MAY MAY bw by Correspondents Daesha Cuttrell and Cathy Spain LEAGUE CITY -- In a few weeks, groups from all over Texas and Oklahoma will gather at Camp Bandina in the Texas hill country for some friendly competition, grounding in the Word and Christian encouragement. Students from third grade to adults (some over the age of 70!) have been diligently studying 1 Samuel for Texas Bible Bowl on the weekend of April 6-8. Dian Sandefur, a fourth year participant from the League City church of Christ, points out some benefits: “Bible Bowl is a great time for our family as we study the same text and challenge each other. We learn more about God’s word while having fun. The event itself is a very uplifting experience to have Christians from all around the area coming together singing and praising God and meeting new friends.” Lubbock Christian University will be on hand to award three $1,000 scholarships to the top scorers. TBB also has a number of scholarships to hand out to high school seniors who have participated in Bible Bowl and are faithful members of their congregations. The San Antonio group led by Cathy Spain studies in homes, at the Northwest church of Christ building and at the Bigz Burger Joint meeting place of the West Bexar County congregation. Along with others across the state, these thirteen students and eight adult Bexar Bible Bowlers have been learning about the end of the judges’ leadership and the beginning of the kings of Israel. The Book of 1 Samuel showcases God’s faithfulness and provision for His people. Psalm 119:105 is TBB’s overarching theme - “Thy Word is a lamp to my feet and a light unto my path.” It guides the board in planning each Bible Bowl competition. For this year’s book, the guiding verse is 1 Samuel 12:24: “Only fear the Lord and serve Him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things He has done for you.” At TBB, the devotionals and praise times will be spent considering the Lord and what He has done. Through the weekend, our faith will be deepened as we consider the Lord, His great works on our behalf and how we can serve Him faithfully. The online materials help all contestants as the study writes 1 Samuel on their hearts. Teams may download both highlighted and plain texts of the book, as well as study guides and practice tests for all chapters. Lisa Kirkwood and the group from McDermott Road church of Christ in Plano have been instrumental in providing and updating these materials. Paul Hendrickson of the Sidney community has served as president of Texas Bible Bowl for most of five years. The priority of teaching the next generation about God and His Word is evident in his commitment to TBB. He and the other board members are thankful for the opportunity to continue to reach children, teens and adults with the word of God. For more information, see the website at TexasBibleBowl.org. 34 YEARS SERVING SAN ANTONIO AND SOUTH TEXAS!

SAN ANTONIO – Saying, “There’s no one answer,” a youth attending a recent leadership workshop revealed one of the biggest reasons to study with others who minister to the church.

About 35 men from eight or so congregations gathered at Bandina Christian Youth Camp to pray, study and fellowship together for the good of the church. Organized by Minister Mark Hammitt and the elders of the Weber Road church in Corpus Christi, the annual Men’s Leadership Workshop was on Jan. 26-27.

According to Hammitt, the objectives are to encourage all who attend to continue serving God and the church, to strengthen men currently serving as elders and in other leadership positions such as deacons and evangelists, and to prepare and equip others to serve in those roles in the future.

Mark Hanstein, academic dean of the Southeast Institute of Biblical Studies in Knoxvillee, Tenn., served as the resource speaker. He has preached for churches in California, Colorado and Texas for 42 years. He has taught at the Bear Valley Bible Institute in Denver and was one of the deans. While living there, he served as an elder for the Bear Valley congregation.

When asked what others might appreciate about the sessions, another leader said, “The workshop scenarios were my favorite part. Scenarios are workshop assignments where teams of at least five work together to analyze hypothetical but realistic church issues, utilize sound scriptural guidance to solve the issues and present the solutions to the overall group of participants.”

SAN ANTONIO -- Duane Dunlap, a youth leader for the Dellcrest church of Christ here, will be taking the young people to a Youth Xtravaganza Weekend in Dallas. The Central Pointe Church of Christ sponsors the “Armed & Dangerous” gathering from March 9-11 this year.

Minister Dwayne Case of the Northeast church of Christ in Oklahoma City will be the guest speaker. He holds Master of Arts degrees from Oklahoma Christian University in family life ministry and business administration/leadership management.

