Thanks Doc…great advice! Some Take Home Tips on Wellness 1. Organics Be sure that all leftover food, paper napkins and towels, coffee grounds and filters are placed in the green organics bin in your kitchen. Remember to also recycle food waste from meetings, events, and team luncheons. 2. Paper Towels Did you know that the paper towels in your washrooms are also re- cyclable? Please do not place other garbage in the washroom bins so that paper towels can be recycled. Paper towels can also go into the green organics bin or blue recycling bins but not the black garbage. 3. Coffee cups, sleeves and lids. . . yes, they are accepted for recycling at YCC. Place your coffee cups, sleeves and lids into the blue bin after emptying any remaining liquids. To reduce the number of coffee cups generated use reusable mugs whenever possible. Busy Bees at YCC So why are bees so important to the health of the planet? Below we’ve listed just a few of the reasons that inspired us to become urban beekeepers and protectors of this essential and inspiring creature: l Urban beekeeping creates alternatives: local honey, garden pollination throughout the city, and overall perennial greening. l The world population of bees is in dramatic decline, with climate change, widespread use of pesticides, habitat loss and new diseases and parasites. l Cities, contrary to what we may believe, are truly the best place for bees: there are strict anti-pesticide laws, untapped floral diversity and largely unused rooftop space. l Bees play a major role in fruit, vegetable and nut production: about a third of what we eat relies on their pollination. l Urban beekeeping aligns with CF’s company-wide GREEN AT WORK ® environmental policies. A Few Tips for Even Greater Results: With the arrival of Fall, that means that extraction season is now upon us! Be on the lookout for an upcoming tasting session where you’ll have an opportunity to taste what our YCC bees have worked so hard to produce. Food Truck Happiness at YCC You asked for lunchtime variety and we listened! Since May 16, Yonge Corporate Centre has been hosting Food Truck Wednesdays every three weeks. And we’re happy to say…you’ve really stepped up to support the vendors. From classic burgers and tatter tots, to fish & chips, all the way to Mediterranean Mexican Fusion, we’ve strived to include something for everyone’s tastes. Good news! Due to overwhelming popularity, we will continue to have the trucks parked on the Ring Road surface lot throughout the fall! Watch for them from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. on: Wednesday October 10 Wednesday October 31 Wednesday November 14 As the weather begins to turn, we’ll look for alternatives to keep the vendors and our tenants comfortable – perhaps a concourse pop-up or two! Stay tuned. This past summer, we conducted a property-wide waste/ recycling audit to determine efficiencies, diversion rates and ways for us to improve our performance. The results are now in and overall, we’re doing well! Especially when you compare YCC to comparable GTA properties. Over 85% of the garbage we produce at YCC is being diverted from landfill. A terrific result by any measure! Let’s continue to look for ways to improve our performance as we set our sights on 90%. This summer, we established Urban Beekeeping Hives on the YCC grounds to do our part in the global effort to keep the world’s absolute best pollinators safe, healthy and busy. In partnership with Alvéole, a Canadian beekeeping company, we’ve been carefully tending to our hives throughout the summer months and we’re happy to say…the results have been amazing. We’ve come to see our bees as new CF employees, busy working all summer long for the hive. Here are a few unique stats about our bees: l Our hive is home to an estimated 13,000 – 15,000 bees. l Each bee will use our beautiful landscape and travel up to 5km per day to collect pollen. l Our hive is capable of producing up to 10kg of honey! l Each of our bees will make 1/8 tsp. of honey in their lifetime. l To produce just 1kg of honey, bees will cover 4x the circumference of the globe! l The hyper-local honey can help with seasonal allergies. l The colour of YCC honey will be based on the local flowers and will look and taste different from our sister hives at CF Toronto Eaton Centre. Recycling Facts: Our total recycling diverted from the landfill was equivalent to the weight of 138 Tesla Model S vehicles. We also recycled enough paper fibre to save 2,720 mature trees from being cut down last year and enough plastic bottles to produce 11,700 XL polyester T-Shirts. THANK YOU!

LESSWASTE

At Yonge Corporate Centre, everyone does an amazing job of recycling, but the best waste is simply… no waste. This October we’ll be celebrating Waste Reduction Week on Tuesday October 16th by showcasing ideas to cut down on packaging and other waste. We’ll also be focusing on electronic waste and batteries recycling.

Here are some easy tips to help you reduce or eliminate packaging waste:

l Take your own bags and containers for shopping. l Use reusable water bottles and coffee cups. l Choose products with less packaging.l Buy in bulk and avoid individually wrapped items.l Bring lunch from home in reusable containers.l Buy loose items at farmers’ markets or at the grocery store and

avoid overpackaged fruit and vegetables.l Use green dry cleaner bags to reduce dry cleaning plastic.

Mental Health

at Work

According to Civic Action, up to 50% of people living within the Greater Toronto area have experienced a mental health issue, either personally or with someone close. Mental health has become an issue that impacts the entire community, but due to the stigmas and under reporting that can surround this issue, the problem is likely bigger than the numbers indicate.

Mental health chal-lenges come in many forms, with some of the more common being anxi-ety and panic disorders, depression, eating disor-ders and substance abuse.

Cadillac Fairview will be committing resources and supporting initiatives in an effort to bring greater awareness to this impor-tant issue, helping each of us to better understand the challenges and op-portunities available in our support of family, friends and colleagues who live with mental health is-sues daily. Let’s all work together to remove the stigma and find help and hope for those affected.

CLOTHINGAlways wear clothing that is appropriate for colder temperatures. Here are a few clothing tips:

WIND PROTECTION

One of the best choices of attire is any garment that offers wind protection. Remember to seal all possible entry points for cold air by tucking in your base layer clothing.

WATERPROOFING

Often waterproof clothing is windproof as well. Waterproof clothing and footwear can really help when the weather gets messy. Having breathable gear will make your ride much better: adjustable jacket cuffs, back ventilation and armpit zippers/vents, etc.

YOUR SAFETYNo matter what… you must feel comfortable riding in inclement weather. Otherwise, stay home. And if you decide to ride in winter…always watch out for ice!

‘WET’ CHAIN OILGiven the relatively high volume of precipitation from fall through to spring, it’s smart to use a chain oil that is thicker and more viscous. And remember, chain oil needs to be applied more frequently in winter than during drier summer months.

TIRESWhile some are partial to studded tires, ultimately a wider tire with some tread is generally helpful in more inclement weather. Save the narrow and smooth slick tires for the dry asphalt in the summertime.

WINTER STORAGE TIPS

COVER YOUR BIKE

It’s always good to cover up your bike with a tarp or bike cover; even if it’s protected on a balcony or inside a garage.

OIL YOUR CHAIN

Make sure your chain is always properly oiled; a dry chain in the fall will likely mean a seized chain in the spring.

INFLATE YOUR TIRES

Inner tubes lose air. If your bike sits for months without adequate air, cracking will occur on the tire’s sidewall.
