History of Computers

Early Computational DevicesSome of the early Computational devices includedAbacus- First calculating and counting toolPunched Cards- Cards used by early computers that held digital information

Early computersENIAC- First general purpose computerEDSAC- Early British computer that was constructed by Marice Williams EDVAC-Stored Program Computer that was one of the earliest electronic computersUNIVAC- First commercial computer product in the U.S.Generations and main components1ST Generation (1940-1956)- Vacuum tube-these were often enormous, taking up entire rooms. Input was based on punched cards and paper tape. Output was from printers.2nd Generation (1956-1963)- Transistors- These were invented in 1947, but didnt become widespread until 1950s. These were smaller, faster, and more energy efficient then first generation.InternetThe birth of the net was in the 1960sMosaic was the first internet browserDepartment of defense created ARPANETARPANET was the worlds first operational packet switching networkEarly computer

Generation cont.3rd Generation- Integrated Circuits- Transistors were miniaturized and put on a chip. This drastically increased the speed. 4th Generation (1971-Now)-Microprocessors- Thousands of integrated circuits are put on one chip in microprocessors.5th Generation (Now and Beyond)- Artificial Intelligence- This is still in development. The goal is to develop devices that respond to natural language input.Inventors/developersSteve Jobs- Co founder of AppleSteven Wozniak- Co founder of Apple Bill Gates- Chairman of MicrosoftTim Berners Lee- Invented World Wide Web
