What a great meeting we had August 15th! Bob, Jenny and James Scaffidi arrived in spite of the heat and were very gracious and very, very nice! They shared pictures and stories with everyone. I want to thank all who came to the meeting (we had every chair taken!) to welcome them. The NTOC presented them with a “buckle” plaque, Texas cookbook, Olds car kit, all in a bag with our logo and bluebonnets! The next few months are going to be very busy. In addition to planning for our Zone Show, October 22-24, there is the State Fair day on October 9th. If you have not advised Aron of your desire to attend, you need to let him know ASAP so that he can get the packet to you which will allow your car and occupants to enter the fair grounds. If you were at the August meeting, he has your name. Remember that you have to arrive before 9:00 am and not leave until 6:00 pm. We will hold our October meeting there. More on the Fair Day in the Rocket. Next on the agenda is the Bastrop cruise! If you have not made this event, you are missing a lot of fun! Most of us will leave Friday morning, 11/13/10, at a rest stop near Waxahachie, stop for lunch and arrive at our motel mid-afternoon. There is a registration form on the website and the number for the motel further on in the Rocket. Hope everyone had a relaxing or exciting Labor Day holiday! The September 12th meeting will be held at the Marriott Hotel where we will be hosting our Zone Show. It will the time to step up to the plate, if you have not done so already, and take an active roll. Although it requires time, the rewards are great! Future meetings are: October 9th at the State Fair during our show time; November 15th may be changed due to the fact that a lot of us will be in Bastrop; and December 12th will be our Christmas Party. Meeting Minutesby Gene Crowdis

August 2010 Monthly Meeting Minutes

The August NTOC monthly meeting was held Sunday, August 15 at J. Gilligan’s in Arlington. President Juju Nance called the meeting to order at 2:01 pm and welcomed everyone. There were 34 members and 4 visitors present. Three of the visitors were Bob, Jenny, and James Scaffidi from Australia. Bob has been communicating with Chris and Gene by email to schedule an opportunity to meet with the NTOC during their visit from Australia. The members of NTOC had prepared a Texas “gift bag” for the Scaffidis. They were presented with NTOC shirts, Texas items and a Texas Cookbook from Betty Bonner. In return the NTOC club was presented with caps with the Oldsmobile script and “Australia” for the Zone Show raffle.

Members attending who we haven’t seen in a while were Tony and Mary Jo Kraut, John Liconte (WELCOME HOME JOHN!), Neil Gathings, and James Crawford, who we are glad to have back in Texas. Congratulations to you and your wife on the birth of your new baby.

2010 Zone Show Racing Team ReportNeil Gathings and Lance Hall reported on the Bracket Racing program they are working on for the 2010 Zone show. Everything is set for the Saturday night Olds Club Drag Race at North Star Dragway just north of Denton, Texas. Lance and Neil are preparing some information and instructions for the people who want to race that night. There will be an area where all Oldsmobiles will be staged and after a “parade lap’ the members who want to race will begin to set up their “dial-in’ times for later heads-up competition. As with last year this should be a lot of fun, excitement and even some bragging for the next year of meetings. Watch for more information on this in future Rockets. Chris Dreiling displayed the exceptional trophies he designed and fabricated for the winners.

Treasurer’s ReportJuju called on Cindy for the Treasurer’s report. Cindy reported that the NTOC remains financially sound. We are still receiving some membership renewals, so if you missed the cut-off for the roster information you can still send in your dues and maintain your continuous membership.

We need to remind all NTOC members that membership in OCA is required to maintain your NTOC membership. NTOC is eligible for the OCA event insurance only if we maintain an approved level of OCA membership for our Chapter.

If you are not receiving the Journey with Olds magazine every month you are not a member of OCA. Please renew your membership in the National organization so that NTOC can continue to be covered by the OCA liability insurance policy for our club functions and events, like the October Zone Show.

If you don’t know your OCA expiration date contact Gene Crowdis, [email protected] and he can look it up for you.