Why did Jesus frequently present opposing ideas like these: “You have heard that it was said, an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth, but I say to you…if someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other” (Matt. 5:38-39), and, “You have heard that it was said, love your neighbor and hate your enemy, but I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matt. 5:43-44)?

Jesus does this quite often. Was He a rebel, trying to change what people usually accept as normal? Trying to stir things up?

His apostles were brought up short by this one: “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all” (Mark 9: 35). It is understandable to respond, “This makes no sense!”

Nicodemus was incredulous when Jesus told him: “Unless one is born again, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). And the crowds laughed at Jesus for saying: “Why do you weep? The child is not dead but sleeping” (Mark 5:39).

I believe that the goal of Jesus’ teaching was to demonstrate the proper perspective on life and on this world. Jesus alone has been in Heaven as a

spiritual being, and has been on earth as a physical being. He alone sees simultaneously from God’s perspective and man’s view (Philippians 2).

Remember the saying that there are two sides to every story? There are two perspectives to your life story: man’s flawed view and God’s perspective, which is, in fact, reality: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord” (Isa. 55:8).

Jesus’ teachings are meant to help His followers live life through God’s perspective. When Jesus healed the blind man in John 9, everyone’s perspective was that the man was born blind due to his sin. Jesus taught them God’s perspective: “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be made manifest in him” (Verse 3). Continued on page 5

Among the four Gospels, Luke is the favorite of many. Perhaps one reason is that Luke, having been an educated Gentile physician, is easier for modern readers to identify with than the other three Gospel authors, especially Matthew, who reflected a more traditional Jewish perspective. One of Luke’s themes having special relevance in the 21st century is his emphasis on money and

wealth.Luke sometimes used money and wealth in a

positive—or at least neutral—sense. One positive example is the “Good” Samaritan giving money to the innkeeper to take care of the bruised and beaten Jew. Another parable, concerning the lost silver coin that a woman finds, provides a positive application to the kingdom. Even Jesus’ shrewd reply to the spies sent from the chief priests and teachers of the law to question him about paying taxes to Caesar portrays money neutrally: “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s” (20:25 NIV).

On the other hand, Luke’s Gospel contains some stern warnings about the dangers of money and

wealth in general. As early as Chapter 9 Jesus asked his disciples, “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet lose or forfeit his very self?” (9:25). I remember sharing this passage with my own daughter before she went off to law school.

Similarly, Jesus used a parable of a “certain rich man” whose agricultural wealth increased so much that he tore down his barns and built bigger ones, assuring himself that many years of pleasure and ease would follow. Yet he was condemned by God to an early demise because he stored up wealth for himself but wasn’t rich toward God (12:20-21). He could almost be the rich man in the parable who ended up in misery because of his love of wealth and his mistreatment of Lazarus (16:19-31).

One of the most interesting treatments of the money-wealth theme in Luke’s Gospel is the contrast between the rich young man and Zacchaeus in Chapters 18 and 19. When the wealthy young “ruler” of Chapter 18 asked how to attain eternal life, Jesus replied that he would need to sell his possessions and give to the poor in order to become Jesus’ disciple and gain treasure in heaven. Giving up his wealth was simply unacceptable to the young man.

In complete contrast, the tax-collecting, rich Zacchaeus of Chapter 19, once he met Jesus and heard his message, vowed to donate half his possessions to the poor and pay back four times

what he owed to those he might have cheated. Jesus’ metaphoric comparison of a camel passing through the eye of a needle to a rich person entering the kingdom of God certainly applies to the young ruler but surprisingly not to penitent Zacchaeus.

Appropriately, Luke’s final anecdote concerning money and wealth ends on a very positive note, contrasted to a very negative one. In Chapter 21, Jesus observed a poor widow who gave all the money she possessed to the temple treasury, and He publicly commended her for giving all she had to live on. In the very next chapter Judas conversely (and perversely) betrayed his Master to the chief priests and their cronies for 30 silver coins.

In the final analysis, the bottom line concerning wealth is driven home in Jesus’ conclusion to the parable of the shrewd steward: “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money” (16:13).

