“Sometimes we lived on Loomis on the third floor before Keeler. Before Keeler it was Paulina, and before that, I can’t remember.”
“We didn’t always live on Mango Street…”
“But what I remember most was moving a lot.”
“…we don’t have to pay rent… or make too much noise…”
The house on Mango Street is ours…”
“Bricks are crumbling in places, and the front door is so swollen you have to push hard to get in.”
“But the house on Mango Street isn’t what the way they told us at all.”
“…Mama and Papa, Carlos and Kiki, me and Nenny.”
“Everyone has to share a bedroom…”
“Each time it’d seemed there’d be one more of us.”
“When we lived on Loomis… the Laundromat down had been robbed.”
“The way she said it made me feel like nothing. I lived there.”
“You live there?”
“I knew then I had to have a house. A real house. One I could point to.”
“Temporary, papa says. But I know how things go…”
