What do Nuclear Engineers Do? Nuclear Engineers develop and work

with the technology that allows us to harness electrical power from nuclear reactions.•They design Power plants

and equipment that transforms nuclear reactions into electricity.

•Many work in power plants, monitoring equipment and overseeing maintenance and repairs.

•Others work with nuclear fuels, ensuring they are produced, used, and disposed of safely.

•Some work in health care, designing diagnostic equipment such as x-ray machines.

How is Math Applied?

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD): They use algorithms and numerical methods to solve problems that involve fluid flows.

Radioactive Decay: The spontaneous breakdown of an atomic nucleus (Half Lives, etc.). We’ve solved these in Biology, Chemistry, and Algebra (Y = A x ½^RxT)

How is Science Applied?

They design power plants that create energy to power homes and businesses without producing greenhouse gases.

They harness the power of atoms to help solve large and difficult problems concerning humanity.

How is Technology Applied? They develop machines that scan the

human body and destroy cancer cells, sterilize food and medical equipment, and create new pest or drought-resistant seeds.

Nuclear engineers are heavily involved in designing equipment and devices used to generate nuclear power.

Why Did we Choose this Career? It was an interesting and unique job.

We didn’t want to take a generic job that most likely half the class would do. Nuclear engineers also make a large difference in the world.

Additional Skills Necessary To be a successful Nuclear Engineer

you must love challenges, since they are faced with many problems that don’t have an answer up front. So you’d have to be a great, patient, problem-solver.