Christians need to Rediscover the Holy Spirit and deepen their relationship with God

Many believers over the past centuries have grappled with who is the Holy Spirit and what He did in order to form an opinion about what He will do next. Since He is part of the Godhead, this has been fraught with uninformed and wild theories about each of these questions. While each person is entitled to their own theories, the most informed conclusion requires prayer and a close examination of the information within the scriptures.People usually search for more information about someone in whom they are curious. Whether a potential spouse or another person whom they admire or would like to emulate, people attempt to learn more about others they esteem. Christians need to maintain this attitude toward the Holy Spirit. He lives within us and we need to learn as much as possible about Him, His desires, His actions. We need to understand how to set aside the inaccurate information spread about Him. We must Rediscover His true power in order to accomplish Jesus’ goals. As we explore the information His light reveals, we will deepen our relationship with God and become better warriors for His Conquest to offer Jesus’ gift to all people.

Continued from page 4Today, His Words are there for us when we

face life’s tragedies, when there are no words that we can say to bring comfort. As we try to reason, make sense, or justify what has happened, we cannot see the whole story, but God does. Jesus’ teachings give us insight into God’s perspective, which is quite the opposite of man’s view.

Consider these two verses: “In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33), and “Blessed are you when men revile you and

persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account” (Matt. 5:11).

When life turns upside down, or when you are confused with the path that life is taking, or when you wonder if it has happened to you so “that the works of God might be made manifest,” sit in silence with God and try to see things from His perspective. Meditate on Jesus’ words, on the entire Word of God. And trust God when you can see no further: “For the wisdom of the world is foolishness with God” (I Cor. 3:19).

The answers are there with God.

SAN MARCOS – “We are excited about this year’s lineup and scheduled activities!” said Minister and Director of Focal Point, Wayne Jones. The registration page for the annual preacher’s workshop scheduled here at the University church of Christ for May 5-10 recently went live.

The purpose is stated thus: “Focal Point is a workshop aimed at encouraging and strengthening those who preach the gospel and others who have made the work of the church a priority in their lives. Classes are designed to be informative, inspirational and encouraging.

“Every effort has been made to ensure that

Focal Point provides biblical insight combined with practical application. Our focus is on Jesus and our aim is to strengthen His church.

“God has entrusted us with a great work, and our prayer is that Focal Point will be of service to those who are fulfilling that work.”

The sessions begin Saturday night at 6:30 with Cody Westbrook’s lesson, “On the Mountain: The Heart of a Disciple.” Congregational singing and dessert follow. The Sunday morning lessons begin at 9:30 and 10:30.

Area 7th-12th graders will join the University church’s young people for “Youth First Sunday” at noon. The students will enjoy fellowship

by Buck Griffith CORPUS CHRISTI – We rejoice to see

increasing responses to our outreach to veterans and the prison Bible distribution. We appreciate your help in getting the word out about New Life Behavior Ministries’ resources to everyone in your circle of influence and your joining us in serving others.

The VetNet program is taking many requests from across the nation for the NLBM curriculum. Military veterans outside of prison and those who serve them ask for our lessons. Most veterans are not incarcerated, but many of those who are inside are requesting materials, too. Many from all branches of

our military and their families are suffering. At no cost, we make the top five courses

available: Christian Marriage Skills, The Seeker Bible Study Series, Managing My Anger, Christians Against Substance Abuse, and the Attitudes and Behaviors lessons. In another direction, our big project today is raising funds to ship Bibles to prison chaplains to distribute freely among offenders. World Bible School has produced what we believe to be the best Bible for that mission.

The English Standard Version comes in a font that is readable in dimly-lit prisons. It contains a concordance and notes that spotlight the good news.

We want to purchase them in bulk. Volunteers will pick them up in Austin and bring them back to us to save the cost of shipping.

To help with either effort, mark “Bibles” and/or “VetNet” on the check and get it to us as soon as possible. Donations to support these and other prison ministry efforts may be sent to New Life Behavior Ministries, P.O. Box 270720, Corpus Christi, TX 78427-0720. Online donations may be made through PayPal. Click on the Donations tab at nlbm.org.

For more information, contact me by email at [email protected] or call 361-855-3372. Families are suffering.