2010 NTOC State Fair DayTime to sign up for a reserved spot at the State Fair of Texas Car Corral. We will have the same area as last year with lots of shade so bring your chairs, some breakfast items to share and plan to have a great time. The North Texas Olds Club is scheduled for Saturday October 9. Arrive before 9:00 am and stay until 6:00 pm. As usual we will have space for 25 cars and all of the people you can get into your car. If you trailer your car there will be parking arrangements for your tow vehicle and trailer in a nearby lot at no charge. If you are new to NTOC or maybe you haven’t taken the opportunity to spend a day at the fair with NTOC this will be a great year to start. I am sure that the regulars will make it, but there is always room for members who haven’t had the opportunity to join in with us before.

This is for all members of NTOC. You don’t have to have a “Show Car” to join in this display, but we do appreciate it if you wash it. The purpose is to display our cars, introduce the North Texas Olds Club to as many people as we can and encourage Oldsmobile people who stop by to join NTOC and OCA. We will have extra copies of the JWO to show people who are interested in our organization.

Make your plans NOW!!!

The Zone Show Registration Form in this issue of the Rocket and on the NTOC website.

By the way it really helps Lawrence and Lois if you get your Zone Show registration in early.

The list of registrations from 2009 was given to Lois who will try to contact the attendees by email and invite them again this year.

The T-Shirt artwork designed by Pete Kley was displayed. Everyone thought it was very good and Pete was thanked for his efforts. Discussion was held regarding the basic color for the t-shirt and Lois said she would try to place the artwork on different colors and talk to her t-shirt printer to get their suggestions. A vote will be taken in September to select the color.

The trophies and awards were discussed and first and second place awards will be given in each of 16 classes. Special trophies will also be given. Awards will be presented on Sunday morning.

Insurance has been approved so now we are ready to get moving to make this event another Great NTOC sponsored Oldsmobile Show. John LaMonica is gathering items for the raffle. John says that there are several very nice prizes available for the raffle. There just might be another weekend at the DFW Marriott and Golf Club.

NOTICE GOLFERS – If you are interested in playing a round of Golf at the Marriott contact John Bock so he can try to put a group together. The Hotel has offered to work with NTOC to arrange for our members to play.

See the NTOC website for information about the Saturday night Bracket racing at the North Star Dragway on Highway 35 in Denton. (Just north of Denton actually.) (http://clubs.hemmings.com/ntexasoca) There is a lot of excitement building for the drag races as is mentioned earlier in this Rocket.

Other EventsThere will be a Buick-Olds-Pontiac-Cadillac casual get-together on October 30 in Sunnyvale. $5.00 entry gets “hot lunch & a drink” Contact Info: [email protected] - 972-203-0767 (day of show only) - [email protected] - 972-239-5014 - Event coordinator: Glen Roy Balko - [email protected]

There was a discussion about a visit to Mitchell Rasansky’s private car collection. It was recommended that we do that after first of the year.

Bastrop Veteran’s car Show in NovemberA reminder was made about the Bastrop car show. Several members indicated they were going to attend. The phone number for the new hotel of choice was provided. Most will go down on Friday and return on Sunday. Always room for more!!

2010 OCA Nationals ReportNTOC Oldsmobiles were represented by two Trofeos owned by Dave and Donna Huggins and the newly christened “CC Rider” custom cruiser of Aron and Juju Nance. Both of the Trofeos were awarded Best of Class in their respective classes and the Custom Cruiser was awarded a First Place in its class. Way to go folks. These cars were driven through or washed by the rain every day on the way from Texas to Massachusetts. You’ve done us proud!!

A request was made for a report on the Board of Directors Meeting. Some members of NTOC, non-board members, as well as five members of NTOC who are or were on the Board attended the meeting. Reported from the meeting activities are listed below:

Pat Yancey opened the meeting at 8:00 am and held the Old Business portion of the meeting.

Reports from all standing committees were presented and approved by the Board.

Vice-president Ed Konsmo reported on the compliance of the chapters to OCA requirements. Twenty-two of the 49 chapters have 100% OCA membership of their local members.

