multiple colleges
on campus who work together to impact communities through improving
elementary education. Elementary teachers throughout Utah come to the
conference to receive hands-on training to incorporate the fine arts into theircurriculum. Instructors and administrators of the training are BYU Faculty
members, and BYU education students are encouraged to attend. You would be able
to go to the event and interview the presenters and attendees about their
experience.

McKay,
Jim Bell recommended us to cover this conference and it would be great for our
show. I decided I would cover it but would like to get more information on it. It's
the 13th and 14th, correct? And you mentioned that we would be able to film and
interview those involved? Do we need to register for the event or will there be
special accommodations that we may be able to cover the conference?
Thank you,

Julianne,
I am glad to hear you will be covering this conference. The link below is to the
conference schedule. You will be able to attend the event without registering, and
you will not need any sort of media pass. The participants have been informed thatthey will be on camera and that their attendance implies consent. I will be there
with another person from our office getting information for an article. We will be
going to the conference Wednesday for most of the day and then Thursday
afternoon.

The BYU A.R.T.S. Partnership under the McKay school holds this conference in order
to show teachers how valuable art is in education and how art can improve
performance in other areas such as math and reading. The keynote speaker Claudia
Cornett is a reading specialist, but she will be speaking on how important art is in
improving students' reading skills. She will speak on Wednesday and would most
likely be available for an interview after her address.
During the conference you will be able to film the participants in their break out
sessions, which will be dance, art and music classes. You will be able to get footage
of teachers dancing, singing and painting. There will also be on-site artists you could
film at the conference. These artists will be working on different projects
throughout the conference in order to give the teachers who attend an idea of the
creative process. Thursday afternoon for the last part of the conference, there will
be an "informance" where all of the participants perform and share what they
learned in their classes.
There will definitely be many opportunities for exciting footage and interviews. I'mglad you will be covering this conference, and I think it will really put BYU in a good
light.
Let me know if you have any more questions or need more information.
Thank you,
Amy Merrill
