    [New Britain, Conn., November 21, 2011] GovernorDannel P. Malloy and Federal Transit Administrator Peter M. Rogotoday announced the approval o a $275 million Full Funding GrantAgreement to the Connecticut Department o Transportation (DOT)

    or the construction o the New Britain-Hartord Busway beginningin the spring.

    The announcement at Central Connecticut State University in NewBritain provides unding under the ederal New Starts program or adedicated bus rapid transit roadway the frst o its kind in the state that will not only connect New Britain and Hartord with stops at11 stations along a 9.4 mile corridor, but will also bring improvedaccess and reduced commuting times or all commuters on I-84 westo Hartord.

    To compete regionally and globally, Connecticuts transportationsystem must be multi-modal, said Governor Malloy. This projectwill act as an economic multiplier or this region: interested developersand landowners have already invested time and money into revitalizingareas along this corridor and are eager to move orward. Because o theextensive planning that has already been done, the Busway is a projectthat is truly shovel ready.

    The Governor estimated that the project will create or sustain anestimated 4,000 construction jobs and 100 permanent jobs.

    DOT Commissioner James P. Redeker said the Busway should beup and running in 2014, providing some 16,000 passenger trips eachweekday and cutting bus travel time between New Britain and

    Hartord in hal.

    Total costs or the Busway are expected to be $567 million. In additionto the $275 million allocated by the FTAs New Starts program, theBusway will be unded by other ederal and state sources. Connecticutscontribution to the Busway will be $112 million.

    The New Britain - Hartord Busway will be a dedicated Bus RapidTransit (BRT) acility along a 9.4-mile corridor between downtownNew Britain and downtown Hartord.

    The Busway will be constructed in an abandoned railroad right-o-wayrom New Britain to just south o Newington Junction (a distance oapproximately 4.4 miles). From this point north, the busway corridor

    will be built in an easement alongside the active Amtrak railroadright-o-way or approximately 5.0 miles, ending at Asylum Streetand Spruce Street adjacent to Hartords Union Station.

    A total o up to 11 transit stations will serve the users o the busway.The Busway project and services will include major bus rapid transiteatures similar to conventional rail rapid transit to improve transittravel times and service quality including:

    Exclusive right-of-way improves travel time and reliability Trafcsignalpreferencegivesbusespreferencegettingthrough

    six at-grade intersections Level boarding from station platforms making boarding easier

    and quicker Off-board fare collection no umbling with change; boarding

    at all doors, not just the ront Less frequent stops improves travel time Stations shelters, benches, inormation displays and other

    amenities or passenger comort and saety Passenger information On-board and station signage and

    announcements to provide customers with updated inormationon next stops, next bus arrivals, etc.

    In addition, the Busway will also feature:

    Park & Ride connectionsOfferingfast,directCTTransitExpresssuburban commuter bus services rom Cheshire, Southington,WaterburyandpotentiallyotherpointssouthandwestofHartford

    Vehicle image All buses will be low-foor (except or suburbancommuter buses), clean-uel and hybrid buses with bike racks, andthe major Busway services will be run with branded vehicles toclearly identiy them as Busway buses.

    THE BUSWAY SERVICE

    Buses using this corridor will have more competitive travel timeswhen compared with automobiles since they will bypass congestionon arterial streets and I-84. The acility will permit bus access atintermediate points, so circulator bus routes can readily serve surroundinneighborhoods and then use the busway, thus providing a one-seat rThe service plan includes commuter express, shuttle, circulator, andconnecting eeder bus services. A multi-use trail will be constructedadjacent to or near the busway rom downtown New Britain to theNewington Junction Station in Newington.

    New bus routes designed to take advantage o the busway will oerresidents o the region greater access to downtown and suburbanemployment centers. The fexibility o busway operation will allowthe transit system to more eectively respond to changing ridershipdemand and uture development within the corridor.

    Bus services will operate during the same hours as the HartordDivision CTTransit services roughly 4:30 am to 1:30 am. During

    the peak service periods, buses will be operating every six minutes.During the o-peak hours, service will be less requent to meet thelower demand.

    CONTRACT 1

    Contract 1 (Project No. 088-177) includes construction of a portionof the Busway, beginning at Main Street (STA. 9+60) and runningnortherly to an end point just south of Stanley Street in New Britain,CT (STA. 36+25). Contract 1 also includes the construction of thedowntown New Britain station, the demolition of the existing railroad

    bridge over Route 9, a new busway bridge over Route 9, 5 retainingwalls, and reconstruction of the Route 72 eastbound Off-ramp andRoute 9 southbound On-ramp at Route 71 (Truman Overpass).

    CONTRACT 2

    Contract 2 (Project Nos. 088-178 and 093-166) includes constructionof a portion of the Busway, beginning just south of Stanley Street inNew Britain, CT (STA. 36+25) and running northerly to an endpoint just north of Cedar Street in Newington, CT (STA. 151+41).Contract 2 also includes the construction of two stations, two newbusway bridges, 16 retaining walls, and the replacement of the existingCedar Street (Route 175) bridge over the busway.

    CONTRACT 3Contract 3 (Project Nos. 93-180 and 63-643) includes constructionof a portion of the Busway, beginning just north of Cedar Street inNewington, CT (STA. 151+41) and running northerly to an endpoint just north of Sigourney Street in Hartford, CT (STA. 459+00).Contract 3 also includes the construction of 7 stations, 8 new buswaybridges, 44 retaining walls, 2 culverts to be jacked under existingoperating Amtrak tracks, a new bridge at Flatbush Avenue inWestHartfordviagradeseparation,andtheconstructionofanew gravel access road for Amtrak (AAR).

    CONTRACT 4

    Contract 4 (Project No. 063-670) includes construction of a portionof the Busway, beginning just north of Sigourney Street (STA. 459+and running northerly to an end point at Asylum Street in HartfordCT (STA. 490+59). Contract 4 also includes the construction of1 station, 2 new busway bridges, 10 retaining walls, and the relocati

    of approximately one mile of railroad (Capitol Avenue to Union Station

    Contract 5 (Project Nos. 063-671 and 063-641) includes replacemeof the existing Broad Street bridge over Amtrak, 3 retaining walls,and the reconstruction of Broad Street between Capitol Avenue andFarmington Avenue in Harford, CT.

    Contract 6 (Project Nos. 063-672) is to classify and arrange for thereuse and/or disposal of contaminated soil generated by the constructicontractors. One site is off New Park Avenue in Hartford underneatI-84, and the other is located off Columbus Boulevard in New Brita