A new OCA Chapter, The West Texas Oldsmobile Club, was presented for approval and was approved unanimously. (Congratulations to all of the OCA members who signed up to get this chapter going. Special thanks to Rick Winn, John Wolfe, Steve Sechrist, Mike Mouzon, Craig Simpson and others for spearheading the effort in Lubbock.)

Treasurer, Gene Crowdis, presented the 2009 Financial Compilation Report and discussed various changes in the results from the previous year. The report was unanimously approved without any changes.

Discussion was held regarding the recent election and the question was brought up about the discussion held during the NTOC meeting where the fraudulent ballots were presented. There were questions about why these were made known to the NTOC membership rather than being kept to the OCA Board Members. No reason was given as to why the information should be kept from the membership when the Board Member was challenged to support his objection.

Meeting Minutes (continued)

Other matters discussed during the Old Business portion of the BOD Meeting involving requests for information, open communication, and BOD protocol were covered.

Resignations of Bob Casey, Chief Judge, Betty Vander Tuin, Swap Meet Chairperson, and Gerard Mavridis, Merchandise manager were announced.

A Motion was made by President Pat Yancey, seconded and approved to change the OCA Policy to improve the method of distributing the “Official Ballots” for OCA elections. The ballots will now be printed on the back side of the dust cover opposite the mailing label so the ballot will have the member’s name, OCA number and expiration date.

The New Business portion was held by the new president and officers.

The proposed budget for business year 2010 – 2011 was presented by the Treasurer. The proposed budget was approved with only one Board Member voting no.

Chapters hosting the 2011 OCA Nationals in Reno and 2012 OCA Nationals in Des Moines gave updates on the status of their events. No Chapter has requested approval for the 2013 OCA Nationals.

Two names were presented to the board to fill the position of OCA Chief Judge. James Kryta and Ed Konsmo. After significant discussion Ed Konsmo was approved by the Board Members as the new Chief Judge.

Everett Horton was unanimously approved by the Board to fill the position of Swap Meet Chairman.

The Communication Coordinator and Membership Manager contracts were renewed by unanimous vote.

A new Data Management Committee to update the OCA website was announced by the president. On the committee are Karl Sup, Lois Liconte, and Brad Nicholson.

After considerable controversial discussion and the JWO Editor’s Contract was renewed.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:15 pm on Thursday July 22, 2010.

Secretary’ NoteAll portions of the 2010 OCA Board of Directors meeting were open to the General Membership. Nothing stated during the August 2010 North Texas Oldsmobile Club meeting was specified as “private to the Board of Directors meeting” or restricted from discussion with the OCA Members.

Tech TalkLance Hall told of a 1969 W-30 that had an electrical fire and was completely destroyed in 3 minutes. He recommended that everyone upgrade their in-car fire extinguisher to one that is more effective than the ones we buy at the local Auto Parts Stores. Recommended the H3R.

Cars For Sale or WantedMort Wetterling is interested in selling his 1972 Cutlass Supreme 4 Door Hard Top

Jerry Fuller is offering his 1958 Red/White Oldsmobile 88 4 Door Hard Top for Sale. NTOC Members may remember this car as the ’58 olds that was once owned by Len Heining.

Andy and Kammy Fleck are looking for a Viking Blue 442 Convertible ready to drive.

September MeetingThe September meeting will be held at the Marriott Hotel and Golf Club across from the Texas Motor Speedway on Highway 114 on Sunday September 12. This is where the Zone Show will be held again this year. The meeting will be in the restaurant area beginning at 2:00. Come early for lunch and socializing. After the meeting if you can stick around there will be Goody Bags to stuff. Always a lot of fun and it doesn’t take long if everyone pitches in.

REMEMBER WHEN……………….Hi everyone. My name is Keith Sauls and I am new to your club. We recently moved up to Glen Rose from San Antonio where we were active in the South Texas Oldsmobile Club. We are still unpacking and settling in but hope to get more involved with the NTOC in the upcoming months. During my time in the STOC I wrote a few articles for their newsletter. I hope you don’t mind if I recycle a couple to share with you.

