The Girl is SavageBOOK BY Katherine Rundell

REVIEW BY Hebe 7CHA

Katherine Rundell is a fantastic author and has written lots of other books:  'The Explorer',  'The Wolf Wilder' and 'Rooftoppers'. Wilhelmina’s world is beautiful! Living half wild half child in the African bush! With herhorse, best friend and monkey every day is golden. But then the farm she lives on is soldand she is sent away to a boarding school in England- for lions and hyenas are nothing toa pack of school girls. I would recommend this book to anyone as it is such an enjoyableread and super adventurous (just like all Katherine Rundell’s other books)! My favouritepart of this book was the part when Wilhelmina gets sent to boarding school. She finds itso difficult and then decides to do something about it! I like this part best because shebecomes very determined to come back home! This is a very adventurous story with lotsof thrilling twists! I really liked how the author made the story flow and build up as it goesalong. For me, as I was reading I really felt like it was actually happening- just what a bookshould be like. I would definitely rate this book 10/10. If you enjoy this book I wouldrecommending checking out all Katherine Rundell’s other books!

Stephen  King

Famous for novels such as : Carrie , It and The shining Stephan King struggled with depression andbefore getting treatment,  he would usesubstance abuse as a  way to self medicate. Hehas also said that he used writing as a way tokeep his dark thoughts at bay,.

J.K Rowling

"I believe  we’re almost robotically trained to respond with I’M FINE and arictus grin when anyone asks how we are. We celebrate our history, ouricons and party at pride marches every year at this time. So much so, it’salmost become anathema to admit we’re still struggling in any way shape orform. But struggle we do.”

Juno Dawson

“I have never been remotely ashamed of havingbeen depressed. Never. What’s to be ashamedof? I went through a really rough time and I amquite proud that I got out of that.”

Rowling struggled with depression whilst writingthe famous Harry Potter series as a single mumliving on benefits.

AUTHORS

WITH autism

Dealing with autism:

This is basically my experience with autism and how I copewith it. Having an Autistic Spectrum Condition isn’ttechnically a mental health issue but it definitely impactson my mental health. This isn’t people in general, just myweird little triggers and quirks and stuff. 1. I do not like crowds. Or lines of people. Or contact frompeople I don’t know. Or people touching me in the back ingeneral. I cope by staying away from crowds when I can,and I usually have to sit in between friends/family on thebus, in cinemas, etc. School does not help that at all. 2. I am incredibly physically sensitive. I feel pain more thanmost people, and that’s one of the reasons why I hatecrowds. I cope by mostly staying away from things that willprobably hurt, e.g. anything hot 3. I tend to daydream when something isn’t interesting andget distracted easily. I usually cope by trying to do thingsthat actually interest me 4. If I don’t want to do something or I find somethingillogical, I most likely won’t unless I need to. I usually copeby telling myself that I NEED to do this. 5. I have a good imagination but can’t put my ideas intoreality, or I don’t know how to. If I could, the internet wouldbe flooded with stuff created by me. 6. I have a selective memory. For example, I can rememberevery element on the Periodic Table but I can barelyremember what day it is. 7. I’m emotionally sensitive, so if I think that someone ittrying to upset me, I usually act aggressively, and I can’tunderstand the concept of banter. At all.

Can you recommend a book thatlifts your spirits ?

In what ways does writing makeyou feel more positive ?

I know that a lot of young people arereading my books and hopefully sharingthe messages I'm trying to convey aboutacceptance and inclusion.

How do you think 'Mind youhead' has helped your readers ? What was your favourite book as

child ?

I liked a book called Vampires. It was allabout a family of vampires who lived inBradford which I thought was prettyfunny because I'm from Bradford too!

I think Caitlin Moran's How to be aWoman made me feel a lot better aboutthe world. It made me angry and proudto call myself a feminist.

I hope it's helped people to realise thatwhat they're experiencing with theirmental health is totally normal and theyaren't alone or isolated

Mind Your HeadBOOK BY Juno Dawson                        Fearne 7 CHA

REVIEW BY

Synopsis: From the critically acclaimed author of THIS BOOK IS GAY, James Dawson, now writing as Juno Dawson. We

all have a mind, so we all need to take care of our mental health as much as we need to take care of ourphysical health. And the first step is being able to talk about our mental health. Juno Dawson leads the way

with this frank, factual and funny book, with added information and support from clinical psychologist DrOlivia Hewitt. Covering topics from anxiety and depression to addiction, self-harm and personality disorders,

Juno and Olivia talk clearly and supportively about a range of issues facing young people's mental health -whether fleeting or long-term - and how to manage them. With real-life stories from young people around the

world and witty illustrations from Gemma Correll.

The book ‘Mind your Head’ is a great non-fiction book about mental health written by Juno Dawson. It waswritten to help people and explains that if you have mental health issues, it is no different to physical health

issues. It covers topics such as anxiety, depression, self-harm, personality disorders etc. The book evenincludes true stories from people’s experiences with mental health. I think this is a great book to read if you

want to understand mental health more, and especially since it was National World Mental Health Dayrecently.

I rate this book 4.5 stars out of 5. I hope you will enjoy it too. .

REVIEW BY

Once is a book set in ww2  (Nazi invaded) Poland. A child called Felix is sent to anorphanage and decides he needs to escape in order to resolve his ambition infinding his parents. However, on the way, he finds a burning house , where he meets a six year old girlwith the name Zelda . Together they discover a city and embark on many life threating challenges. I really liked this book because adventurous the authors makes the plot consideringit's such a quick read and was really intrigued by understanding that period in timefrom a child's perspective. 8/10