Do you remember when the “car bug” first afflicted you? I do……I was about 13 or 14 and lived on a farm in rural Alabama. Our small farm was about seven miles from the bustling me-tropolis of Hartford AL (population around 1800). Back then I didn’t appreciate the peaceful surroundings that abode provided; today I do and we still have the farm.

In my youth, I saw automobiles as a way to escape the solitude of the farm and catch up with the world I thought was passing me by. We had a 1954 Chevy BelAir that my Grandfather had purchased new that had become an “extra” vehicle. Many years had passed since the day he had first brought it home and it now smoked like a mosquito truck. Remember those pesticide fogs and how we used to ride our bikes behind them? Explains a lot doesn’t it! Back to the ’54 Chevy. Much of my early driving was done in that car. My first modification led to my love of cars – not just as a means of transportation, but for pure enjoyment.

A large windstorm had torn the aluminum awning and support posts off of my Grandmother’s home. Dad had me load it all on

the farm truck and haul it to the back of the pasture. Once done with that project I had a little time on my hands, a hacksaw close by and a brilliant idea. Yep, cut that exhaust pipe off about a foot in front of the muffler. Wow; what a beautiful sound to a 14 year old’s ears. I could not wait to get it out on the surrounding dirt roads and continue perfecting my power sliding techniques on the curves. Besides the standard challenges these dirt roads provided such as a lack of traction, cows, meeting large tractors head-on etc., I now had the pleasure of sharing my cockpit with blue smoke and exhaust fumes. It was a small price to pay for the beautiful (beautiful to me, not to my relatives, neighbors, and local livestock) sound that 235 cubic inch straight six made when I had it screaming!

When my fume induced headache subsided a few hours later I had another brainstorm. A visit to the back of the pasture produced a piece of that aluminum tubing about five feet long. TUBING + ELECTRIC FENCE WIRE + ONE MUFFLER CLAMP = NEW CUSTOM EXHAUST SYSTEM (by country boy standards). Noise without fumes, what a concept! Yes, I was a genius.

During a trip home a couple of years ago, I walked the farm and noticed the aluminum pipe still hanging under that old Chevy. Yeah, I’ve still got it even though it has resided under an oak tree since I blew the transmission about a year after the exhaust mod-ification. Would you believe that old car still makes me smile?

NtoC Zone show judging info: PLease reaDThis year’s zone show as with previous years will incorporate OCA style judging based on the 1000 point system. Cars will not be judged as stringent like a national event. This show is about having fun! Some rules still apply like a fire extinguisher, 3 items that promote the club OCA, or your local chapter (newsletters, OCA window stickers, License plate frames, ECT.) and 3 literature items pertaining to the car (sales brochures, owner’s manuals, ECT).

This is a modified format from the national event and only 1st & 2nd place plaques will be handed out. There are special awards given too. The racing event will consist of 4 plaques, Bracket winner, Bracket runner up, Top E.T. & Top M.P.H. To make the event a success we need volunteer judges to help Git’ er done! Please sign up and help.

MORE INFO ON ACTIVITIES IN NEXT MONTH’S ROCKET

NTOC will display their Oldsmobiles at the State Fair of Texas Car Corral on Saturday, October 9th, 2010. We will be displaying with the Z Club of Texas and the Dallas Mopar Club. We will be in Corral ‘A’ which is among trees (shade, in other words); the cars behind the fence (so the curious cannot caress our Oldsmobile’s) and all participants are invited to bring something for breakfast for all. We must be in the corral by 9 AM, and remain until 6 PM. You can stuff as many bodies in your Olds that it will hold, and you all get onto the Fair Grounds FREE, as in NO CHARGE! You can enjoy the Fair with Primo Parking; someone from the Club will always be in the Corral to watch over our cars. I will have a sign up list at the next NTOC meeting. You can also contact me via email: [email protected] or phone (214-327-6699) to insure your spot. WE ARE LIMITED TO 25 SLOTS. There will be space for your tow vehicle/trailer, if needed, away from the Corral. Once you are signed up, and as soon as Kelly Pound provides them, I will send via snail your “package” with all instructions and documentation for entry to the Fair Grounds. Please sign up ASAP, to ease my burden! Thanks! Aron C. Nance
